Broken Piece Near Intake MAF Sensor

Hey team ZHP,

I'm in the middle of doing the simple DISA repair from GAS (http://www.germanautosolutions.com/product.php?product=115). Thinking I'd be really smart and save myself the trouble of removing the airbox I pulled off the intake duct behind the MAF. After doing so some parts collided and now I'm the proud new owner of a broken... thing (whatever it is). After some nerve-wracking fishing-out of broken pieces from the intake I moved on to doing the DISA repair.

(not arranged correctly I now realize)

This little guy must serve a purpose considering that it's in there, but I'm hoping that it's not a critical part so that I'm able to drive the car for a couple of days before going back in there to replace it.

Have any of you experienced running without this part, or are able to advise on what effect that might have?

I'm assuming it's structural so the hose clamp doesn't deform it when tightened. Probably fine without it... :dunno

It can't provide much support as its so flemsy. I thought it was for air flow (disturbance).

It is meant for air flow. The goal of the screen and the "crosshairs" is to create a laminar flow for the MAF to read correctly. However, I'm not sure how much of an impact it has with the crosshairs torn off. Mine seems to work so far.
