Got back in my car after getting some groceries, and was welcomed with this... Car won't start, but has power, everything works...except the car itself

http://vid374.photobucket.com/albums/oo184/jcadell/IMG_4477_zpskx3nry7b.mp4

No sound of the car turning over at all (as you can hear), and all the icons on the dash are blinking, along with my angel eyes

So far I have removed every fuse in the glove box, all fine. Cleaned both battery terminals, very little corrosion but cleaned them up anyhow. Tried to jump start it, no dice. I'm out of ideas, but I'm thinking maybe some sort of security system malfunction? Or bad control module somewhere? Anyone have any ideas?? My car is sitting in the pouring rain in a grocery store parking lot, not ideal...

Knock the starter while turning the key, just a guess.

Sounds like a dead starter. Try to smack it

Or a dead battery based on the video.

I thought about taking a crack at the starter, but I'm pretty sure it's not in a spot I can get to.

If the battery was dead, I should be able to jump it, which I couldn't. Symptoms didn't change when trying to jump

Yeah starter is not in the easiest location.

Push start not an option?

Push start isn't an option currently, I'm alone and can't push it around the grocery store lot safely. I came across this thread, some very interesting points in here, I never thought of the Chip in the key or EWS module

Where are you right now? I could come help you push start it if need be.

I'm out in Tanasbourne, but I've given up for the evening, I'll get back at it in the morning. Really appreciate the offer though,
I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow.

If your battery has a dead short then NO. Believe me as I just went thru this with my wife's 4Runner. It had all the symptoms of a bad starter.

Do you have a volt meter? Check the battery voltage. A dead short in a battery will still give you a good reading using a meter thou.

I would recommend taking the battery out and have it load tested at Autozone.

+1
I was going to ask how old the battery is....leaning on battery issue.

Was it a dead short in the battery or a bad battery?

For reference, I had a no-start condition last year. I replaced the salmon relay, the fuel pump relay, and the ignition switch - all worked afterwards. Something to think about if it doesn't start again even though everything else works.

Wolf I'm pretty sure it was a dead cell in the battery, it only had 10 volts when I finally tested it. Luckily I had my mechanic buddy with me, or I may not have bought the battery at all! I bought this car in Feb 2014, so I haven't even owned it for 2 years. When I bought it from the dealership (Kuni BMW, worst dealership in the entire world) the lights were flickering and it had some other electrical issues, so they put a "new" battery in and it fixed all of the issues...or so I thought. When we pulled the battery out yesterday we looked and saw that it was from '05! So basically, they went and pulled an old/used/crappy battery out of a used car on their lot and stuck it in there. I'm surprised it even lasted this long! What a bunch of cheapskates, so frustrating.

Crazy thing is, my car is like new now! It drives better, all of the little electrical nuances seem to be sorted out, windows and sunroof have been supercharged, lights are brighter, etc. I had no idea that a new battery could actually improve the overall car this much. $150 was worth it in the end, I'm happy

Cool thanks for the heads up

Wow that's pretty crappy of them to do that. I heard a new battery adds 10 HP [emoji106][emoji2]

10?? Shiiiit, I'm getting at least 12-15! But I did also put some stickers on though so, that's probably where the extra hp came from
