View Full Version : GAS DISA repair kit - group buy
Just_George

As we have been discussing in another thread, we're putting together a group buy from German Auto Solutions (GAS) Items of particular interest are their DISA rebuild kit and their coolant cap, although I suppose any item they offer is eligible. Their regular pricing on these items is:
DISA repair kit - $79.95 http://www.germanautosolutions.com/bmw_solutions/disa_products/m54_m52tu/m54_disa_repair_kit/product_m54_disa_repair_kit.php
Coolant cap (black only) - $34.95 http://www.germanautosolutions.com/bmw_solutions/cooling_system/12_bar_coolant_cap/product_bmw_12_bar_cap.php
Combo DISA kit/Coolant cap - $104.90
Shipping is $7.95/flat rate box, 1-3 days. If your order requires the bigger flat rate box, shipping is $14.95 (small box will accommodate 2 DISA kits or 1 combo) If our total # of orders exceeds 10, we'll get a 10% discount. If we exceed 20 orders, the discount will be 15%. 30 orders or more will get us 20% off. I'm in for two DISA kits, so we're off and running!
Note: I'm going to assume everyone needs a DISA kit for an M54 3.0l motor - if you need something else, note it!
For now, list your username and items(s) wanted. One week from now, I'll tally up the orders and we'll see what prices will be dependent on the number of orders. I'll then have everyone Paypal the money to me, place the order with GAS and provide them with the list and addresses.

Don't think the vanos seal kit ($60) will be a problem - I've asked Katy to verify that. Fluorosilicone gasket adds $5.30 to price of DISA kit.
Current list:
1) Just_George (Dave) - 2 DISA repair kits
2) wsmeyer - 1 - DISA repair kit with fluorosilicone gasket and 1 - VANOS Seal Kit (can't hurt to ask)

Since a few of us want the VANOS kits as well maybe there's a $$ goal instead of just a number of DISA kits

I'd be in if I can only purchase a cap, I bought my rebuild kit only a month or 2 ago

The goal and discount is only based on the # of products purchased, not just DISA kits. You can buy just the cap, price is listed in the first post.

2 questions:
1. Is the coolant cap a critical item? Just curious if anyone has used it...
2. Does the DISA kit with fluorosilicone gasket cost extra, compared to the $79 kit, or is it included in the regular kit? EDIT: found the answer: It's a bit extra looks like.
1) coolant cap is not critical however it is a lower pressure tank cap. G.A.S has an explanation on their website.
2) it is extra.

George, I think setting up this group buy is an awesome thing! Katy took good care of me when I recently got my red 1.2bar radiator cap from them. I know she will take good care of everyone on this group buy :thumbsup

Per the GAS website, all BMW coolant caps are 1.4 bar - their claim is that's too high, that their cap at 1.2 bar will prevent catastrophic cooling system failures. Whether or not you choose to believe that is a different story, but the caps do look nice!

M54 is 2 bar. M20 is apparently 1.4 bar. GAS is 1.2.

For some reason I thought the E46 cap was 1.4bar but I just looked in the Bentley manual and it is 2bar.
That's a huge difference. In addition to the points I brought up in the other thread, you are drastically lowering the boiling point of the coolant. Liquids boil when their vapor pressure exceeds the atmospheric pressure. This is why water under a vacuum will boil at room temperature. Conversely, the boiling temperature will increase if you put it under pressure. I don't know what the vapor pressure of the water mixed with coolant is so I'll just have to use plain water as an example.
1bar - 212F --> typical atmospheric pressure at sea level
2bar - 248F --> pressure under OEM cap
1.2bar - 220F --> pressure under G.A.S. cap

I see us at 16 items currently - we've already qualified for a 10% discount, if we get to 20 items the discount is 15%. Close, so close!! Daniel, we're good to go with placing the order, only question remaining is which discount we'll qualify for.

Wait...who sets the timeframe? Why not just leave it going until we get the 30% discount? Isn't that a win/win for everyone, GAS gets a windfall of business and the customers get a solid discount and a solid group of folks get excellent products?

Some people did I think, you can see on the list
I personally read a lot about it on forums and decided that other than cosmetics there's no benefit from it
We need some sort of deadline for the group buy - can't go on indefinitely without knowing how long it would take to fulfill number of orders for 30% discount... I of course don't have any authority over this, but I think it's good to have a deadline of some sort.

This is true, but frankly, I was asking that more so in the sense that the time frame needs to be considered for Quality Assurance purposes as well as customer satisfaction. I think we would want them to focus on small batches and make sure the kits are produced correctly and given to those who are in need of replacement first and those who just have it on the list can wait a little bit longer as batches are produced, quality checked and sent out. I have absolutely no doubt the products will be excellent, but the group buy is definitely a unique setup as far as order fulfillment compared to usual practices, IMO.

I agree that having 30+ orders would be great but theres been a few people talking sbout their DISA being bad and needing to replace it. Those guys may need theirs a bit sooner, i personally do not. I am doing this as preventative maintenance. As far as their product quality, I already have their cap and while not installed yet the quality is there. I expect the same results with this GB. I dont think they would rush production and put out a bad product.

Dave, not sure if GAS will be making any more red coolant caps. I know when I got mine, Katy told me they were shifting to just making black ones so I was led to believe that mine is one of the last ones they will make in red. Charlie, I got a red one same time as you, and like you was under the understanding that GAS would no longer be making the coolant caps in red (although Katy says they've had a lot of request for them all of a sudden!) That's why, in the original post, I noted that the coolant caps would be black only.
Squashman - please let me know if you're okay with the cap in black or wish to change your order.
Regarding the timing and availability - frankly, I assumed that they would have these in stock and ready to go. I'll shoot an email to Katy asking for clarification. In the event that they do NOT have enough in stock, I'll ask for any members here that need their items ASAP to let me know so I can pass that info along to Katy and get those orders shipped first.

So guys, one very minor fly in the ointment - I'm in Michigan, and so is GAS. Because of that, I'd have to pay our 6% sales tax on all the orders (since technically I'm ordering everything) However, if someone is willing to help (Badclown, are you out there?) I think I have a way to avoid that. I'll still collect all the money, put together the spreadsheet to send to Katy, etc....all I need is a "middleman" to actually send it all to her. I'm assuming that if that person is not in Michigan, then we avoid the sales tax.

Apologies in advance for any inconvenience:
I have decided not to participate in the Group Buy at this moment.
(A friend of mine who had bought a GAS DISA kit but unfortunately wrecked his 330i before he could install it, has agreed to sell his kit for half price (he noticed a youtube video i posted on my Facebook page about upgrading the DISA and contacted me last night - nice guy!). All I need to get from GAS now is the Fluorosilicone O-ring, as his kit has a regular one.)
Just_George: Please remove me from the list as soon as you get a chance. I PM'd you too, just to make sure.
Good luck on the GB, and wishing all of you guys happy upgrading. Again, sorry about any inconvenience this causes.

Will start collecting funds this weekend - need to wait until we close the deal to see if we get to a higher discount! Meanwhile, a couple of things to share from Katy: Still working on what we can do to avoid paying the Michigan 6% sales tax. I wouldn't mind myself, being in MI I kinda have to anyway, but I'm assuming the rest of you would rather not, so investigating options along those lines. Also, for reasons I don't completely understand, GAS doesn't offer the option of the fluorosilicone gasket when you buy the DISA kit/coolant cap option. I've asked her if it can be added as a separate item - will report back when I get an answer. Also, they do have a limited number of the coolant caps in red coming in very shortly. Again, they don't offer them in combination with the DISA kit, but you can buy them as a separate item for $2 more than the black cap (i.e. $36.95 rather than $34.95)
Again, a reminder - if anyone is in a hurry to get their items, let me know and I'll put you at the top of the list so your order is handled first.
Currently at 18 items - 2 more to get to 15% discount!

Okay, we're currently at 21 items, so 15% discount applies! I have calculated totals for everyone except Slater (need to verify shipping cost for Ontario) First thing tomorrow morning, I will send the spreadsheet to Katy to verify that everything is correct - if so, then I will post the totals and ask everyone to Paypal the money to me - PLEASE make sure to include a full name and shipping address with the payment! Oddly enough, the one I did today was a DISA valve that was put on the car just before I bought it (2010), so it's pretty new and has few miles on it, so it was in very good shape. Did it just for piece of mind... When I did the kit on the ZHP a month or so ago, that DISA valve was in BAD shape - the pin had started to work it's way out, and the bell crank had worn so much, the flapper just flopped around loosely. I also cleaned the idle control valve at that time, which was gummed up and stuck. Can't say that I notice a big difference after doing that, but I feel a lot better knowing it's fixed and I won't have to worry about it any longer.

I did mine as PM as well. I didn't really noticed a big difference but it was a good piece of mind. Pretty sure mine was original but was still in pretty good shape aside from the oring. I'd definitely be down for a ccv group buy when (if) it ever comes out! One thing I haven't replaced on my car yet

Question for the people that have installed the disa rebuild kit. Have you guys been installing them into factory bmw disa units ?
I started my install today and ran into an issue. Got everything apart which was nice and easy. However upon installation, the bell crank lever does not rotate smoothly inside the housing. This is with the flap installed and without a flap. With it out together, I can barely rotate the flap with my hands.
Looking at the disa unit, I have a vaico brand one.

I did this already. The old one is worn but it's almost the same size.
After looking at it further, the new metal bell crank lever does not go far enough into the housing. It just bottoms out while the old bell crank lever that is plastic goes back in easy.
I pushed the metal bell crank lever further in. It did not want to rotate so I pulled it back out, it came out with the seal on it as well as the bushing that is inside the housing.
I was under the idea that the rebuild kit will work on any brand of disa
Here is a picture of the flaps. They are identical in size.

Both of the ones I did were on OEM DISA valves, and I had zero problems. It's possible that Vaico did something slightly different from the OEM...I'd call GAS and ask if they are aware of any issues with this. Sorry you're having problems...

Cool !
It's normal for the center pin to protrude more from the top compared to the old pin I assume ?

I followed this when I did mine. Pretty straight forward and I took my time with a few refreshing beverages on a Friday night. Once you get into it, it will make sense on assembly!

What you see protruding is actually part of the housing. The rebuild kit gets rid of the pin and is replaced with a bolt from the other side.

This. I would be interested in another group buy for a cap and VANOS kit if enough people get in on it.

I would thoroughly research posts on this and other forums how ( or if) the cap can actually be a disadvantage before deciding - I read everything I could find on this thread and many other much more in depth threads at the other two forums about it and decided to keep the oem cap. It seemed like GAS could not defend their argument about the lower pressure cap being a benefit in one long thread where it got very technical and in depth - just the impression I had.
I just think it's prudent to read all those threads in bimmerfest and E46f before deciding.

Took mine off and was going to do it while I watched the LBGP but so clean and nothing loose so part of me is thinking if it ain't broke...

One of mine was like that, relatively new and in great shape. I rebuilt it anyway - piece of mind and I won't ever have to worry about it again... Just out of curiosity, are you changing the o-ring either way?

I would recommend doing it if you have the kit on hand. It will most likely fail at some point.
