View Full Version : E46 Grey interior is NOT called Dove Grey

This is an important distinction as they are different interiors, and Dove is not available on E46. Just wanted to make sure people know because I keep seeing this tossed around.
That is all. :)

Haha I'm definitely guilty of this. I even know it's not and I still call it that out of habit because someone else here called it that when I first joined.
Its true color code is N6TT and I believe it's called just "grey," for people who care.

Yeah it just seems like everyone's calling it that when it just isn't, so I figure it would be a good idea throw this out there to make sure folks know. It's kind of like the distinction between OE and OEM, quite a difference.
Dove is a lighter shade, almost white (and IMO looks better), available on the E36 platform.

I have been restoring my 1999 323i and it has grey leather as well.
I tried to color match with SEM Classic Coat 17353 "BMW Silver Gray" and that coating is definitely lighter.
SO, going to try SEM Color Coat Medium Gray 15393.
Do E90s have the same Gray as E46s?

The leather in your 323i is Dove Grey. What you have may or may not be correct, but it should come out lighter since worn-out Dove Grey does get darker as it ages. Did you try to do a full cleaning using Leatherique products? That should bring out its true color so you can have a better comparison to the product you're using. Is it some kind of dye or is it paint?

I believe so. It wasn't called anything different for the E90's, just grey. There is a whitish color called Oyster, but is much much lighter than the grey and is two-toned throughout the interior instead of all grey like the standard grey interior.
The M3's also had Palladium Silver, which is a variation of grey, but that was also two-toned.

Yup. Already did full application of Leatherique & Pristine Clean.
The leather is miraculously in great shape with the exception of some drivers seat wear.
According to the VIN Decoder I do have N6TT in the 323i. The original window sticker just says "Grey" as well.
Standardleder/grau (N6TT)
The SEM Color Coat (and Classic Coat) is not a dye, but a fade resistant flexible and permanent coating.
It is a pro-level type product and I haven't seen it in any retail automotive store. Had to get it from a specialty automotive upholstery shop.
A friend has used the SEM Medium Grey on his E90 with grey interior with a perfect match.
I'm going to get a can of the Medium Grey and see how it turns out. If it is an exact match for the E46, I'll put up a diy!
Think of it as an uber-mega-strength (smooth) pro-PlastiDip, if you will. VERY abrasion resistant.

Just to clarify, you have an E36 323 or an E46?
The E46 is definitely standard grey. Medium grey would sound about right considering the shade that the E46 has. The E36 is definitely Dove, which is lighter, and would match the first can you got.

I'm intrigued about this product. Is there any place to buy it online?

Yup. Its an E46.
October 1998 production; 196k miles young at this point!
Looks like the Medium Gray can be purchased on Amazon. My guy locally sells it for about $17 with tax.

For black, it is magic. If it is as good on grey, its definitely a winner.

Darn. Too bad they don't specifically match BMW colors. I assume you had to go with "close enough", right?
My headrests for some reason look like they've gone through a failed dye attempt before I got my interior, and my rear seats the same. They need to be redyed, but I have Natural Brown, so it's not easy to find something that's easy and cheap. :(

You know, SEM makes a TON of colors.
They do send sample colors to you if you request them on their website.
If there is anything close to a match for NB, we could be onto something here!
