View Full Version : Style 135 modifications/color change

I have mentioned before that I want to fix my rash and refinish my wheels, but am uncertain of what I want in color. I don't really like the factory finish against SG. First I thought gunmetal, then hyper silver, then hyper black! One thing is for sure, I do not know what I want. I have decided to dip them charcoal to see what I think.

I digress, I thought it would be cool to see some pics of other colors that people have painted their 135 wheels. Maybe even an official style 135 thread where we can have a consolidated place to post pictures/discussion for reference.

Pictures appreciated

I'd avoid black. Most black wheels look tacky/ricey IMO. A lighter shade than your car would give the overall look some contrast and add a bit of colour, so I'd do a variation of silver. Then again, I think 135s look great out of the factory.

Gunmetal for sure. My last car, I dipped the wheels Anthracite and it was a nice color also

I'm gonna dip them "charcoal" but the thinking when I paint them I might do something super bright like hyper silver, but in a single color. So it wouldn't actually be hyper silver.

I can't make up my mind!

Also just noticed that the arc 8 is the only apex wheel offered in hyper black. Unlike most I don't like the arc 8 and love the ex7 and ps7

Anyone got pictures? Especially a SG with any color other than stock.

If I ever did anything with my wheels I'd have them done in this finish. It's not chrome but somewhere in between.

That hyper-silver semi-polished bright color would look awesome on a dark car.

I agree black is tough to pull off. It looks pretty awesome on some really high-end cars, and preferably on a really simple whee. But, I agree... On some cars - even ours, it can still be kind of cool, but also at the risk of adding a side of rice. On a wheel like the 135, I think the unfortunate thing is that the black would hide most of the wheel's design in anything but the brightest sunlight.

My car is TiAg, so the wheels are a similar color. I'm wondering if a little contrast might look cool. I'm typically pretty conservative with mods. I like a mostly-OE look, or if modded, very tastefully, very subtly done. I love the 135's... It's one of the things that really attracted me to the ZHP. I just think it's a beautiful wheel. Somehow sporty, and high-performance looking, but also really sophisticated. It's just a damn pretty wheel. I think a little darker color might make for a little contrast with the and add just a touch of modern in the process.

I searched "bmw style 135 gunmetal" and found a thumbnail from Vortex Tuning. I've been sitting on it a few days, but the more I look at it, the more I love it. I think it might look really awesome with Titan Silber. I did a half-assed mockup in Photoshop. Lighting isn't ideal, but what do you guys think?

Another benefit is that it wouldn't look filthy two miles down the road from the carwash.

Anyway have any idea what that color is? Is there an actual BMW color that's close to that? Space Gray Metallic in the ballpark?

Cheers,
SC

Looking at a bunch of pictures of 328s and M4s in varying lighting conditions side-by-side with that wheel photo from Vortex, it looks like the new Mineral Gray Metallic color is probably really close. It's just light enough to have some contrast with the tire, but dark enough to contrast nicely with the Titanium. Really liking that look.

That color does look really good. I have a picture on my phone I saved the day I bought my car and looks to be the same color.
I am so on the fence with mine. Might do the "hyper silver" duplicolor spray. With silvergray I feel like I could go both ways.

Oh thanks for posting that. That does look pretty dark with a darker car.

Silbergrau seems like it's kind of right in the middle so you can go dark or light and still have good contrast.

Ran into this Z4 today in my travels... How fortunate!

Looked up the VIN and found out it was Sterlinggrau Metallic. Beautiful color, and there's some contrast even with black. That might be the color I want!

I'm really conflicted.

Maybe this will help you make a decision. Took your car shot and simulated a brighter version of the OEM color (so like hyper silver), the gunmetal wheel, and put them next to the original. Stare and compare.

I don't like the black look. I'm with the many who thinks it hides the beauty of the wheel and the lines. If I were gonna go black I would paint the wall and lip silver (maybe even body color) and only spokes black. That way you would see contrast within the wheels.

Oh, I totally agree and said as much earlier. To clarify, I posted the pic of the Z4 because I liked its body color - Sterlinggrau Metallic - AS MY WHEEL COLOR. It contrasts nicely with black, which means the wheel and tire won't turn into a black hole. It might be a little warm though to go with the Titanium. I like the value/shade, though.

I definitely am leaning towards that darker now. I will have to figure out what paint to go with. I will probably just can spray it. I have been thinking the graphite duplicolor wheel paint with possibly a black primer. I might have to look around more. I don't think it has to be wheel paint and don't really know what the difference is. As long as the wheel is prepped right most paints should stick the same.

Ok, I was confused and must not have read well. I do think that color would look cook on TiAg. It's hard to pull off anything light on TiAg IMO. Dark looks good.

I did this to my 135s back when I had them:

20520

They were dirty at the time of this photo. This is 4 coats of black plasti dip, with 2-3 coats of silver metallizer on top.

Thanks, Dimitri! Those look great - especially on Mystic (one of my favorite colors, btw). The metallic overlay really helps bring the design of the wheel back out.

OK, so I got quotes back on refurbing my wheels. Two different quotes, two different companies. $80-95.00 per wheel to fix all the rash and do new powder coat with clear coat finish, plus $100 to fix one wheel that the stealer told me is bent (I haven't had the wheel off to confirm). The other said around $100/wheel for all four, including fixing the bent one.

So, looks like I'm looking at the $350-500 ballpark to rehab the 135's. I'll probably do it because they look really bad, it bugs the crap out of me to have them all rashed, there's no aftermarket wheel that will be significantly cheaper that I'll like an more, and I just love those wheels. It's one of the few OEM wheels from any manufacturer that I really love.

Just have to settle on the color. BP posted in my project thread (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?16253-Ecrabb-s-ZHP-Vert-Project-Log&p=442308#post442308) that "Ferric Grey" is the color BMW is using on some of its new wheels. I googled it, and it sounds like some people really don't like it, but I think it might look really nice on the 135's. Decisions...

That sounds cheap to me. I was quoted $125 per wheel to sand down light rash and repaint. No filler and an added charge for color change. I decided I would rather DIY and buy a set of apex wheels in the future.

Edit: to clarify, I have rash that needs to be filled and would take of my lip if it were "sanded" (more like grinded)

Yeah I think with a factory style wheel like that you have to stay away from stuff in the middle and either go with a light or a dark like above. I feel like anything lighter than what 05Imola just put on his, or any matte or flat colors just make it look like you haven't washed your wheels in a while lol. I think that those he just posted may be my favorite dark color I've seen on a set of BMW wheels. The metallic/pearl in that paint makes them pop and look clean.

So I think after contemplating for awhile I am going to go for a BMW oe color. Thinking about getting them done in sparkling graphite or possibly the e39 anthracite. Leaning more towards SG. I want to buy another set of 135s first so I can run 8.5 square. I'll try to sell the 8" square setup after. Maybe someone on e46f will bite

Arrgghhhh!!! I can't decide! I pretty much had a color all picked out... A local powder-coating shop that carries Prismatic Powders has a color called Kingsport Grey. Well, here...

http://www.prismaticpowders.com/colors/PMB-5027/KINGSPORT-GREY/

It's pretty dark, but it has a lot of metallic in it, and it really pops in the light. Here's a Subaru wheel they did in the same color...

I want something darker that will look more modern and contrast nicely with my Titanium Silver, but not too dark... I love the Style 135 and want to see the wheel and have contrast with the black tire.

I'd pretty much decided on the Kingsport Grey, but now seeing your wheel is making me rethink. I love Chrome Shadow Style 65's on the E39 M5, so your wheels really got me thinking again. Damn you. ;)

Which is all totally wrong. First off the part mentioned is too large for this application.
Secondly, if you remove the existing badges you can likely clean up and re-attach them using 3M attachment tape or equivalent. I have a low-mileage car and found the badges to be in great shape, so I'm just going that route.

Don't know how the color match is, but as delivered, the "Mineral Grey Metallic" 18" wheels look much more indigo than the "Titanium Gunmetal" 16" currently mounted on the car. I selected the Mineral Gray based on web photos of this BMW color. Does anyone know if my new paint is accurate?

Not that I'm disappointed, just a bit surprised. It will be interesting to see how they look mounted on the car in a few weeks. PS: love the matte varnish they applied.

I think I'm going to like it too, but I don't think it's anywhere BMW's color. I went to the dealership and they painted out a swatch of touchup paint for me: quite different.

Another issue that's raising its ugly head is the finish. I had specified a satin or near-matte finish and they delivered, but it was raining when the wheels were dropped back off. Everywhere raindrops fell, the clearcoat went grayish, and stayed that way for quite some time. It's two hours later and the wheels left with drops on them– the drops dried greyish.

So: respray.
Here's a wheel outdoors up against the car- I had something a bit lighter in mind to minimize road/brake dust appearance.
But I think it's a gorgeous color.

The Alloy Wheel Repair guy said that he'd put the dark finish over all of the barrel of the wheel, but he masked the inside off.
I can see good reasons for doing so, especially as involves removing/replacing wheel weights, but...
Think that's going to look odd? I am new to the world of custom wheel colors.

Personally, I would have pulled the tires and weights off and have the shop strip and refinish the entire wheel. But that's just me; if you're OK with it then that's what matters. Your wheels, your car. :)

Also, it's even more awesome with the sun hitting the paint and setting off the color. Can't wait for pics of them on the car! I keep trying to envision how that color would contrast with silver gray metallic, lol.

Can't wait to see how they look! I'm getting mine powder-coated in the next week or so. I wanted to do the mineral grey, but no perfect match since powder-coating, but it's a color from Prismatic Powders called Kingsport Grey (http://www.prismaticpowders.com/colors/PMB-5027/KINGSPORT-GREY/). In for pics when you get the wheels back!!!

Yeah, those little badges are a little pricey. Still bought four of them from ECS (along with four center covers) for my impending refurb because I wanted the wheels to look spanky new when I was done.

Cheers,
SC

A work trip lined up perfectly wrong with my wheels getting finished, so it took an extra week to get them back. I haven't put them on the car yet and I'm busy every single evening, so it may be this weekend before I get to it, but here's a preview...

Trying to decide whether to use the new center caps I bought or use the originals with a little modification...

Here's the new cap...

The original...

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160413/780c5cbbfd78dd1195378e7474527497.jpg

The original looks really tired, now. What I was thinking of doing was painting the small gray lip gloss black to match both the roundel and the BMW Performance kidneys and shadow line trim.

If I don't use the old caps, I could sell them and make some money back, or I could sell the new caps.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I say try to mod the old ones. You might really like the way it turns out.

You could always tape them off and put a few layers of black plastidip on them, then armorall it to get that shiny gloss look. If you like it then peel and paint. If you don't like it peel and sell.

Interesting idea! No masking involved because they're three pieces... A "backer", the aluminum roundel, and that little rim piece that snaps on over the top. I like the plastidip idea!

That was one of the main factors in going darker for me. In the dozen or so cars I've owned, I've never had an issue with brake dust... Until BMW. I just can't believe how quickly they look like ass. With the darker wheels, it should just get dull and at least not look filth the first 15 miles I put on it after a wash.

One more day until I get the wheels back on the car and the interior put back together. It feels like trying to sleep on Christmas eve!

Get different brake pads too. My Hawk HPS 5.0s have little dust. But brake dust was another consideration when I got my Hyper Black APEX wheels.

...With the darker wheels, it should just get dull and at least not look filth the first 15 miles I put on it after a wash...I chose a matte varnish for the Mineral Gray, not anticipating the dust so much as just thinking it would look better. I lucked out.

ON EDIT: Well, no I didn't. At least to the extent that my wheel guy had little experience with a finish like that. He finished the wheels and delivered them in a light drizzle before the clearcoat had a chance to fully cure. Raindrops went milky on the finish and stayed that way. Everything had to be done all over again.

Well, here they are. After looking at on the car, it turns out they're just a little darker than I wanted. I love it in plenty of light, like direct sunlight. But, the darker it gets, the closer they get to just looking like black and blending with the tire. That's what I was trying to avoid.

I don't hate them... I actually love the color, and it looks good with TiAg. I just think the darker shade hides some of the beauty of the design in the 135 that I really like.

If I could do it over, I'd probably try to go a shade or two lighter, low maybe mixing the coloring picked with silver to lighten it up.

Hopefully it'll grow on me more.

Cheers,
SC

I see what you mean about it being dark and hiding the structure of the 135 a bit. Still looks good IMO. Will definitely hide brake dust (I suggest switching to a low-dust pad from the BMW ones when you have to change your brakes.)

I spent some time at a local powder-coating business trying to find the color I want to have my square set of style 135s re-finished to. Although it isn't a huge change from what they are now, it is a tad 'sparklier' and ever so slightly darker than the bright silver they are now.

As much as I would like them darker, I don't want them too dark...this seems to be the perfect balance. At $80/wheel (blast, powder-coat, clear coat) it won't be dirt cheap but it won't be a terrible amount either.

OK guys I just dropped the wheels off, and picked a color called P5 Glimmer made by Tiger powder.

Here's the chart (http://tigerpowderinfo.com/dev/images/downloads/colorcharts/TIGER_Drylac_Stellix_Color_Card_Volume_2_2013_tas. pdf)

They had the Kingsport Grey as well, but I didn't like how dark it got in the shadows/evening. (looks awesome in direct sun) The P5 Glimmer seemed to hold its shade of color a little better and wasn't as dark overall. I was really torn between the gunmetal, P14, and the P5.

I'm hoping the P5 glimmer is the right choice. LOL

What do you guys think?

Oh my car is identical to ecrabb in this thread I think post 82 shows his car with Kingsport grey.

The shop ordered the P5 glimmer and when they got it they sprayed a sample for me and it wasn't anything like I was thinking it would be from the swatch. They also sprayed me another sample in Anthracite, and it was awesome in the sun, but a little dark in the shade, but I really liked it in the sun. So Anthracite it is! Michelin's go on tomorrow and I'll update pics this weekend when I get everything done.

Got the Michelin's mounted and everything bolted up. The 12mm spacers fit really nice except on the right rear, I had to tap it on a bit. (not the spacer fault, I think there was a metal burr on the hub) I only drove it a little but the rears do rub over big dips in the roads. (both my rear shocks are blown, so maybe once I get the coilovers back from YCW it will be better) If not I guess I'll have to go with 10mm in the rear?? All honesty I could have lived with 10mm all around.

They get a little dark in the shadows, but I think that will grow on me. They are a little "grey" in full sun, but I am liking them overall. I think the guys did a great job on the powdercoating. Any one know what the red dot on the left front tire means? It's the only tire that had a dot like that.

Like I mentioned in your other post, I had rubbing when running the 13mm offset difference.....and the shocks were not blown. It was only on big bumps. Eventually the tires started showing where they were rubbing on the fenders and you could feel the rubber on the inside of the fenders too!

So I haven't got an alignment done yet, but am loving the new tires. The rear rubbing is worrying me though. The YCW coilovers have been redone and are on their way back to the USA. So in a couple weeks i can get those back on and get the full alignment. I'm not planning on going super low on the ride hieght, i want a nice ride quality.

Do you guys think the 12mm spacers in the rear will work out once i get the alignment and the coilover installed? (my rear shocks are completely shot right now)

I'm wondering how some people install 12mm and have no problems, and I am rubbing. Could it be the brand new Michelin's as they have so much tread being new?

oclvframe
05-25-2017, 04:43 AM
So did you go to 10mm in the rear and it was fine then?

No....So, I was getting the rubbing when running the 08 E90 Sport wheels (Style 197) and staggered so I had the usual 255/35/18 on the rear. Prior to having the style 135's refinished, I sourced a second set of 8.5s so I could run square. Now I am running 255/35 on all 4 corners using 8.5" wide 135s. They sit perfect on the car.....plus now I can rotate properly.

This is how they sat:
30076
30077

And now:
30078
Sorry I couldn't find a side shot like the others but you can kinda see how the rear sits tucked in a little....as it does stock. It doesn't bother me though....beats hearing all that rubbing and worrying about it damaging the tire's sidewall.
