Hi guys,

I'm looking at a '05 ZHP sedan with 200k on it w/ steptronic. The miles on the engine don't worry me too much but I'm a bit weary of the steptronic. Anyone experience issues with these? How reliable are they? I don't want to get it and then have it crap out.
Is it too much to buy a ZHP with 200k on it as well? Car looks like new, very clean.
Thoughts?

Without service records, I will be very hesitant to buy this car. Some years ago (2010) I had my 1999 e46 and when it reached 150k miles I started to be paranoid about the AT. My Indy agreed the AT was still original and then I decided to sell. The car was running perfectly but I decided to avoid future headaches.

GL with your decision.

I hear a lot of FUD about steptronic but that is the most produced E46. I don't know of any mass failings on these. They are not as bullet proof as manuals and yes, I'm sure some fail. It would not stop me from buying one by any means. I'd use other metrics to decide on my car, such as maintenance records like Fredo said.

I've heard of the reverse gear going out at 80k and other e46s with 300k on the original AT.

I believe used autos are going for about $500, so it's not a crazy expense I guess?

Wouldn't be afraid.
Would definitely do a few drain & fills with the tranny fluid and change out the filter/gasket.
It's a GM transmission, and Dexron VI is everywhere. Go for it.

Not all are GM. Mines a ZF.
