When I swapped out my Bilsteins, Both RSMs where punched through. These were the Meyle heavy duty ones ( from several years ago when they were still good. Looks like they aren't any better than OEM.

So when I put the Konis back I though hell I'm going to run these fully soft so I'll put my original OEMs back in.... they should be ok for a while.... I got 8 miles and this happened:
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160207/b65acd64b86cb9298506afb268e01958.jpg
The whole rubber grommet punched through
Luckily were at the BMW dealer picking up some oil when it happened... unlucky that they didn't have the part in stock. Went over to Kristen's Acura dealer next door, pulled the shock and limped the car home. I have RE RSMs on order
RE style RSMs are the way to go or any others that are designed similarly. BTW TC Kline are the REs with red anodization and a higher price tag
I'm scared to look at the ones on the wife's zhp. Got a feeling they are like yours
Rouge rsm are the way to go.

The original mount just seems like a poor design, along with "reinforced" versions that are build the same way just with slightly more robust parts. Glad you were able to limp the car home. And interesting info on the TC Kline RSMs.

I think the problem is that there is no metal sandwiched in between the bushings, it's relying solely on rubber to keep it from punching through...

Wow. Rob. I've not seen a fail like that. Glad you and the car are ok. I went Rogue on mine. Probably need to on Colin's too. He's due for suspension refresh.

Coil as in springs? It's just the mount in the trunk where the shock attaches. Here is what mine looked like.

Yes they work with any shock with 10mm or 12mm shaft.
If you have externally adjustable shocks they have a 12mm shaft.
Rear coilovers still use a conventional shock so they'll work with those too.
The part number is the same for both. You just need to remove the inner sleeve for the 12mm shaft

Damn....I replaced my failed BC RSMs with the OEM M3 RSMs in my ZHP and now after reading this thread....I'm thinking about getting two sets of RE RSMs, one for each car....

Group buy??

Wouldnt be a bad idea to look into, I can email them. Are the rogue front/rear strut mounts poly or just heavy duty? Really don't want to sacrifice ride quality anymore than it will with the coils going on the car. I definitely need some sort of new strut mounts to go with my coils.

No poly in them is my understanding, just a better design. I'd be in for 2 sets if we can do a group buy. Thanks for your efforts Jacob!

Ahh, right on. Well I'll shoot them an email as well tomorrow and see what they have to say.

the rogue ones are nice, i have them in my car. obey the torque specs for the shock shaft nut.
my OEM RSMs had around 135K miles when they came out - they were in surprisingly good shape.

That's what I thought too. Mine only had about 50k on them.
Here's what the one that popped out looks like...

Looks pretty good, right? I discovered after I got it off the shock that it's completely split around the center.

When it happened, I knew right away something was wrong. It makes pretty loud sound to let you know it turned to shit....
What was surprising is just how strange and unstable the car was missing one shock.... that whole corner felt loose: lots of oscillation in every direction.

EDIT: Just wanted to be clear, the 10mm and 12mm are 2 different part numbers. Most of us will be using the 10mm
Pair these with bc coil overs sounds good to me

FYI: RE RSM are on backorder from RE... at least 2 weeks. I had to get mine from Bimmerworld, they have plenty in stock.

Same just happened to me this winter, I don't remember the brand but I purchased a set off of turner that had a lifetime warranty to replace the OEM mounts. My OEM mounts busted after hitting a huge unavoidable pothole. Gotta love all the rain down in san diego a few weeks ago

I asked over there at RE, this the response:
Robert, unfortunately these are a lost leader for us. These are the small, inexpensive items to get you in the door and introduced to all of our products. This means that the margins on these are super thin.

I talked to him about why I hadn't heard or seen my order. They sent me an email about the RSM being on backorder but it went to my spam folder. he gladly gave me a refund and told me who might have them in stock. So I thought while I had his ear, I'd ask about the group buy...

Gotcha, well thanks for asking. I'll have to check my spam folder, maybe their response made it in there

Do the Rogue mounts have any real advantages over the aluminum ones that Turner sells?
http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-3666-rear-shock-mounts-rsm-hp-aluminumrubber-e30-e36-e46-z3-z4-pair.aspx
Rouge Mounts are mounted upside down. So you do not have to go back into the trunk again to remove the shocks.

The TMS mounts are polyurethane from their description. You'll get a little more road noise transfer with those. I can't tell how they are designed from that single picture...

This is why the RE RSM work. There is metal sandwiched between two rubber bushings and two washers on each end making it impossible for the shock to punch through.

I got the RE RSMs installed last night. Now I can forget about RSM issues
You can definitely remove them without removing the interior. My recommendation is to put a little dab of silicone sealant or whatever you have laying around on the reinforcement plate to hold it in place and keep it from pushing up into the body when swapping out the shocks.
Here's the OEM mount minus the rubber. You can see why it fails: nothing but rubber to hold it in place
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160219/ceb6de46466baf2c1a0e208977685b02.jpg
The RE mount bolts from the bottom but you can mount it the traditional way if you have a rear strut bar
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160219/45d87adc3d48ea9e5a1e1eecba9d7ff5.jpg
I used antisieze on the bolts because that area is going see water

Also, I want to let everyone know that I made a mistake in an earlier post regarding the shaft size: the part number is the SAME for 10mm & 12mm shafts you just remove the inner sleeve for the 12 mm shaft. I edited the previous post to reflect that.
Sorry for the misinformation!
