Today I was stopped at a light and after it turned green I drove off and my engine started vibrating and shaking. When I pushed the accelarator there was a defiite loss of power. My SES light came on so I stopped and turned the engine off, waited about 5 minutes, turned it back on and drove home fine with no SES light and no shaking or loss of power. What could this have been? The shaking, in my opinon, was similar to lugging the engine.

Get the code read. It should still be stored. Report back....

2744[10052] Mis-fire cylinder 3
2745[10053] Mis-fire cylinder 6
274E[10062] Mis-fire on several cylinders
2746[10054] Mis-fire cylinder 2

When I looked up this problem earlier, other threads pointed out the problem was most likely mis-fires so I guess this just confirmed my first thought. I drove my car tonight for another hour problem-free so what should I do? Is this only a problem if it keeps mis-firing?

i'm having the same problem. At idle the engine has a slight shake, I can also feel the shake when accelerating @ 40mph.
Will take car in to BMW technician to read SES codes and report same.

Do our cars blow coil packs? Maybe time for new sparks?

Soft failure of fuel pump?

New coils and pre-cat O2 sensors seemed to help mine. I was getting misfire on #2 and it ran like crap when engine was cold and even worse when outside temp was low.

Did anyone have to remove cabin air filler housing etc to remove the engine cover and/or gain access to the coils closest to the firewall ?
Right now I just need to take the cover off and need access only to the first 3 coil packs ...
Hope I can get the engine cover off with a short extension to reach the 2nd screw that holds the engine cover

It's possible with a very small wrench but you'll spend more time fiddling around than it takes to remove the 4 T30 bolts.

For the record mine was only a disconnected coil. Such symptoms do point to coils most of the time though.

I removed my coil (passenger) side engine cover a few times for dyno testing without removing the air filter housing (which has also been off many times). I use a small 1/4" ratchet with a 10mm socket. A small 10mm box wrench might also work especially if it's offset at the end. The biggest danger to me is if the engine is really hot it hurts to rest my hand on the plastic cover, and then risk of dropping the little 10mm nut into the depths of the engine bay.
