My first time on Thunderhill West. Instructors got one long practice session on the track, then later we took students and parents for demo rides. Here's part of my practice session--it was so long I had to stop and drink some water!

nice! looks like the steering is pretty slow on the E36 - i remember that from the last time i drove one.

i have those same gloves, but in black. they are awesome.

Yes the steering is definitely slower than the ZHP. Some E36 owners even put in a Z3 or ZHP rack to speed it up. I'm thinking of doing that, you know, for my future drifting career! :-)

Here are my student demo rides. 4 students in 32 minutes: 2 teen drivers, 1 young adult driver (20's), one parent. Nobody threw up or screamed, but I wasn't the fastest demo ride by far, being passed by other instructors in both Corvettes and Miatas. The teen male (3rd passenger) declined a 4th lap, not sure if he was getting motion sickness or was bored--he said he rode in the faster black Corvette before riding with me.

BTW, if any of you have teen drivers, I highly recommend putting them through a car control clinic, whether NASA, Porsche, BMW CCA, Tire Rack/BMW, whatever. Better if it's one oriented around teen drivers, but adult CCC is good too. The director of this clinic had his daughter go through it, and the CHP officer who spoke at lunchtime had put her oldest child through it a few years ago. I'll be putting my daughter through at least one, but that has to wait 5 or 6 years.

good stuff. my kids will most definitely be doing them and i want to get them into karting before then, as well. my daughter just turned 11 and has no interest in karting, but we'll see. :)

I gone to a BMW car control clinic when I was 15 and it was very entertaining as the current 3series at the time was a facelifted e46 :)

Yeah but Derek look what happened... you spend all this money going to track days, swapped a M3 rear suspension/diff/subframe into your car, worked for a BMW dealership for a while, and how much time are you spending on ZHP Mafia? Was it really a good thing? :ducking

I wasn't going so fast on the track because the last time I tried to go really fast with a passenger at the track, it was Derbo and I crashed into another BMW 3-series (E36 with S54 motor swap). Luckily no airbag deployment that time, as it was before the recall swap. Anyway, crashing with a CCC student or parent in the car is highly discouraged, so I was extra careful.

Ohh you have a M3/4/5 too?!

What's the mods on it?

LivesNearCostco

Ha, that's me thinking "Don't crash, don't crash, don't crash, don't even spin with a student in the car!"

Johal: Got it in September. Mods are: Bilstein sport dampers, H&R Race springs, Conforti/ITG intake, UUC underdrive pulleys, Powerflex black RTABs, AKG RTAB pocket reinforcements, BimmerWorld poly transmission mounts, Porterfield R-4S semi-track pads on front, Motorsport 90mm wheel studs (from Smilez), EMP Stewart water pump, Z3M radiator, mechanical fan delete, X-brace, upgraded oil pump sprocket/shaft/nut, and HARD Motorsport oil pan baffle. Used the same 17x8.5" D-force track wheel set (245/40/17 Bridgestone RE-11A tires) I used to use on the ZHP. As far as I know, the DME/tune is stock.

Purchased but not installed: stainless steel brake lines, stainless clutch line, and Bimmerworld solid rubber motor mounts.
Desired mods not yet purchased: a heartbreakingly long list... it was cheap to buy but is going to be an expensive car in the end.

It came with ITG/Conforti intake, Bilstein sports, and H&R race springs. I did the X-brace, studs, water pump, pulleys, oil pan (shop), oil pump gear (shop), radiator, fan delete kit, and transmission mounts. Hey you've driven it!

I know! 3 of my 4 passengers even agreed to do one extra lap with me. Several of the other instructors were significantly faster, though we were all told not to push the limit with students or parents in the car.

Here is a recent AutoX video from last Saturday where I put Bridgestone RE-11A tires in front and old, dried out all-season tires (the ones that came with the car) in the rear. I expected the car would be a little loose but it turns out it was VERY loose... so not very fast this way, but lots of fun! This video also has a first timer in the car and she is not screaming at all. She even agreed to ride the next run with me. Her boyfriend was there in a Miata to do his first AutoX.

Obviously I'm not ready for Nationals. Not even ready to compete with the local yokels!

Nice moves!

My autox tracks are too small to ever do any drifts like that.

Time for the z3/zhp steering rack? Lol

Oh yes I wish I had a faster steering rack. Plan to swap one in someday, probably from The Rack Doctor.

HPDE4. Riding in my instructor's E46 M3. Stock, 90k miles, race tires. We passed everybody. "I was holding back and I could feel the tires are at the end of their life." Best roller coaster ride of my life.

Kinda, this is actually at Motlow State Community College just down the road from Lynchburg, TN, the home of Jack Daniel's. This club runs every month from March to November with less than 20 cars. Started at 11:00 finished at 2 ish with 6 runs. I did 4, worked, the finished up the other 2. Times were 64 to 68 seconds.

FYI; Lem Motlow, that the college is named after was Jack Daniel's bookkeeper and right hand man.

From my trip to Calabogie Motorsports Park this past weekend. 2-day event run by BMW CCA Patroon Chapter and BMW Car Club of Ottawa.

Day 1 - it's been a year since I was on the track. This video was taken at the session where I was back in the swing of things and just recalling what I've learned last year, which was my first time at this particular track.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfbcgMf7K7U

Day 2 - the day for improvement. Apparently there were a couple of turns that I was taught a slower line the year before, so I worked on improving those lines for better ones.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoPbHRQ5y3w

As you can see, there is considerable improvement between the two days, and can show what differences there are between instructors and how much a year can affect one's skills.

Awesome! Do you have a giant box of nails in the back seat or something? What's all that rattling?

Also, what's the camera and app you're using for this setup?

Hey Will,

The rattling is actually the GoPro Hero4 sitting in a sealed enclosure vs the skeleton housing (has holes for better audio). The rattling is the minor gap between the enclosure and the camera itself. Unfortunately without a proper external mic I suffered some poor audio.

Video is from a GoProHero4. The app for the GPS data is Harry's Laptimer. I transfer the raw footage to the iPhone and use the app to overlay the data over the video. Unfortunately I timed the overlay a few frames too early and it is slightly off. I know there was an option for syncing the gopro hero4 to record at the same time the laptimer starts a lap but I did not have enough time playing with the app to use this feature. Next time!

No Problem! :)

I would love some nicer video. I think this time I got a decent height on the way the Gopro is mounted. It's mounted using the suction cup and a bunch of the gopro extensions. In previous outings, the rear view mirror was in the way. :(

I know this post is four years old but it was cool to see your lap at Laguna Seca! It was my first time out there last weekend and I was nowhere near your lap time of 1:49, my fastest was 1:57.
