Alright folks... bought the wife a Honda Pilot, so I'm free to get a fun DD. Practicality means nothing. Help me out....
Here's the list so far:
*C5 vette
*Honda S2000
*Audi TT 225Q
*E36 M3 - missed a chance on a good one last weekend
I'm open to other ideas as well. Price range is $14k or less.
Go!

I'm voting E36 M3 from your list. Audi TT's are supposed to be a real pain for any engine work as the manual usually begins with: "Step 1, remove front bumper...". Not so with the M. 😀

Well, a C55 AMG would be a hoot! I love my 2003 Audi A4 Quattro "battlewagon" - it serves us well running errands; however, I doubt we ever buy another Audi as they are just too maintenance intensive - we do not think they are as reliable long term as the BMW. Just had to swap out the auto trans with a salvage auto trans - apparently Audi autos known for issues. Replaced timing belt for $$. Replaced suspension bushings. All maintenance items but I had better service out of my 2005 325 (250k miles and still going) and my 2005 ZHP (RIP).
I would shop for a 335/535 or ZHP in that price range. Check out Donohoo or IQ Auto - they often have deals on factory buybacks - I have been watching those for 135/335/535.

335i coupe. I'm pretty sure the earlier ones (2007 or so) fall in your budget. Have fun !

Will you be keeping the ZHP or is that going?

I don't have a ZHP, currently.
Add BMW M Roadster to the list.

I'm open to it, but it would need to be pretty special... even for a not so special car.

As much as I like the e36 m3 sedans, I think a zhp is a better option. Get one in imola or mystic blue.

2001 got S54
97-98 2.8 was the rare M52 single VANOS car that actually got an alloy block. All other single VANOS M52s in North America had iron blocks

BP, are you anywhere close to Fairfield? That's where that m roadster is. I'm definitely interested in it and plan to call the guy today. Didn't know if you'd be willing to check it out?

+1 on the Audi issues. Had a 2005 S4, and catastrophic transmission failure led me to get rid of it. Went back in for a new S6, and loved it, but constantly fear it'll need $$ repairs any moment once it gets a few more years on it. Newly switched to ZHP (needed to cut back on auto spend) from S6, and love the ZHP too! Definitely miss the luxury of the S6, but the ZHP feels like a tank and will be on the road long after the S6 has given up the ghost! Go ZHP all the way! I'll add that I also considered 335i, but I liked the price range on the ZHP a bit more, even factoring in the maintenance it'll need...

I just saw an E36 330ti for sale. It was a 318ti purchased brand new and it was driven straight to a shop to get an S50 and other M3 goodies installed within 500 miles of new purchase. I just saw the ad for it and it is really amazing! It looks like no expense was spared and it wouldn't surprise me considering how much a crate motor and tranny cost as well as all that other M3 goodness. It's pretty much an M3 only as a hatchback and with about 700 pounds less weight!

How so? I don't have the time to go look at it. It's already at the top of the price range, so shipping it would put it above the price range.

that is a cool, cool car. saw it on BaT this morning.
S2000 gets my vote. pass on the TT... had one. awful engine.
i also would check out the M roadster. my dad had one about 10 years ago and it was a hoot. needed better damping though - factory dampers at 3 years old were not up to the task.

If we're eschewing Audi's for being high-maintenance, then what about our... oh, never mind... love is blind... and I have no regrets.
Still, I have to admit a certain occasional lusting for a mistress that is fun, fast, & sporty, has a sweet soulful voice & a sinfully sensuous body AND is reliable almost to a fault... her name is G37 Coupe. Her older sister G35 is also, BTW Pirate, all those things and well within your target pricing.

The problem with the G35 is that it's hard finding a manual that hasn't been beat on. Trust me, I've looked.
Here's an update... I should be picking this beauty up next Saturday, pending a good PPI and my inspection upon actually seeing it in person.

We just traded our 2005 3.0 Avant as well as we did not want to deal with any trans issues. My understanding is that was/is mostly a B6 issue. the trans like the autos in our ZHPs has "lifetime" fluid and if you don't change early then it's a coin flip whether or not you have later issues. My Indy indicated its not the fluid that goes bad but the valve bodies on that trans and solution is rebuild which is in the thousands. I've owned both BMWs and Audis since the mid 90s and maintenance costs are about the same overall. If you want low maint. costs buy a Toyota. If you want German ride and handling well here we are.
