Finally decided to start myself a maintenance thread. Ive owned the car for just over a year now and ive loved every second of it. This has been the first car Ive been super OCD about. Ive also learned a whole lot with this car as well. So far ive done all the maintenance myself as i don't really trust alot of other people working on my baby.
Well, Here it is all up to date as of today.

It wasn't as bad as I was expecting! The only thing I had a problem with was getting the old rear spring out. But once I got the one side done, the other side was a breeze. Total time with doing some adjustments was about 5 hours.
Alignment will be done within the next week or so!

I bought a kit from ecs, the only thing that didn't work for me was the wrench for the bleeder screws. I opted for the schwaben over the motive because the schwaben had a pressure relief valve on it. Not a huge necessity but it was a nice added feature.

Spent the weekend doing a two step polish. I forgot how much of a pain that was. She doesn't look perfect but definitely looks a lot better.
First I clayed the whole car followed by a cutting polish and then a final polish. Topped off with a fresh coat of wax! I'm pretty happy with the outcome.
I planned on painting my calipers/hubs this weekend as well but I ran out of time. Looks like that's next weekends project!

I was leaning towards black, but now I'm thinking silver would look pretty good with the dark color of the car. I'll have to look around to see what colors look good. Definitely between black or sliver though

Sweeeet!
What was your process? Did you take them off and clean them, did you spray the rotors at all? Does that paint come in the dark grey like in the other posts?
Ssparrow
05-21-2015, 07:42 PM
Thanks! Process was fairly simple, I took off the retaining clip and that was all. Soaked everything in brake cleaner for a while and scrubbed them with a wire brush then sprayed them off with a hose and used an air compressor to dry all the nooks and crannys. Then masked off the rotor surface and all the Rubber bushings/piston, as well as the brake line and bleed screw. I painted the rotors only on the hub as they were extremely rusted too. It would of been better to take the calipers off in my opinion but a lot more time consuming. I think the finished product looks great for not taking the calipers off!
And I'm actually not sure about the dark grey, the auto parts store (Napa) only had black, red, and silver. I'm sure there is other places with more options though.

Nice! What method did you use to flush the power steering fluid? I was annoyed when I was swapping out my fuel filter that the new one didn't have the rubber housing like the old one. I nearly ripped the rubber housing trying to get it off to transfer it to the new one. Did yours come with it?
Ssparrow
06-15-2015, 07:12 PM
Thanks! I used redline ATF for the power steering fluid and just used a fluid pump to get out as much of the fluid as I could, then filled up with new fluid and turned the wheel left and right a handful of times, then repeated. And as for the fuel filter, I actually bought a installation kit from bav auto, came with new hoses as well as hose clamps. And if you were talking about the rubber bit that goes around the filter itself, mine came with a new one! I'm glad I ordered the installation kit though, I ripped the vacuum hose and ended up cutting the rest to get the damn thing off

Ah, thanks for the info. Yeah, I got my fuel filter from a TMS maintenance kit and opted not to get fresh fuel hoses so I had to certainly wrestle with them for a long time to get them off without destroying them. I'll definitely replace them next time around.

I noticed we're running the same wheels, but you've got 255s in the back versus my 265s. Do your rear tires ever rub? I've noticed mine rub occasionally against the outer fender. If they don't rub, did you ever roll your fenders or anything?

Sorry for the giant hiatus guys, been a busy summer/fall for me. Ive missed this place! I need to work on being a lot more active. Im happy to say that the ZHP is still running/driving beautifully. Not too much has been done since my last update besides an oil change, and i found a used Dinan muffler just to old me off until i can fork up the cash for at least a cat back exhaust. Also put in the all weather floor mats :thumb Not too excited to have to drive this thing in the snow though.
Next few things on the list also include; (not in order)
A professional buff and polish
Coby rewrapped (or leather) steering wheel
New window tint all around
New door speakers in the front doors (Id really like to replace every speaker, but my wallet says otherwise)
Address the speaking I'm getting in my front left caliper
Im also not extremely happy with the stance currently. I definitely need some wheel spacers in the front and possibly in the rear. I need to raise the rear up a tad as well.
On to some sub par photos! I recently bought myself a Canon DSLR for a decent starter camera. Its still completely new to me but I'm real anxious to start learning!

Hey thanks! its good to be back here. As for the speakers i was actually thinking of BSW as well, I have their iPhone control module and its proved me well. I also really like the ease of plug and play. The thought of a stereo shop ripping my car apart scares me a bit. :shifty

Agreed. There are not many options. The BavSound kit is pretty straight forward. A bit of a hassle with the small door speakers (separating carrier and glueing speakers to said carrier).

Yes, there is a difference. But, you can DIY your own kit and get way more bang for the buck. But this is no brainer plug and plug, but you pay for it. I added a subwoofer to my BSW and that was the icing on the cake and it really sounds good.

I recently joined the forum and came upon your project thread. I love your ZHP! Color is fantastic. And your engine bay is so clean. Very impressive. Mine is silver grey metallic and I polished today - doesn't look anywhere as good as yours. Perhaps due to silver not capable of deep shine as darker colors. Or perhaps I need a better product. I used Pinnacle swirl remover and polish products with porter cable unit.

Hey I appreciate that a lot! I luckily was able to find a really clean car, but there is definitely some flaws, I have some pretty bad road rash up front and pealing clearcoat on the rear bumper. Hopefully I can get those resprayed this spring. As for buffing/polishing I use chemical guys v36 followed buy v38, then a coat of wax. (If anyone has suggestions for a good wax please let me know.
Your car looks great! I've always been a huge fan of that color, looks like a great ride! [emoji106]🏼

Got some goodies for the zhp today. Not sure when I'll get around to installing em hopefully we get a nice weekend soon! I'm so ready for spring, seeing my poor car filthy is saddening. But I guess it could always be worse!
Anyways, I received these today
Z4M FCABs
Steering coupler
UUC RTAB (still debating on whether or not I'll install these or go for the bimmerworld spherical ones. I need to check and see how bad they actually are)
I also bought myself a MIS RTAB Tool to make the install easier. I've debated on selling/renting it out after I'm all done using it.

As for the wheel, i went with Black Alcantera with a dove grey center stripe and tri-stitch, Both boots are black with tri-stitch as well :biggrin

Yeah I have some door rattles I need to deal with as well. I'm getting new door clips, the ones with rubber and foam to see if that'll help any. Their part numbers are (numbers are for a coupe):

Thanks for the p/ns! Do you know the different between the two? I Just checked and I have 35 (wasn't sure how much the sedan needed lol) of the clips on order right now, but they are the latter of the two you posted(the one ending in 81). They look the same to me?

Good choice on the wheel and boots! I wish I would've gotten grey stitching on the black alcantara for all of my items. I still love the tri-stitch on my wheel though!
I regret not paying more attention to the quality of sound from the HK's. I usually drove around with the volume down, listening to the car lol. I still do that pretty often but I don't have a good comparison of the differences in the two systems.

I believe the ones that end in 781 have rubber gaskets/washer/things while the ones that end in 768 have foam instead. According to RealOEM.com, coupe doors have a mix of both. I was looking into them and I think on m3forum.net there was a thread about which went where. Apparently, the ones with rubber washers go in three spots vertically at the front of the door near the hinge, while the foam ones are for all other spots. I'm not sure why, maybe something to do with preventing water seepage? RealOEM doesn't show that for my car, just a mix of the two. I also now have interior door cards from a 2006 M3 and they're all white clips with no foam, so I'm not sure what the deal is. Either way, I plan to get a bunch of ones with the foam and hope that helps eliminate some rattle.

Big day for the zhp today. I got a package from ecs tuning, which included Chemical guys wax, Door card clips, Bentley manual, trunk handle gasket and sound deadening. Now I finally installed my bsw stage one!
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160302/491bf16470c13d4e6b2d1487d60f0e2f.jpg
The install went great and didn't have any hiccups, im fairly certain the new clips and sound deadening helped my rattles I was having.
I haven't really been able to drive around and listen to these bad boys, just a quick test to make sure they all worked and sounded good. I'll post a review once the break-in period is over!
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160302/f1e93a8848300eae45df955170ef8159.jpg
Finally I replaced the trunk handle gasket, the old one was all sorts of kinked and bent and allowed water to get into my trunk handle burning out my ziza bulbs... Oh well, good as new now!

Nice work. Looks like you went with the foam door clips?
Also, what sound deadening did you buy? Did you get it to eliminate road noise or to enhance speaker sound?

Yep, I ended up replacing every single clip with these foam ones, throughout the whole process I only found 2 broken clips and only a handful that had foam gaskets on them. Probably a little overkill but oh well
As for the sound deadening, I used Boommat. Came in pack with 8 sheets and I used nearly 2 sheets per door, I'm kind of wishing I used a little more on my front doors but it's no biggie. I did it to reduce vibrations in the cabin and help with sound quality. Drove to work this morning and enjoyed a nice drive with no creaks or rattles! The speakers sound great too!

I believe that's just the factory sound deadening on the rear deck panel, the thought of adding some boom mat back there definitely crossed my mind, but I wasn't about to take off my deck panel just for that. Maybe one day!
As for the Boommat, so far so good! I've definitely noticed less rattles/vibrations inside the cabin. Id definitely recommend doing it anytime, especially if you are taking your door cards off in the first place.

Finally got a chance to install my Z4M fcabs, steering coupler, and RTABS today.
First i changed out the steering coupler, Fairly straightforward to do, Got it completely installed in about 45 minutes. Definitely a noticeable difference! I couldn't tell how bad the old coupler actually was until i had it off the car. Steering feels nice and tight now!
Next i tackled the FCABs. Ive had a slight play in the front and I had a feeling it could of been the FCABs.I had Meyle HD on before and they were shot after only 15k. I highly advise to avoid meyle for FCABs! installed the new Z4M FCABs and everything feels nice and solid now.
Finally I decided to get under the rear end and check out how bad my RTABs actually where. I had some tramlining/bump steer issues and they were driving me crazy, so I went ahead and replaced them with UCC Poly bushings. Not completely desirable, but they will do until I can get the Bimmerworld spherical RTABs. The MIS tool worked excellent, i don't know how i could of done it without that tool. Got one side done in about an hour and the other side done in only 45 minutes. :rockon
After all was said and done, I took the car for a quick spin and the car feels so planted around corners and just in general. Im happy! Heres a few pictures from the day! :thumbs

I bought mine from ECS tuning, but i believe it could be found on amazon too. For probably cheaper too. Heres a link to the one I bought.

You might not even need that much since you have a coupe, I used about 2 mats per door, and they were decently covered. Be careful handling the edges of that stuff! they are extremely sharp.

Today, I received my rebuilt front calipers from Turner Motorsports, Stoptech stainless steel brake lines, and some Pentosin super dot 4.
Ive been having a squeaky brake caliper on both fronts for almost a year now and it drives me crazy. Constant squeak while driving, then the second I hit the brakes it goes away. I was originally thinking it was the rotors, but after inspecting the piston in the caliper on the drivers side i saw some decent amounts of rust.
At only 65 bucks per side, (including a core charge I think) I decided to buy both left and right sides. Man these things look good! I am highly impressed with the quality of the rebuilds. The came with all the necessary hardware/bushings as well! Next, I plan on doing some slotted rotors and new brake pads. I'd love to hear your guys recommendations on both those! :thumbs
Hopefully will be able to install these bad boys this weekend if it doesn't rain.

I decided to go with stoptech slotted rotors and hawk HPS pads.

Yeah my old calipers were extremely rusted. I've been having a squeaky left front caliper for ever now and I'm hoping this will solve my problem! I too will hopefully tackle this job this weekend.
One thing I noticed, the caliper rebuilds came in a centric box, my stop tech rotors also came in a centric box. I'm not sure if turner rebuilds them theirselves or sends them out for rebuilds. Either way they look great!

Today I installed my new caliper rebuilds, new stoptech slotted rotors, stainless steel brake lines, and Hawk HPS brake pads. Feels great to have nearly brand new braking up front! If this doesn't fix my brake squeak problem, then I don't know what will.
I haven't gotten a chance to bed them in yet, Plan on waiting till tonight that way the freeway will be clear. The pedal feels nice and firm though! I figured I'll drive it around for some miles and re bleed the brakes using my pressure bleeder.
Now that the front is done, I'm itching to get the rear redone! Plan on doing everything besides the calipers.

Little update, last weekend I got a chance to install my m3 mirrors!
The process was definitely time consuming and a little nerve racking, but I'm definitely happy with the outcome. Wouldn't be possible without the rouge guide on how to cut the base plates and Charlie's diy on how to swap the mirror motors over to the m3 mirrors.
I ran out of time and wasn't able to swap the passenger side motor over. The drivers side is functional, I still think I need to do some adjustments. The movement is a little funky.
I also just left the base plates mystic blue for now, I ran out of time and didn't want to have to remove them again. I honestly kind of like the way it looks, I may paint them eventually
Here's some quick photos of the process

Then I removed the rear door cards to reseal the vapors with butyl tape. Hopefully this should solve the leaking I'm having. Plan on doing the front tomorrow as the passenger side leaks too.
Also tried to isolate some rattles today. I swear this is an ongoing process. I used some silicone sealant on the clips holding the door panels on, And taped up some of the loose cables as well as I could. I then stuffed some rags up into the rear deck, seems to help a little but time will tell.
I have a "squeak" somewhere around the rear seats. I have been trying to find it every since I bought the car, but with no luck. Happens when I drive on uneven roads, and is decently loud. Almost like leather rubbing on leather. But I still haven't been able to find it. Anyone deal with this? Very annoying!

I finally made myself maintenance spreadsheet. Took forever, but it'll be nice to have a detailed, organized maintenance log from here on out. Completely updated as of today!

Well, the hunt to find rattles has officially started. Today I took off the b pillar and tried to fix the rattle on the seatbelt slide mechanism. I believe found the source of the rattle,

Used some silicone on the Washer in the middle of the mechanism. Haven't drove it yet but hopefully this helps
Also got my windows retinted! The old tint was super faded and bubbled. Went with suntech Carbon tint. Legal in the front, 18% in the rear. Little darker than I was hoping for but I'm definitely happy with it! I'll try to snag a picture tomorrow

God speed on the rattle search. It's an endless rabbit hole, IMO.
And post pics of the new tint. I have SunTek Carbon 38 on my car and have liked it. Works well with my dark interior.

Thanks! Hopefully this will take care of the most annoying rattle I have.

I'm starting to think that as well. I don't know if it's just my car but damn it's a rattle trap. Im sure the roads here play a big part on that.
I'm starting to take care of some of the major rattles though so hopefully I can get to a point where I'm content.
I'll be sure to post a picture of the tint soon! Car desperately needs a good bath. So far I'm loving the tint. My old tint must of not done a whole lot because now my car stays about 10 degrees cooler!

Gave her a nice bath today. Hopefully it'll stay clean for longer than a few days!

My poor bumper needs to be painted bad. Just haven't found a good paint shop around here yet. Hopefully soon though!

It's the way of the world. I washed my car on Sunday and not 4 hours later did it have bird poop on it. It is literally this, I swear:

Looks awesome! FINALLY, the 10-day forecast looks to be totally rain-free at this point... At least it'll stay clean for more than a day!
