Saw the post below this one about the "old" passenger side airbag recall. Instead of posting to the 80th page, I am posting this one, as most of the other posts are old.
Here's the link from NHTSA post:http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchResults?refurl=email&searchType=ID&targetCategory=R&searchCriteria.nhtsa_ids=15V318

It reads:
Report Receipt Date: MAY 28, 2015
NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V318000

Potential Number of Units Affected: 420,661

Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC

SUMMARY:
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2002-2005 325i, 325xi, 330i, and 330xi Sedans, and 325xi and 325i Sportswagons, 2002-2006 330Ci, 325Ci, and M3 Convertibles and 325i, 330i, and M3 Coupes, 2002-2003 M5, 540i, 525i Sedan, and 530i Sedans, and 540i and 525i Sportswagons, and 2003-2004 X5 3.0i and 4.4i Sports Activity Vehicles. Please note that the 5-series and X5 vehicles are only included if they are equipped with the optional sports steering wheel. The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.
CONSEQUENCE:
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
REMEDY:
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front driver air bag module, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Note: This recall supersedes recall 14V-348 in its entirety. Additionally, vehicles that have had their driver side frontal air bag replaced previously as part of a recall remedy need to have their air bag replaced under this recall as well. NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

I got my driver's side letter from BMW about 3 weeks ago, and contacted the dealer just last week. They said that it is still pending while they assemble the replacement parts supply. He did not know when appointments would be available. Awesome, since I am leaving the country in a month...

I inquired with my service advisor via email yesterday and this was her response...

"Ok, did some research….this is the story in a nutshell:

Up until May 2015, the E46 affected by the driver side airbag recalls were any produced from January 2004 and on. Below is your vehicle data (for both cars) and you’re in the clear on those dates, which is why every time I check it always says “NO OPEN CAMPAIGNS”. HOWEVER, last month, BMW, Takata and NHTSA expanded the recall and have decided that SOME E46s produced 2002-2006 are affected, and are currently in the process of deciding which vehicles will require the replacement. So as of right now, No BMW owners are having any driver side airbag recalls completed until BMW updates the campaign."

As of right now it looks like we wait...

+1 on additional passenger side recall notice.
Was the recall fix recalled?
What the hell did they fix (or not fix) the first time?!?

Looks like I'm going to have to have the dealership tell me I need new brakes again after putting new brakes on the week before, and drive a Nissan Versa for a couple days.

I'm taking the e90 to the dealer this Friday for a recall. I will discuss with my SA about the e46 driver side recall, and ask him to write my name on the "waiting-for-parts" list.

I've now visited both of the BMW dealerships in the area and neither one could say when they would have the necessary part to perform the recall on my car. Tried to get on a list for when they do arrive but both dealerships said they would contact me first. Hmm...

I went to the dealer today and asked my SA about the driver side recall. He printed a "Warranty Vehicle Inquiry" for my car and it says:

Add date : 6/2/2015
Comment status : active
Vehicle comment : recall 15v-318 Takata driver side airbag. Recall package not ready for release. Service information bulletin will be published when repair becomes available.

I also asked to be added to the waiting list, but he said the list does not exist until BMW NA gives them green light to start fixing the cars.

I had what 10-11 e46s over the last 7 years, don't hold your breath on Fairfax, they never changed one single airbag for me, always were on order. And I'm tight with the parts counter & service dept after spending several $K per year with them, they do take care of me, told me they'd call whenever the airbags came in, I never ever got a call.

I'm guessing this is how it's gonna be unless you continue to show up face-to-face and continue to ask the status of the airbag recall....

My guess would be to minimize the chance they're carrying around a shrapnel-flinging airbag?

As far as I know the design of the airbags have not changed and they are still using this dangerous propellent. In fact news articles specifically pointed this out. What is ensuring the new airbags will not be suseptible to the same issue in a few years time?

Good to know. Why don't they use a different propellant? Or am I expecting too much of a recall...

I think they're addressing these "high risk" cars with an interim solution while they're working on making parts available for the overall recall.

Kind of confirms my earlier concerns about the new modules having the same issue as the old one. Everyone who rushed to have theirs done is going to need to have it done again once the "improved" part is made.

cakM3
08-28-2015, 02:20 PM
I think the interim solution BMW is talking about is in regards to the Driver's side airbag... not the passenger's side. I know the passenger's side airbags on both my BMWs were done in accordance with the official recall notice so those were with the "improved" parts but only time will tell....

Based on the notice I posted for everyone, I don't think BMW has the parts necessary to do the official recall notice in regards to the Driver's side air bag recall so they are doing the interim (meaning they will use existing inventory) to replace airbags for cars in Florida and Hawaii only, then when parts are made available for the official Driver's side airbag recall (whenever that will be), all cars (including Florida and Hawaii) will be called in to have their airbags replaced....

Agreed. From reading the NHTSA FAQ, the concern seems to be with the propellant wafers changing as they age. So I guess a new airbag with the same propellant is better than one with 9+ year old propellant, until they can manufacture new ones with the new propellant.

Jphilbeck
08-29-2015, 07:50 PM
The recall is on all of the cars and shows up on DCS when we scan your key but the part is on backorder. They want to replace those in Hawaii and Florida first. We will all still get the replacement when parts are more readily available. We went through the same thing when the passenger side recall was first released.
