Oil filter housing gasket is leaking and while I have the housing out, might as well replace the CCV/hoses. Wish me luck. :)

Pics tonight, assuming I can still feel my fingers.

Good luck - I plan to tackle this over the next few months so pics would be helpful

I've done this job before, on my wife's E53/X5. Doing these together isn't a bad idea, as you have good access to the underside of the intake manifold. I've seen some guys pull the intake altogether, but that's more involved. With the alternator and the OFH out of the way, you can reach anything under the manifold.

Some tips... I remove the OFH completely from the car. Unbolt the 6 bolts holding it to the block, and then unbolt the power steering pump from the OFH. YOu need to remove the PS pulley to get access to the long front bolt, no biggie. There's a short one in the back, facing sideways. Make sure the gasket channel is *spotless* and don't use any kind of sealant. I also replace the VANOS hose and the crush washers - pay attention the the hose orientation when installing the new one. To do this right, you really need to remove the dipstick tube and thoroughly clean it out; carb cleaner and some stiff wire.

I used the cold weather version of the CCV/hoses. This is almost impossible to fit without removing a whole bunch of stuff. It's a tight fit against the throttle body and the rubber jacket wants to grab everything under there. The trick to fitting the tricky hose without hassle: mount the new CCV to the manifold with the top screw started a few threads, just enough to hold it on. The angled/bent hose, the one between the intake runners, goes on first. Insert the CCV end of this hose into the cavity/hole of the intake and make sure the bent end is facing the ground - this hose does not click on like the others, it twists on at the CCV end. Working by feel, push the end onto the CCV and when you feel it mate, GENTLY rotate the other end up and in between #1 and #2 intake runners. GENTLY pull on the CCV end of this hose to ensure it locked on when you twisted it up. Might take a couple tries. The other hoses are a piece of cake and just snap together. I always use a small dap of SylGlide silicone grease on the o-rings - it's made for rubber and won't harm the o-rings.

CCV and all hoses are installed, dipstick cleaned and the outer drain channel is clear. New o-rings on the air manifold. ICV and throttle body cleaned, new gasket on TB. OFH cleaned. Ran out of daylight, so will reassemble more in a day or so. Forgot to order a new intake boot, so that's going to delay by a day or so. All going together nicely.

I'll probably do plugs, vanos seals and a VCG while the belts are off, maybe next weekend.

Thanks; really enjoying the mild winter. Actually doing most of this work in the driveway.

I hear that, I've been working on my dad's ford ranger in the driveway.
