I got the CF side vents today. They look like new, no nicks or scratches! What a great eBay deal. [emoji2]

Just have to order some M3 emblems for them.

It finally cooled down today to 91 inside my garage to install the side vents. I ordered some new emblems but they didn't arrive yet. One thing about CF is taking decent photos is challenging.

I got the new M3 emblems for the CF side vents today. I wanted monochrome emblems but couldn't find any. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. They are very close to the OE emblems without the price. I paid $7 shipped for these and OE emblems are around $80!

Installed some WeissLicht Tinted LED Side Markers. My stock ones were faded and wanted some tinted ones.

I just swapped out my rectangle "SOS" mirror with the M3 Oval Mirror repaired at Radar Mirror.
I swapped #7 to #2 on the plug for the car and cut 4,5,6 and everything works great!

If it was autodim, I'd say yes...

Most oval autodim rear view mirrors have the clown nose... you don't see too many rear view oval autodim mirrors...

Personally.... the clown nose on the oval autodim rear view doesn't bother me too much...Gary's ///M is starting to look more like a "proper ///M" now with the right rear view mirror installed ;) :thumbsup

The one thing I noticed about the Oval mirror compared to the last two is the clown nose is half the size of the other two. It's barely is visible from the outside of the car.

Yes - it's there but not usable for anything other than the LED inside of it. I like the reduced profile of it as well.

Cool mirror mod!

that is on my to-do-list as mine is no longer auto dimming, and I find the ZHP mirror not the greatest. I was thinking of going with a wide angle potentially. I had one in my BRZ. While the mirror was great, it didn't change the view out the rear window or change the size of that cars blind spots which are HUGE.

How are the LED side markers working out? Once my sound system is installed, I want to address interior lighting, side markers, and tail lights. I already bought used headlights which I am going to put new lenses and weather seals on, so the car will look fresh. I was thinking LEDs for everything behind the headlights

WOLFN8TR

Thanks guys. Ya I'm a bit OCD so it's always nice and organized!

My old rectangular rear view mirror auto dimming quit working. I was going to send it to Radar Mirror and get it repaired but I broke it before sending it off. Don't ask. The new Oval mirror looks and functions so much better so it worked out great in the end.

The Bimmian LED turn signals work great. The tinted ones also match better. I also have interior LED's which was a nice improvement in lighting.

After talking with Charlie we think the issue might be the fact we swapped them left to right and right to left which turned them upside down for a better light pattern. I wouldn't think LED's would burn hot enough to be an issue thou.

As far as badgering them about the warranty, we cut the mounting brackets and grinder the tabs off the lights themselves to get them to fit properly. Sooooo......

Turning them upside should have no effect on their longevity... they're passively cooled, aren't they?
Regardless, sounds like terrible quality control to me. I only know of three sets to be in use by people that I know, and every single one of them has failed. :(

Yes they are passively cooled. I wouldn't think that would of caused them to go bad especially after only using 15 times or so. At $150 per set I don't think I will take a chance and buy another set of these.

The passive cooling isn't the issue - it's probably just the choice of components. The OE X5 fogs I have worked absolutely perfectly, and those were also passively cooled. I only brought it up because you mentioned the orientation of the lights. Being upside down shouldn't really affect the termal performance of it to any noticeable degree, I was just mainly curious about cooling method.

E46 fogs are not monitored by the CANBUS system, so no need to code out hot/cold checks or worry about resistors.

Those are the ones I have. Those are awesome!
I'm surprised they still have them at that price...

You will have to do some heatsink grinding and fog light housing shaving to get them to fit, so be prepared for some modding. Stuart helped me (did most of the work lol) retrofit them into my housings - perhaps he can give you more info if you need it.

Update: I was having radio issues in my M3, my radio would change inputs automatically and the volume would go up really loud for a few seconds. After researching the possible problem I narrowed it down to faulty amps in the BM53 unit. There is a company in London that upgrades the BM53 to a digital 50 watt amp. The cost is approx $200 and about a week or so of waiting for the unit to arrive repaired. http://www.carphonics.co.uk

I found a guy over on the M3 Forum who advertises he does the amp upgrades. I reached out to Serg and inquired about it. He told me he installs a new amp and cooling fan for $180 shipped back to me. So I decided to go that route. BIG MISTAKE! I sent my BM53 to Serg on September 26th and received it back on the 28th of October, exactly one month later! I drove my M3 for 30 days with NO radio! Not only did it take a month to get my unit back but it didn't work properly once I installed it. Serg did not even test it before sending it to me. I was told twice he was testing it rigorously before shipping it. Once I got the unit installed the cooling fan wouldn't shut off. I heard a constant buzzing in the speakers with the ignition turned off. The speakers would pop when the doors were opened. Serg told me to remove the cooling fan. After opening the unit I found one of the leads for the fan came off the circuit board. I removed the fan completely. When I turned the key to position one the speakers would pop really loud and the radio was off. This still didn't fix the problem and the next morning my battery was completely dead reading 11.5v. The next day Serg had me remove the two terminal bridges on the new amp board, this fixed the problem and the stereo sounded good. But the new problem was my phone didn't work properly anymore. I could make and receive a call, they could hear me but I couldn't hear them. Serg agreed to send me his BM53 modified unit out of his M3 which he said worked great. I received his unit on November 14th. It appeared he removed the cooling fan and RCA's from his BM53 before sending it. There was a huge hole in the top cover and 4 small holes in the side. When I installed it I got no sound out of any of the speakers except for the front left speaker. There was no volume control and my cell phone still wouldn't work properly. Serg didn't test that unit either before sending it. When removing the fan and RCA's he knocked off one of the soldered leads going to the amp board. I PM'd Serg about these issues and got NO response.

I bought another TCU module off eBay- $200. The TCU still didn't fix the cell phone issue. I bought another unmodified BM53 off eBay- $200. The BM53 unit fixed the cell phone issue. The BM53 unit Serg repaired is the reason my cell phone no longer works in my M3. I just shipped his BM53 back to him on Friday the 25th of November. Exactly two months later my radio and cell phone are working again in my M3.

Well I did notice a difference. The 4x50 amp he used is $20 on eBay. The digital 4x50 amp upgrade is approx $100. Once upgrading the amp the stock speakers should be upgraded as well. But in the end it wasn't worth the hassle I went thru. I should of just bought another stock BM53 and be done. Oh well.

I sent Serg a PM lastnight with a tracking number for his BM53 I sent back to him. He replied right away saying how sorry he was and he would send me another stock BM53 unit and pay me for all shipping costs. I thought it was strange how all of a sudden he replied and wanted to make it right. This is why. I read a thread over on the M3 Forum that Serg got rear ended in his M3 and they are totaling it. So I decided to delete all of the info, in retrospect my radio issue is minor compared to what Serg is going thru.

Had to buy another battery today, the current Durmast 94R-DLG is just over 8 years old and getting weak. I had bought a new battery back in 2013 for my ZHP and he thought it was that battery and gave me a $85 credit towards the new battery. SCORE!
The batteries went up in price and the warranty went down.

The ZHP battery was $165 and 5 year free replacement warranty and the M3 battery was $185 and 3 year free replacement warranty. :facepalm

Ya that's what I thought! I was happy to hear I had a credit on the old battery. The issue out here in the desert is it goes from 115 in the summer to 25-30 in the winter during the mornings. Very hard on batteries.

And that's why you haven't had to replace a battery - you haven't had 'em long enough! lol
These cars seem pretty sensitive to batteries over 3-4 years old, in my experience. I've replaced my battery 2 or 3 times since I've owned my car, which has only been 6 years. :(

Not necessarily... I mean an 8-12 yr old BMW or battery is a 8-12 yr old BMW or battery, doesn't matter if I have been the owner for 10 min or 10 years. My point was even of all the cars I've owned I've somehow managed to be lucky enough to skip that part of maintenance. Even my fucked up E46 M3's battery was was on the few issues I wasn't required to remedy to get it into proper condition.

One of LED fog lights went dim on the right. I ordered another set beings they were on sale. So I decided to see if I could get the bad one apart and see what was wrong with it. It took about an hour of prying it apart and I was shocked to find the CHEAPEST LED setup living inside these lights!! Needless to say I will be returning the new set. I have a set of X5 OE LED fog lights I'm going to retrofit into these housing. Well that's the plan anyway. :shift

It actually isn't a lot of work to get the fog enclosure itself prepped. If I remember correctly, most of the work was trimming the heat sink of the X5 portion. The fog housing just required a little bit of dremeling. I think there were two raised sections that had to be ground down. Stuart would know better as he did most of the work on mine.

Um Ya. If I didn't already have a set of OE X5 LED Fog Lights I probably wouldn't of attempted this project. But I'm pretty determined to get this to work. I just went to Lowes and bought a bulk back if Dremel cutting disks. It's not hard cutting the raised area, just very time consuming. If you go to fast the disks break and they are $10 for 5 of them.

BP I'm fitting these into the X5 EL CHEAPO LED Fog Lights I bought from IJDM that supposedly had the OE X5 fog lights already inside the metal housing. But if you look at the photos above you can see they weren't.

I have these. They are all aluminum housing, hence the grinding down the raised area to get the OE ones to fit. Way more work than I anticipated. If all goes as planned I will get these installed. Off to the garage to cut the heat sink fins down, wish me luck!

I put the fog light retrofit aside for now and started another project.

I decide to get ride of the Mechanical Fan and go Electric. I did this mod on my Auto ZHP which was pretty easy, just had to remove the Mechanical Fan and install a Electric Fan from a 6MT ZHP. On the M3 it's not that easy plus you are dealing with higher cooling needs.

Most go with the Mishimoto fan kit rated at 1950 CFM's or the Spal 16" fan with a CFM rating of 2040. The Mishimoto fan comes with a fan mounting bracket but you cannot use the stock fan shroud. The Spal fan doesn't and a bracket or mounting solution has to be fabricated and the stock fan shroud cannot be used as well. There's approx 4" of clearance from the radiator to the water pump shaft. So the fan has to be offset mounted to clear the water pump housing. If center mounted the water pump threads on the shaft has to be cut off.

Beings I live in the hot ass desert I need the highest CFM fan possible. I found a Derale 17" two speed Electric Fan, low is 1800 and high is 2400 CFM's. The plan is to mount it inside the stock fan shroud. This fan is only 2 1/2" wide and should clear the water pump shaft.

I'm going to go with a Auto Cool PWM 50 Fan Control. This has an adjustable Tstat and ramps up the fan from 0-100% based on the engine coolant temps. It has an AC control, override switch, cool down mode and internal 50 amp resettable circuit breaker.
By keeping the radiator temperature below the engine temperature, it keeps the engine temperature rock solid. The Auto Cool controllers sense the temperature at the outflow port of your radiator.

For your situation John I would leave the Electric Fan inside the engine compartment we installed, it flows a decent amount of air. I believe that setup is fine. It's more plug and play than this setup I'm going with. I ran that up here in the hot desert for two years on my ZHP with no issues. I monitored the coolant temps daily with my UltraGauge.

Ok so the Electric Fan mod went south. The fan was too heavy to be mounted inside the stock fan shroud. And I noticed after cutting up my shroud and spending hours trying to get it to work that it's not a "sealed" fan! I don't know how I over looked that part, oh well. I had to buy another stock fan shroud on eBay for $60. Not all mods go as planned. I found a sealed fan that should work and it will be mounted in the stock shroud. Attempt number 2 commencing this weekend!

On a side not I stumbled across a OE CSL Silver Grey Boot Lid for sale on E46Fanatics in Tennessee but he didn't want to ship it. I posted a thread on here asking the Mafia for help and 3 members offered to go get it for me! Bimmerwill, Badclown and 3ZHPGUY. Guy was closer than Will and Jacob so he picked it up today! I'm amazed how cool the members on here are, many thanks to Guy for doing this for me. He is even going to make a crate out of wood so it's nice and safe and ship it to me. I've wanted a CSL Boot Lid since buying my M3 and held out for an OE one (Charlie's recommendation) and found one already painted A08 for the same price as a new unpainted one. Can't wait to get it installed!

Ha Ha!! I had to order a plug and some wire terminals for the license plate wiring. My OCD will not let me just splice it in unfortunately.

Plus I need to get my electrical fan setup running before it gets too hot here. I mounted the electric fan inside the stock fan shroud last weekend and just wired up a PWM Controller. The PWM controller acts just like the stock Aux Fan controller does. It ramps up the fan speed depending on the demand. Soft start technology is easier on the DC fan and the alternator.

Auto Cool Guy
http://www.autocoolguy.com

With power transistors, no contacts to arc and burn out over time.
PWM also limits in-rush current (soft start) when starting motors from a dead stop.
Relays used for starting DC fan motors is not a good idea.
Relays used to start DC fan motors from a dead stop will have arcing that limits the life of the relay.
The relay contacts could be welded together that will put your fans in high RPM and drain your battery!
The relay contacts could be destroyed leaving you without radiator fan control and engine boiling!

Well not completely but the owner of the company says it's completely ok to install these inside the engine bay. I was concerned about this and emailed him with several questions about where to mount it. He said bus companies mount them inside the engine bay with no issues. I might build a cover for it out of a ABS plastic sheet.

These controllers are completely water proof. You can actually submerge them in water and they will still work. I found these after I bought the other one.

Thanks everyone and Thank you Guy for everything you did for me!

Decided to wash and wax the car today. It was a nice sunny day with not a cloud in the sky. I was taking a few pictures of the car out front when it started to head my way. You can see it in the distance in some of the photos. I pulled the car into the garage and the storm hit hard. It turned black as night, rained, hailed and got super windy!

That's why I ended up selling mine... the OE 18 inch has the lip but does not look as good as the OE 19 inch that comes with the M3.

19s definitely look better. My dad eventually went from 19s to 18s on his m3 after destroying his ssr gt3's beyond fixing. He had them repaired 3 times I believe and the 4th the guy said he couldn't do it anymore. They sit in the basement now. Sad.

I mounted the electric fan inside the stock fan shroud last weekend and just wired up a PWM Controller. The PWM controller acts just like the stock Aux Fan controller does. It ramps up the fan speed depending on the demand. Soft start technology is easier on the DC fan and the alternator.

Installed a set of ECSTUNING silicone radiator hoses and Mishimoto temp probe adaptor. The AutoCoolGuy PWM control works great! You basically set it where you want the engine temp to be and it controls the fan as needed. You can hear it slowly ramp up and down.

Also I was the first person to test out his "Buzz Box". Some electric fans buzz when using a PWM control, the Mishimoto does. He offered me a free one if I posted before and after videos of it working. There's two videos on his website of my M3 with it working. Kinda cool.

The relay contacts could be welded together, that will put your fans in high RPM and drain your battery!
The relay contacts could be destroyed leaving you without a radiator fan control and engine boiling!

Offset the fan inside the shroud to clear the water pump shaft.
