View Full Version : Rear Deck Rattle Question

My rear deck has developed an occasional rattle recently that is especially apparent with increased volume. I'm not alone in this issue and there seems to be two solutions:

The tennis ball mod (http://m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=362401) (simple and easy)
A more thorough method detailed by Hermes' DIY here (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?4717-Double-DIY-Rear-Window-Shelf-Refurbish-amp-Rattle-Solution-doityourself).

My question is: for people who have done either one, how has the solution held up for you over time? I am leaning toward doing the more involved method since I will have my interior apart anyways if I can manage to secure this M3 interior I'm pursuing. However, if you have had longevity issues with either one, I'd like to know.

Appreciate any help!

I did the tennis ball method in both my ZHP and M3 and it worked great. In my ZHP the rattle was so bad it made the subwoofer sound blown. When I did the M3 I added some acoustic foam, worked great!

I did the tennis ball method as well, im sure it works, but it didn't solve my problem. I actually don't think the deck was rattling in the first place. I have more of a "squeak" instead of a rattle.

Thanks for the responses!

I'm still on the fence. It'll come down to how motivated I am if I have my interior apart.

I used the fuzzy side of Velcro on my '01 330Ci. The car was relatively new and still under factory warranty at the time, but I did not want the dealership disassembling the interior to resolved the matter, especially knowing that they could never fix anything on the first attempt. Anyways... at the time the velcro solution was fairly common amongst Ci owners. Place multiple strips in between the rear glass and the package shelf.

So the Velcro you placed is visible on the rear deck? Interesting, I'd prefer not to have it visible. I am pretty set on going the route of Hermes' DIY mentioned above.

I have been suffering with this issue for the entire (almost) 4 years of ownership.. I will do the tennis ball thing this week. Thanks for posting this!

My pleasure. Let me know how it goes. It's very involved to go Hermes' route so I'm still considering the tennis ball option for its relative ease.

It is not visable at all as the velcro is tucked down and in between the glass and package shelf. It is the plastic piece near the glass that rattles from the HK sub or at least it was with my former Ci.

I stuffed a couple of foam cones up there instead of the tennis balls and it's going on 4+ years of no rattle.

Hmmm...I'll have to look into those, that's a good thought!

Whereabouts in Portland are you?

I'm out in the Newberg area. So not technically Portland... but close enough! You in the suburbs?

Ah, yeah that's a little ways out of Portland, but still not far. I'm just up in Portland Heights.

Ah very nice. I've got a few buddies up in that area.

I go to a number of the CCA events, so if you're ever at any of them look for the other ZHP :biggrin

Went ahead with your suggestion, Milano.

I installed the styrofoam cones and discussed it in my project thread here (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?15714-William-s-330Ci-ZHP-Maintenance-and-Project-Thread&p=482184#post482184). Time will tell if the solution works.

Looks exactly like my setup, so you should be good! :thumbup
