Looks like it might have a stiffer side wall - exactly what the DWS could improve on - available in May:

Yeah that's why i said "looks like" it might have a stiffer sidewall - it is not mentioned directly, you're correct:
BUT i deduced / assumed a stiffer side wall on the newer version from 2 quotes in the article (from the 1st link - see below), as one way to improve handling and cornering is a stiffer side wall, AND that Conti might have looked into the old DWS consumer and professional reviews when updating the tire, and those reviews almost always mention(ed) that one shortcoming on the old DWS is a too soft side wall... :)
“The ExtremeContactTM DWS06 is the evolution of our very popular, ExtremeContact DWS,” says Travis Roffler, director of marketing. “This is the ultimate UHP, all-season tire. We’ve maintained excellent snow traction while making improvements in wet traction, dry handling and tread life. This is a tire enthusiasts will really enjoy.”
Additionally, all-season traction is enhanced through the use of the company's Traction Grooves and X-Sipes technologies. Traction Grooves improve snow performance through increased pattern edges while X-Sipes improve braking, cornering and acceleration..

Kokesh works for tire rack and told me bout these last week. Said they still look the same as the old models.

They slightly rearranged parts of the tread pattern, so like you guys said snow performance is supposed to be maintained and dry should be improved. Honestly not sure if the sidewall is stiffer or not...haven't driven on it yet. I know they were responding to customer feedback, though. And I've heard rumors snow performance is actually better as well. Think it will be a pretty decent update to an already really solid tire.

I don't mean to thread Jack here Ryan but I have a question. I've read about tire ratings and understand they can be a sort of hit or miss rating due to the subjectivity of the tie manufacturer. I run Hankook Ventus V12's and have done so since purchasing Her back 2010. I noticed that the V12 garner a UTQG of 200 whereas these new Conti DWS garner a UTQG of 540. That being said, If I were to purchase a set of these Conti's (using the same driving style-no tracking but spirited street driving) could I expect to get a little more mileage out of these tires?
I know the reason we only get about 20-30K out of our rear tire is due to the rear camber set up on the alignment specs, but all things being equal is this a safe assumption?

Yes that would be a safe assumption. The two tires have entirely different performance categories. With my previous-gen set of DWS' (before I switched to dedicated summer/winter setups), I got about 35-40k out of them (don't remember exactly) and that includes track time. Most people don't get this kind of mileage out of their tires though. I guess I'm sort of a freak of nature when it comes to tire life; I always manage to squeeze out more than others. :dunno

BP ... did u try the Conti DW in addition to DWS ? I wonder if you got 35-40k miles on both cases.

I've never tried DW's but I don't think I ever will. I'm used to better performance at this point. lol

First test reports/reviews I've come across of the DWS06:

Ordered a set of these new Continental DWS 06XL tires yesterday from Tire Rack. 225/40 fronts and 255/35 rears. Will be locally selling the four 225/40 Yokohama tires the previous owner installed. Looking forward to returning the car to OEM stagger tires. The Yokohamas are at least 70% tread remaining but they have given me pause in cold rainy conditions. Its no fun suddenly having a wagging tail when you're not looking to make the tail wag.

Washburn, will do. Please note the car currently has a bastard arrangement with 225/40-18 tires on 8.5" rims in the rear so my impressions will likely be ravingly positive from correcting that aspect. As I recall, the new DWS 06XL tires were about $7 - $10 a tire cheaper than the DWS being phased out. I was surprised by that and my first thought was, what, has the new tire a cheaper construction? Then I thought it over a bit and figured there were folks seeking the older series as they were familiar with it and maybe Tire Rack's pricing algorithm was thus picking up on it having greater demand than the DWS 06XL. That's how I rationalized buying the slightly less expensive DWS 06XL tires. At any rate, I'll be glad to let you know my impressions sometime in the next week.

Thanks in advance.
Is the country of manufacture stamped on the tire anywhere?

Washburn, interesting you asked the country of origin question. The 255/35-18 tires are marked Made in Slovakia. The 225/40-18 tires are marked Made in Portugal. The 255 has noticeably larger open "gutters" on either side of the central tread pattern than the 225. I guess it is a matter of scale or possibly relates to the larger 255 size tire surface shedding x% more water than the 225. This is all new to me as I've not had a car with staggered tires prior to this car.

Dunno why, but like most tires different sizes are manufactured in different countries:

The before picture shows how the sidewall is vertical and not protruding past the rim with a Yokohama 225/40-18 tire on a 8.5" rim. The after picture shows a Continental DWS06 255/35-18 tire on the same 8.5" rim. Note how the sidewall protrudes past the rim. Just got the tires on the car and have only driven about ten miles mixed town and highway. The tires are quiet and ride is improved. Looks better, too, with the wider rear tires. Bottom picture is the before picture of 225 on 8.5" rim. The top picture is 255 on 8.5" rim.

I also just bought and mounted a set of these in the stock size. Now I am coming from a staggered 19" setup with Yokohama all seasons, so I expected the ride to change.
The Contis definitely are quiet. But boy do they feel soft. Ride and turn-in feels dramatically softer. I don't remember it being this soft with the Perellis I was running on there previously.

I've just purchased a new set of staggered DWS06 for my 330i ZHP. I got about 25 K from a staggered set of
S-04's. When I asked what the difference was... I was told the tire had a stiffer sidewall AND a more pronounced lip at the edge to better protect the rim from curb rash. Hopefully these will do (considerably) better on the mileage front.

Interested to see how you like these. I am not real happy with my DWS06's. They are just too soft of a sidewall. The car just feels so unsettled now.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but just got my car inspected and the rear tires *barely* passed. I'm running the older DWS, and have been happy with them, but these rears only lasted about 20k miles. Clearly I'm having more fun than some of you!!
Curious about impressions a few months on from anyone who has the DWS06's?
After running summer tires year-round for 5 or 6 years I've opted to live with a bit of softness. I'm not willing to do a summer/winter trade out and I've had a few too many sketchy winter drives on summer tires. Getting old I guess.

Also enjoyed this- warranty on the older DWS Tires:
6 Years / 50,000 miles (1) Half mileage for rear if different size than front
20k is really short. I got a little bit more from my summer tires.
How is the wear on them?

How close are they to the wear bars that are inside the tire ?

These?
Yup. That is them. You still have some life in them.
But what are you rear tire pressure set at? Looks like they might be a bit over inflated due to the wear only in the middle. Or maybe it's just the angle of the picture.
