View Full Version : Unicorn Hunting... Again

Well, as most of you know, I sold my ZHP back in September and my wife and I have been a one car family since then. As much as only having the X5 is ok, its not the ideal situation. While it does scratch both the performance itch as well as the utility itch, I really need a 2nd car to own. And after much thought, I realized I'd never be content until my ideal car is in the driveway. So, the search is on! Also, as most of you know, I go out to sea for long periods, so its hard for me to watch the market and hunt for the perfect car. I'd love to enlist the help of my fellow Mafia folk, and when the time comes, I'll probably ask for some assistance with inspection and PPI if the car is not local to me.
That being said... The Details... I've listed packages and then individual options to denote if the car has that "package"... Basically, how to verify in pics if the car is equipped as such.
Absolute Non-negotiable MUST Have:
2011 E90 M3 Sedan
DCT Transmission
Premium Package (Comfort Access)
Cold Weather Package (Fold Down Rear Seats)
iDrive System (Navigation)
REALLY Want to Have: ...these items might as well be in the above list :biggrin
Competition Package (Style 359M wheels as shown)
Technology Package (EDC, M Drive)
Moonroof
Unicorn Status ...all of the above plus...
Silverstone Metallic/Silverstone leather
Carbon Leather Trim
Rear Sunshade/Rear Door roller sunvisors
Individual Audio System (silver speaker trim rings)
Color & Interior Choices, in order of Preference
Silverstone Metallic
Lemans Blue Metallic -or- Interlagos Blue Metallic
Alpine White
Melbourne Red Metallic
Palladium Silver
Sonoma Beige
Black/Fox Red/Black -or- Black/Palladium/Black
Black
Fox Red
Other Details
-Looking in the $45-50k range, less is more. :)
-The lower the mileage the better, but I'm hunting in the 30K range.
-Still has some warranty left, and bonus points for one with CPO status.
-Ideally it should be stock, no mods.
I've seen basically everything that is currently online, but please post any cars you think may fit what I want. Also, any wild card finds should be posted too. Please keep this thread on topic as I'm heading back out to sea this weekend and my internet access will be limited. I'll be getting email updates and will check in as often as I can. Thank you so much to the best group of car enthusiasts around. :thumbsup :roundel :wub

Just out of curiosity, is there something the 2011 has that the 2010 doesn't? Including 2010 might expand your search possibilities.

Well the competition package is only available in 2011 for the sedan. Also, at this point, there's no chance of getting a 2010 with any warranty left. If a perfect car came up that was a 2010, I would consider. To be honest, I really just want the newest car possible.

He's priced too high for everyone! No competition package, not even the 19" Style 220M wheels, no EDC, and the boring black interior with base trim (brushed aluminum), he's definitely high, about $5k or so.
Thanks for posting though, it is a nice car.

Keep the wife in the x5M, and get yourself a garage queen toy, like maybe

Lol, the wife will stay in the X5, but this will be my garage queen. Not interested in an E46 anymore, they're getting older and age will show. Besides, many are saying the S54 and S65 are two of the best engines BMW ever produced, and I'm just fine with that. I think an S65 will go nicely with the S63. [emoji16]
And to be honest, the DCT was initially for her, but I want it too. Call it a sissy transmission, I'm ok with that. It still shifts faster than any clutched car.
If I had to deviate from my unicorn, I'd get the same car with a manual transmission. But for now, that isn't an option.

Yeah, my friend is looking at them and that M235i now...heard a lot of horror stories with BMW being real flaky despite the rising number of incidents. Met a guy with an '09 out at RRT who was in to have the engine pulled and $10k leave his wallet...
I LOVE the S65 and 4 door E9x M3 so I'm in full support of the hunt for the unicorn and definitely agree finding one with the warranty remaining will be key. Problem is...the usual "be patient" mantra of the unicorn search is against you in this case.

Thanks buddy... I know I'm looking for the smallest needle in a huge ass haystack, but I appreciate any and all leads...
On a side note, this could possibly be the last E90 M3 sedan ever produced. Production date is 10/28/2011. Production was ended in 10/2011. Not only that, but this car is ideal. Not the desired colors, but I would be completely happy with this combo, and the black/red/black interior is fairly rare. Something I could most likely trade out if I chose...

That car is pretty unique. The interior was most definitely treated by BMW Individual; that isn't a standard interior. It would have been nice if it was the standard Coral Red though!
Overall the car looks like a winner to me.

Good luck with the search Jon…I think that part is half the fun myself. I'm always looking for fun and will let you know if I see something that fits your search criteria. E90 M3…a lot of car considering you're gone half the year! ;)
Let me know if you open up your search to 2009/2010's (I know you don't want an '08/pre-LCI). The ZCP wheels can be purchased new or used quite easily, the 10mm lower stance is really not noticeable, and you said yourself you're not a track guy so the enhanced EDC probably wouldn't mean much to you? I actually think the 220's look better on the sedan…I know many prefer the 359s though.
You heading to the west coast again?

Actually, that interior was a standard offering starting in 2011 for all E9x M3's. They also had a black/palladium silver two-tone combo that looks really sharp too. These interiors are rare on the sedan as 2011 was the 1st year with these interiors and the last year for the E90 M3 sedan.

With the armrests like that? I've seen some "similar" interiors, but the armrests definitely weren't like that... are you sure this isn't customized just a little bit?
I know a guy who has a similar interior, the only difference is the armrests between the two. His was black.

Positive. I built many E90 M3's on BMWUSA over the years. It was as $300 option. If you search around for used 2011 M3's you'd find some others with this interior.

Thanks Jeff, and yes, the hunt is half the fun. Sadly, if I do acquire the unicorn I want, I'll be DONE hunting BMWs. Having an X5///M and this ///M3 in the garage will be enough, a family hauler and a toy. Technically they both work for both duties. :biggrin And yes, the Competition package is pretty much wasted on my driving style, but I want it for the added bit of exclusivity.
As for work, yes, flying into Seattle on Sunday, will be landing at midnight or so. You down to hang out?? :rofl

No worries, you are 100% correct! Again, I love the rarity of the two tone interiors, but I feel like its a bit too broken up. In a perfect world, the full Palladium silver seats are better for me, but I would be just fine with either of these two tone options. I do think the Black/Red clashes with Silverstone though, so I'd prefer that on a white or darker blue car... Thanks again for keeping the info straight!!

If it were a year ago and you were looking, I'm thinking this would have been your 1st choice, no?
No Convenience Package, but it has Competition, Premium, Heated Front Seats & Folding rear (better than the full CWP IMO as you eliminate the headlight washers), DCT, Enhanced Sound, Moonroof, Carbon Leather trim, etc.

Yeah, I still love the Alpine White, its a beautiful color, but, the lack of metallic just leaves me wanting more. I love the metallic, gives the cars a deep gloss when freshly detailed.
As for Comfort Access, I just checked the 2011 Order Guide sheet and it actually shows Comfort Access as part of the Tech Package... So weird. There are also specs for Premium Package 2 and 3, something I still can't decipher. From what I can tell, ZP2 includes the 14-way adjustable seats, but not sure what ZP3 includes over that... All I know is that I want bells and whistles. And lack of comfort access is a deal breaker. I do not want to have to fumble for the fob getting into/out of the car, nor do I want to have to pull it out and stick it in the dash.

you know, jon.... i have long wanted to do this, as a hobby. and i've tried, several times - the problem is, i generally end up having a friend that says "hey, i really want to buy that car!" and i end up giving them a deal that cuts into the 'profit' that i promised my wife i would try to make on it! not ideal. that and i really don't have time to raise a family, work full-time, take care of the house and car(s), RESTORE the house, AND flip cars! i wish i did.
however, if you have the time... i could see it being a hugely fun experience - you get to always be driving something new and different. that's what really attracted me to it - that and the fun of 'the hunt'...

Thanks for the insight Peter. TO be honest, I have the time when I'm home, but I also try to cram my entire social/family/home life into half the time, so I actually get quite busy while I'm home on vacation. Perhaps I'll have to rethink that idea. Either way, if I had the M3 in the garage, I'd finally have the car I've lusted over for quite a few years now...

Right, it's part of both Tech and Convenience. At least that's what all the vehicles show on BMWUSA.com for sale. There's actually several options that come with more than one package. Hmmm, actually this one has the Technology Package it appears, but I still didn't see Comfort Access on the decoder, unless I missed it. Either way it doesn't matter...no metallic paint!
And what happened with the SS/SS one in Bellevue WA - it sold before you noticed it listed?

Is that the one that only shows a standard photo?? VIN ending in like 811 or something?? I just ran that one and I agree, and I could be ok with all black, would be a complete twin to the x5 at that point. But I couldn't find it on the actual dealer website... Will call them Monday.

Yes, that's the one. There's a link to the dealer website from the BWMUSA.com page (United BMW, Roswell GA), but I actually don't see it listed on the dealer website now that I look there. I don't know how often the BMWUSA site gets updated though - my X5 was still listed there for well over a week after I bought it.
Too many miles on this one (46K) below? Lemans over Palladium, ZCP, DCT, Technology, Premium, & Convenience (rare to find all 3), front heated seats & rear folding seats. Wow…not seeing a moonroof though on the decoder…very few sedans w/o a moonroof. Deal killer!

I found a 2011 with most of what you want purely by accident today. A friend of mine works at CarMax in Hartford, CT and I went to go pick her up for lunch. I saw this in the lot.
It is unfortunate though that it has 50k miles and is Black/Black, but ticks most of the other boxes:

Thanks for the link BP. Unfortunately, black and 6spd are complete deal breakers. I contacted a private seller about a car in Southern CA today, hopefully I'll hear from him and the car is still available.
In other news, up in Alaska now, internet is flaky and slow, so the search has slowed. I did log on this morning and I didn't see anything new on Autotrader. Grateful for any links that any of you might have! Thanks guys...

Jeff- Yeah, its that privately owned car. Surprisingly, it has the least of my desired options, but its Silverstone, so I'm watching it. Of course, I haven't heard back from the owner yet, so who knows...
And yes, I rate each car based a few different things, including the number of desired options each one has. I have an Excel spreadsheet... :biggrin

Mostly just searching online. There's a lot of misguided info on what options are part of what package, so I typically just run the VIN through the decoder. CPO cars are fine, you pay an extra $2-3000 for them but it's ok when you use the warranty.

Jon what's the deal with the speaker grills? Silver rings is individual? Is it a different speaker or just rings? Also what's your opinion on the rod bearing issue? Preventative replacement? I was reading it's less of an issue on the later model cars that they kind of rectified the issue..? Lastly I've seen guys on the M forums send black stone reports as part of PPI...,overkill or no?
JupiterBMW
03-14-2015, 05:52 AM
The silver trimmed speaker grills are part of the enhanced premium sound (S752A Individual Sound). Yes it is a better speaker... Although, I simulated this look on my ZHP, and really like the silver trim rings, regardless of what is behind them.
As for the rod bearings, I believe as long as the car is well looked after and regular service has been done on time, should be a non issue, especially on the late model builds I am searching for. I have kept the issue in mind, but it isn't swaying my buying decision yet. Also, I will most likely CPO certify the car I buy.
As for the Blackstone reports, I think that is just ridiculous on all these cars. Two points on this... First, we all change our oil more than the recommended intervals. Personally, I do every 5k miles. We are nowhere near getting to the end of the service life of the oil. Second, we all burn premium fuel, less contaminants there. So, as long as the oil quantity is kept at the top and it is changed regularly, I don't see any need for it. Secondly, what if a report comes back bad.? What is someone going to do? We're not going to overhaul the engine just based on a report. Granted with the known rod bearing issue of the S65, I suppose it could be something useful, but seriously, if a report came back bad, all I see anyone doing is just a more frequent oil change anyway... Personally, I would do an oil flush and then change... I think that's more useful. Oil analysis is only beneficial when the oil is constantly in use, and not changed... For instance, the main engine oil on our ships is not changed, only purified. So, to monitor purifier and filter performance, we do sample analysis. Otherwise, I think it's pointless.

Yeah I agree, but I'd much rather have the ZCP package than mods at this point. The carbon leather was a $500 add on if you didn't have the premium package, but so was the aluminum. I do think it's the most desirable trim though, at least not including the individual options.

Looked at a solid contender yesterday. The car was almost perfect, but it had full black leather, not my first choice. Also, being in the opposite corner of the country, it'll cost me close to $2000 to ship it. So, trying to investigate a couple of other options, and waiting to see what else pops up. Picture of the Seattle car below... Notice the liquid sunshine, made the test drive a little less fun, but still an amazing car. And I can now officially say I am completely fine not having a 3rd pedal. I fell in love with the DCT.

Strictly speaking of BMW's here...
The thing is that manuals are better in performance and fuel economy when compared to older automatic transmissions. With the current generation of 8-speed autos that BMW has, the autos are better in every way (except fun). The DCT blows manuals and automatics out of the water entirely.
The only reason to keep a manual nowadays when we're talking about modern cars is for the "fun" factor. Otherwise, it makes no logical sense to have a manual nowadays when compared to the sport auto's and DCT's of today's market. Ultimately, a lot of us will ignore that anyway because three pedals is too fun to pass up!
Just my 2 cents.
Meh to dct. 3 pedals or bust.

While I have no axe to grind with anyone who prefers an auto, one BIG reason to stick with a manual over an exotic gearbox like the DCT or DSG from VW is cost. NFW I'd own either outside of warranty. Manual box? Put a clutch in it at about 150k-200k miles, change the fluid at regular intervals, and it will last forever.

That's actually a really good point I forgot about, so I did a little more research. While there is nothing conclusive, I did come across a very good discussion on the DCT maintenance and longevity in this thread here:
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=307021
I also did another search for high-mileage DCT-equipped cars and found a thread where people have mileages of upwards of 114k (and in one case 160k) with zero issues with their DCT transmissions. I only looked on the first page since I didn't feel like reading over 5 pages worth, but that thread is here if anyone is interested:
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=894069
EDIT: Turns out the second one is only 5 pages so I actually read through it.
2 issues were reported; one wouldn't engage Park and the other had an issue with the clutches where the whole transmission was replaced.
There were a few people (I can count on one hand) with DCT oil pan leaks, but I don't consider that a problem with the transmission.
There was one person who was getting a light, but they found nothing wrong at the dealer and was told it was an electrical glitch.

An hour is close? Damn dude, you're awesome. I already feel bad, Stu looked at a car in Maryland for me that was 45 min-1 hr away from him...
I tried calling the dealer, but no answer (or voicemail...?!?) so I will try again before you spend your time and gas getting there. Also, awaiting another call back from a dealer in Georgia...
Until this morning, I only had the two Lemans Blue cars to decide between, but some early morning searching turned up two more cars, both Silverstone, both fit the majority of the specs...
So close to having a car, yet so far away. :biggrin
Dude, driving an hour each way for me is nothing. I used to drive 33-35k a year, remember? :biggrin
If you do indeed get a hold of the seller and make arrangements, I would prefer it if was around noontime. Traffic going to and from the city in the morning is killer, so if I was to arrive around the noon timeframe, I avoid traffic going to and probably coming back entirely. :thumbsup

That sounds awesome BP... I will try them again soon. For reference, here is the link to the car so you can get directions and whatnot...

**EDIT** I just spoke to them... Not going to lie, it sounds like a Mom & Pop kind of dealer, not really expecting the best. However, the guy seemed pretty nice, said the car was in their showroom and that you could go by and look at it and drive it anytime. I also asked about you taking photos, he said no problem (the pics online suck)...
I'll shoot you a call at some point and we'll chat more. Appreciate it buddy. :)

No problem, man. My only concern about it would be that it's in Queens. City cars usually live somewhat abused lives. You cannot walk down a street in the New York City and not see bumpers without at least a few scratches on them. Hopefully this is an "upstate" car that was traded in or something. It doesn't look bad from the pictures at least.
Warranty cutoff is awfully close; if this is a later production car then it should still have a few months left on warranty.
I'll wait for your call before I call them to set up an appointment.

Spoke to the dealer again this morning BP. I told them you wanted to come around noon tomorrow, he said no problem, car will be in the showroom, they're there from 10-7pm. I did insist that they let you drive it, so that shouldn't be a problem. If they give any feedback, you can tell them that I won't be calling them about purchase unless you can drive it. I know your inspection will be miles better than any multi-point BS they can offer.
And once again, thanks to you for helping me out. [emoji106]

Actually I posted too early... I apologize. But, after visiting my dealer, we can scratch this. The car had the engine replaced around 21k miles. So it's obviously not been cared for properly, or it's been beat on. Either way, I'm no longer interested.

21K miles seems premature, even with severe beating. i wonder what the story is.

Car started life in Texas, then was located in Arizona for the rest of its life. It went to auction in Nevada, and apparently the lot in NY bought it from there. It showed a cylinder head issue at around 9K miles, and then the connecting rod failure at 22K or so... Too many issues for me to want to get involved.

Just out of curiosity, is it a crate motor that got put in? Meaning, it really has less than 20k on the motor? That isn't such a bad thing, but I hear ha. My OCD would be bouncing off the walls too.

Anxiously awaiting to see the winner...
See it? Heck, you've already ridden in it... :biggrin
So, the winner is the car in WA. I spent all day yesterday trying to negotiate the car in Maryland but I didn't have good vibes from the dealer at all. We spoke on the phone quite a bit in the morning and I mentioned wanting the car for $2-3K less than asking due to the mechanical imperfections and the fact that it was a sight unseen purchase. They said the only wiggle room was $500. So, I left it alone, and then texted him later and explained market value for a less than prime car, with fewer options than others (the only thing it didn't have was sunroof and premium sound). I told him what my final offer was. This was done via text message. No reply right away.
By this time it was later in the day, and I figured it can't hurt to make the same offer on the WA car, even though he'll probably say no way (I knew his loan payoff was pretty close to his asking price). I sent him an email (private seller) and explained how I arrived at my offer. Within 30 minutes, he had replied with a really nice email back, accepting! :roundel
We discussed a few details on the phone and he said to me that his break even bottom line was $500 more than what I offered, but when he got my offer, he thought to himself how I would incur extra expense transporting the car to FL, and decided to accept the offer as is so help me out a bit. Who actually does that?!?!?! This guy is such a nice guy, I actually wish he still had a BMW so I could invite him to the Mafia! This of course is also after we (Jeff, Steve, and I) met him the other day, and we all agreed he seemed like a very forthcoming, honest person. So, I feel very good with this car, even if it is out of warranty.
Anyway, the car... Its a 2011 M3 sedan, Lemans Blue over Black Novilio Leather with carbon leather trim. The car has Premium 2, Convenience, Competition, and Cold Weather packages. Some standalone options include the sunroof, premium sound, phone snap in adapter, and satellite radio. The car has 43k miles, but I swear, it is showroom fresh. We couldn't find a single mark on it, not one curb mark on the wheels... :wub Completely bone stock for now, and he even included the BMW roof rack with bicycle adapter for free!
I'm super excited to get her to Florida, where I will post more pics! Here's the one pic I snapped when we looked at the car.

Hah! Yes, already tinted, although I want to check the manufacturer, and if its not a high level for heat reflection, I'll probably have it removed and redone. That's way down the road though. So we'll see...

Agreed Jon, Olen is the exact sort of seller we all look for when buying privately. He was a stand-up, honest guy, and it doesn't surprise me to hear he went below his bottom line to help you out a bit.
BTW, I read the next day that the rainfall that day of the test drive was the 2nd wettest day on record in March since they've been keeping rain records up here in Seattle, 100+ years or so. Which is strange because I believe we've also set a record for the overall driest winter on record. Bad timing, but you'll have plenty of opportunity to let it rip once you take possession.
Congratulations again, I think you made the right choice between the two.

Thanks again Jeff. I agree, such a super nice guy. I actually just spoke to him again... After a GRUELING 5-6 hours on the phone with banks today, I was unable to get the funds wired. According to them, I didn't answer a security question right, and they were unwilling to wire the funds after that. I fought so much and tried so hard to make it happen (even raced to the closest office to provide physical ID only to get there 15 minutes before closing time and find the doors locked... Friday afternoon) that they finally submitted my wire for immediate transfer Monday morning... And the guy I spoke to last felt so bad about how horrible the customer service experience was, he threw $50 into my account for me. And that was just with my bank. Then I had to deal with the other bank for the loan... They screwed up too... So, no money was moved.. Anyway, called Olen to update him and he was completely understanding, said not to worry at all.
As for the rain, its funny you mention that. They always say that its good luck to get rain on your wedding day. And well, I'm basically married to this car (I had to sell my soul to my wife for her to let me buy it:rofl) so, hopefully the extremely rainy test drive will mean good luck during ownership! :biggrin
