That sounds to me like it's just the regular sport package suspension and is not the same as our ZHP suspension, which doesn't make sense. I think my options list has that on it also, have to check when I get home.

You have to keep in mind that ZHP was BMW Individual car, which might have these sort of inconsistencies. So within the scope of this, this particular option meant something else.

I just got my specs sheet for my car through kundenbetreuung@bmw.de and most things make sense.
I do have a question or 2 for the gurus out there.
Power: 141. Are you kidding?
Transmission: HECK. What is that?
Options
823 HOT CLIMATE VERSION. I found several answers after a bit of googling, from different knock sensing (due to use of lower octane in hot countries), to a larger radiator, and a different blower and compressor in the HVAC. Do you guys have this too? Car was sent to Florida originally.

Oli, heck is likely rear-wheel drive. Heck means rear in German.
Code 823 is:
S823A TROPICAL VERSION
S823A HOT COUNTRY MODEL
Not sure what that means. I could see an upgraded radiator or cooling parts.

Yep, I wonder if all US cars, because they have AC as default, also have this hot climate option. Unless, it is only the ones that were in the southern parts of the US. I also read that this option may have slightly lowered HP!

Hot country refers to a coding option for the IHKA (HVAC computer) that sends more air to the center vents to provide the most a/c cooling. The coding option for hot country is to set it to "normal" so I would assume it's pretty common. See this PDF about halfway down (page 4) under "Heating/Air Conditioning/Ventilation"

Awesome find MrMaico: IHKA programming enhanced to produce more cooling output when selected to “hot country”. (Footwell and defrost vents closed to allow more center vent air for maximum cold air.)
That's my hot climate option! Cool beans (literally).

07-04-2011, 07:07 AM
I don't like that fact that when I use "Auto" for the HVAC it sends all the air to the center vents. I wonder if changing the "hot country" coding to the opposite of "normal" (abnormal?) :biggrin would change it so Auto would also blow air out of the floor vents?

Ya, I noticed that right after I got my car and figured it had something to do with the fact that it came from Vegas so I did some investigating. It sounds like most USA cars probably are set to hot country.

Thanks for the info BP. I really should try getting my laptop set up for coding. I got as far as buying and modding a cable. I just have a feeling I'll run into issues setting it up and not being tech-savvy enough to figure out what I'm doing wrong. With help from my brother I could probably get it done though...someday. :-)
Maybe one of you guys that have it figured out would be interested in making some cash by letting me send you my laptop and programming it for me? You think that would work....IOW, do you think I'd be able to figure out how to run it after it is set up? I watched a Youtube video explaining it once and it didn't look REAL difficult.

I could do it for you, BUT, I cannot guarantee I can send back in a reasonable amount of time (a few days). If I do it, it'll probably take me a week or so because I'm just so short on time during the weekdays.................
I may have an easy solution, which is to transfer the VM I created and test it. If that works, then you could potentially have it back within a couple of days taking shipping time into consideration. If you want to try it, let me know via PM and I'll send you my mailing address.

Possible - the original window sticker also lists the aluminum black cube trim. It's strange that they would do that but nothing else to the car. Perhaps they just preferred the wood.

S823A HOT COUNTRY MODEL
Not sure what that means. I could see an upgraded radiator or cooling parts.
And the boss wins!
After I received the pdf through kundenbetreuung@bmw.de, I stayed in contact with them to get more answers about the "hot country model #823.
The first reply stated that: "The option 823 means that the car was build with an improved cooling system."
To which I inquired whether this was improved cooling of the cabin or the engine.
And this morning I received the following:"Your car has an improved engine cooling system."
This is good news as I feel that better cooling of the engine is more important than the better cooling of the cabin.
Anyway interesting info to share with the peeps.

Going out on a limb to predict Hot Climate Version involves all of the above: engine & cabin cooling, plus emissions in the form of the CCV (crank case valve) and related plumbing.
There is a cold weather version of the CCV, involves insulated hoses. It's the preferred way to go when replacing the CCV parts (http://blog.bavauto.com/bmw-e46/diy-video-replacing-the-bmw-m54-crankcase-ventilation-system) and is sold as a kit.

I hope they are correct, that would be nice. But I have my doubts.....I'd ask them for specifics. What do we do when we need replacement parts for our improved cooling system? Never seen any different parts listed anywhere other than the standard cooling system parts. First thing that would come to mind would be a cooler thermostat but I've never seen an OEM one and besides these engines need to run at a rather warm temp for emission reasons. Mine averages 205 F.

To which I replied: "If BMW.USA does not know the answer to my simple question about an option (# 823) built into my car, I fail to see how a local BMW would"

Well, the men have been decommissioned.
BMW USA just sent me a blanket statement of the sort: "thank you for your interest, for detailed technical aspects of engine cooling, please contact your local BMW dealer."
To which I replied: "If BMW.USA does not know the answer to my simple question about an option (# 823) built into my car, I fail to see how a local BMW would"
We'll see. At least when I was talking to the Germans, there was a human on the other side...
Nice work Oli! I was hoping you'd get something out of the Germans. It seems like that is the standard answer from BMWNA for any technical questions.

So the story on hot climate option # 823 seems to check out.
Germany told me "Hyu haf improooovd engine coooling".
BMWNA said nothing and told me to talk to my local dealer.
I called the BMW dealer in Lexington, told him the story and asked the question:"watup wit the old code #823 bud?" (Remember, I am French and I have noooooo accent whatsoever when I speak).
Here is Jeff's answer at BMW in Lexington, KY: "Sometimes when cars are sold in states where it gets very hot, (remember your car was originally sold in Florida - yessir), they install a larger radiator, or a larger oil cooler, or a larger fan. I don't like the or statements because it indicates that Jeff walked to the foreman of the shop, asked him about the hot climate option, and the dude couldn't remember exactly the details.
The stories between BMW.de and BMWNA agree somewhat in that it is engine cooling we are talking about.
Still I wonder as some of you have posted above, how this could be given that there is only one radiator listed at realoem for example.
I asked Jeff, and he said that if I order the part at a BMW dealer (say I need a new radiator), they will get the correct one matched to my car because they have the VIN number and they know about the option codes.
Truth?

+1
We can punch in our VIN to Realoem and find parts specific to our cars too and it will bring up the same cooling system parts for all E46's. There are some things that the dealer can find by VIN that we can't but I don't think this is one of them. If there were any heavy duty cooling system parts available people would have figured that out by now.
Thanks for checking into it though.

Not that this scientifically proves anything, but I have heard the same thing, that the hot weather areas got beefed up cooling systems. I recall reading it on another forum, but I'm not sure of the details.
Marcus-SanDiego

And logically, if that's the case, then those beefed up cooling systems should still be available. After all, plenty of people live in hot climates in the US. Anyone know how to get a beefed up radiator, for example?
I'm with Barry. You'd think that people would upgrade to these these larger/better radiators, etc., right?
John, I am sure you've heard about this. I'm surprised I haven't, actually. But the fact remains, is this more like Bigfoot? We've all heard of it; no one has actually captured one.

Yes, my next project is to find the elusive upgraded radiator. I'm all for "catch and release", (like bigfoot) but if I find this one, i'm keeping it.

Now wait one cotton pickin' minute.
If I go to realoem and manually enter any 325i 2005... I get the choice of 3 radiators. #17119071518, 9, or 7 (last digit).
If I put in my VIN, I only get 2 serial numbers for radiators 8, or 9.
The thing I also just noticed is the supplement column with a number. That number is yes, you guessed it 859.
As such, when I enter the VIN number of my car, all radiators (only 2 manual or automatic) have the 859 supplement checked with a YES next to it.
Going to real oem with any 2005 325i gets me 859 YES or 859 NO choices.
Different part numbers too.

I just shot your radiator, qwwietly
Actually 857 number may not have anything to do with code 823 ?

Strangely, all three #s 17119071518,7, or 9 show up at ECStunning. One is for manual, one for automatic and one for 330i (the bigger one?).

Who knows, you might be on to something there. But like I said, you would think people would have figured this out by now.:dunno
I notice the 517 is for from 05/2005 and newer and the 518 is up to 05/2005. No idea what change might have been made at that time though. It would be nice to know what those supplement numbers mean.

Yes, just googling these 3 numbers gives you radiators, each has a different size.
Does anyone know what the supplement number is on realoem?

Update, still haven't found big foot.
Evan emailed back after I shoot my vin over to him.
I quote him here: "when looking at the parts in the ETK for your vehicle, I don’t see any different ones listed per this option code aside from the normal e46 325i components".
Not special indeed.

I'm just curious as to what The code 863 Europe/dealer directory means? My car came with the warning triangle in the trunk, the complete first aid kit under the passenger seat, and the sticker on the trunk tool box is all in German with a German roadside assistance number. My wife has the same ZHP, but its a Titanium silver automatic. I looked at the sticker on her trunk tool box and its all in English with a 1-800 number for roadside assistance. It has been some what of a mystery to me. Any ideas? I can take some pictures of the two different stickers. I know they're just stickers but it seemed odd.

Your car came with the warning triangle and the first aid kit because your car was most likely acquired through European Delivery. Either that, or the previous owner(s) retrofitted those items, but that's unlikely. I believe in Germany, those items are required to be in all cars that are going to be driving on German roads.
