Hi guys
I am doing a MT fluid flush of my 330 Ci
and as you can guess I am new at this .
I ordered the new filter and seal for the pan
but I can't seem to find it LoL
I have watched many videos on the fluid change but I can't see the pan.
I see the full whole and drain whole but is the pan not flat?
thanks for your patience guys

I could be wrong, but I think transmission fluid filters are for automatic transmission E46s only. For manual cars you just drain the old oil (remove the fill plug FIRST before the drain plug), and refill with new oil (I used Redline MTL). If there is leaking somewhere, then you'll have to get into seals and such.
Yes the manual transmissions do not have a filter as far as I know...

Yup :thumbsup
And as I said before, remove the fill bolt located higher on the transmission before removing the lower drain bolt. If you remove the drain bolt first and drain all the oil and then can't remove the fill bolt, your car will be stranded until you can get that fill bolt off to refill the transmission. Good luck!

Glad you got it sorted out. All good advice above.

1. Remove fill bolt
2. Remove drain bolt and let all fluid drain
3. Install drain bolt
4. Use fluid pump in fill port, two quarts of Redline D4 ATF
5. Install fill bolt.
6. Spray it all down with brake clean and wipe down.

What fluid did you end up using?

D4 ATF works better in the ZF 6 speed than the MTL.

The only thing I've read in the old school guide and elsewhere is that you mix the two together if you live in colder climates, but that otherwise, MTL is the better option.

I'm piggybacking off the experience of those who've raced these transmissions (both zf and getrag) for the better part of 12 years. Better wear results after being torn down....
To each their own I guess!

Gotcha, sounds like one of those things that isn't really a big deal for 90% of us on here and we don't need to go back and forth on.
We put either of those fluids in our transmissions and the enthusiast driver is already ahead of most and it'll last longer.

This car has used MTL for 80% of its 235k-mile life and can safely say that the tranny still shifts like butter. Never once had the infamous German-car 2nd gear hard engagement. :thumbsup

My car suffers from this and is worse on colder days... Drives me nuts sometimes

I think it's safe to say that anything RedLine is going to be good in our trannys.

I have this "issue" as well but it only lasts for a few minutes until the car is warm. I think it's only noticeable because the UUC SSK I have is very very notchy.

Something about that sentence...

I have an Autosolutions SSK and sometimes my 1st gear is hard to engage (I usually do a 2-1 shift and it goes in). I wonder if it could be my engine/tranny mounts changing the dynamics/angle? I plan to replace them soon.

My UUC does the same thing in 1st.... randomly. I think it's just the nature of the trans/SSK combo. I have UUC black trans mounts

Thanks Rob. Good to know (but I'd hoped the new mounts would cure it!).

FWIW, mine is a little sticky/tricky sometimes, too... My car only has 43k miles on it, and as far as I'm aware is all stock. FYI.

D4 ATF? or MTL

I used Red Line MTL for my manual transmission fluid flush. Feels great, many people will recommend the same. I assume Red Line D4 ATF would be good for automatic transmissions, but don't quote me on that since I don't have an automatic.

I used D4 ATF in my manual this go around I believe.

Curious as well, I know the Old School guide used to recommend a mix of D4 ATF and MTL if you were in colder areas, but his most recent version switched to D4 ATF in autos and only recommending MTL in manuals regardless of climate.

No difference. I like them both just fine.
