awesome. :)

i've been doing some research and it looks like the only thing i need to do is fab up a mounting bracket for the end of the lap belt. VAC motorsports makes a set but they are $55 shipped, and i'm sure i can make a set for 1/4 of that... either that or swap the outer rails, which seems kinda messy. the bracket is a 2-bolt affair.

Mine's shrinked a whole lot since I bought the car.

- Cooling system, rear brakes and ebrake due in 20k
- Recharge freon
- Replace cats (have a set already) + driveshaft wearables
- Paint.

What I've done in the last 2.5 years I won't list though. Too long. :biggrin

Unfortunately yes it will be expensive. When I was shopping for the E36 M3, 1 or 2 people told me it would be a good deal if I bought a well-sorted track car for $20,000 or $25,000 instead of building my own. Now I've spent almost as much on modifying/updating the E36 as I spent to buy it and the forum prediction is starting to ring true, especially if one of those prepared race cars had good racing coilovers ($2000-$4000) and stripped interior with a full roll cage ($2000-$5000?). However I needed a car that was still streetable for at least the next few years.

Fortunately both cars have refreshed cooling systems now and are trackable, so I can proceed in stages. For the E46 the oil pump and pan upgrades can wait for quite a while as long as the current leak doesn't worsen. In fact if I'm not going to track it much/any more, I don't need the oil pan baffle or oil pump upgrade, but since the oil pan has to come off eventually for a new gasket, I'm tempted to do those upgrades anyway "while I'm in there."

For the E36 the only urgent item is replacing the wheel studs, and I already bought those (and stainless steel brake lines) from BYS/Smilez. All the other handling goodies are "nice to have" but not urgent: swaybar, sunroof delete, stiffer/solid FCABs, coilovers, exhaust, manifold, tune, LSD upgrade, etc. The rollbar + harnesses + fixed seats is the one item that could be urgent--it's one of those things that's only urgent if you crash hard or roll the car, but you have to make the investment before the crash happens.

dang. i can paraphrase that for ya:

List is pretty short at the moment . . .

-Most of an Inspection II

Future stuff:
-Complete cooling system overhaul (probably save this for the spring)
-Eurocharge?

gammagoblin
12-18-2014, 06:12 PM
Pretty short. Finished my important to-do stuff this year including suspension and cooling system:

Simple stuff
* need a wash/wax pretty bad, esp before winter and salt
* oil + filter change coming up, Jan/Feb

Fun stuff
* Eurocharge tune
* LSD - one of those some day things
* BMW perf intake would be nice but too expensive for me. Have no other desire for other performance mods
* Pilot SS when I need shoes, maybe next year. Overall have not liked my DW's that much.
* Dedicated 17" set of snow tires. I run summers all year and just try not to die (or stay in) in the snow, which is not that often anyway (NYC)

Other little stuff
* 2 dents since I bought want to get popped out, annoys my OCD
* along that note damn center console trim doesn't sit flush
* need to fix some seat "squeakyness" - my OCD is tingling even now!
* seatbelts in front slow to retract, kinda have to feed them

Now that I wrote that all out it's not that short

Oh! and airbag recall for sure. I've not gotten an official letter yet and I'm waiting for the front + passenger situation to be resolved. I have no relationship with any NY area dealer and assume they're a bunch of scum like everyone else around here, so I will wait for official notice so I don't have any BS to deal with.

lol at this thread...

1. Build 2.0L 11:1 LH-jet M10 for E21 and install. Need to move battery to trunk at same time to clear E30 airbox. Not sure if I want to use the TEP brace/battery box or just do something like the E28 setup. Contact Miller to get custom chip made so I don't have a Volvo 6k redline

2. Replace brake master/slave on E21. Might need booster rebuit as well

3. Install 323 rear trailing arms/disc conversion on E21. Install rear Koni Specials at the same time

4. Get M3 mirror wiring from my buddy who is parting one out, install in blue E46

5. Full cool pack for blue E46

6. CCV for blue E46. Possibly change starter at same time

7. Replace all 6 pieces of Shadowline on both E46s

8. Find two more rear style 68s, then install 17s so I can put my 18s in storage

9. Find and buy 97/98 Z3 2.8, keep engine/trans/front subframe/suspension for eventual E21 use. Part out rest of car

10. Find OBD1 M52 E36 325/E34 525, get ECU and exhaust manifold for eventual E21 use

11. Finish stripping the 02, do bodywork, and paint it Tampico

12. Build engine for the 02, install

13. Start working on the NK 2000CS, figure out what needs to be done

14. Win the lotto so I can pay for all this

15. ???

Depends on if you go for Pilkington glass or "not Pilkington" glass.

The one I have currently installed is "non". I think it was $285 installed.

Pilkington would be close to $400 if not more.

^that sounds about right. I think the shop in Fredericksburg that used Pilkington was about $250 Vas. I used Auto Glass Now 540-710-7101. Let me know if you get a quote as I need new glass too--really badly pitted.

Replaced VCG on ZHP last night. Not difficult, just time consuming to clean the mounting surfaces on the head, especially removing old RTV. Could not see any leaks from VCG beforehand but I saw oil dripping from below from back right (passenger side) corner of head, falling on post-cat O2 sensor cables then dripping onto exhaust. After removing VC there was evidence of leaking on the right/downhill side. Left ZHP home today to let RTV cure longer.

I finished three items on my E36 list: Replace old wheelstuds with new ones; Replace cabin air filter; Replace door lock actuator.

But two new items popped up. ZHP valve cover gasket is leaking again (after 4 years) and E36 is showing SRS light--need the diagnostic tool.

What was your method of cleaning the mounting surface?

Old method: scrape or peel off old RTV, wipe mounting surface and spray a tiny bit of brake cleaner, finish by wiping with a paper towel. Not sure if I cleaned the cover grooves (where the gaskets sit) well.
New method: scrape or peel off old RTV, wipe with some brake cleaner, then flush whole surface from high to low with more brake cleaner. Then wipe grooves in cover with paper towels then hold valve cover vertically above a drain pan and flush all grooves with brake cleaner.

Also last two times (2 times with same gasket set) I tightened each nut to about 89 inch-lbs. This time I tightened each one until it gently bottomed out, not sure what torque but more than 89 inch-lbs, probably about 120 inch-lbs? Don't know if using more torque will be better (more clamping force) or worse (deforms gasket too much).

Looking at my records the previous VCG was first installed March 2010, then same gasket reinstalled Nov 2010 when I rebuilt the VANOS seals. Re-using the gasket might have contributed to the failure, but it did last 4 years and 50,000 miles from its 2nd installation before leaking. That's exactly as long as a new BMW warranty period!

Just had mine done this weekend with Pilkington for $350 out the door. Wasn't quite the cheapest in the area, but I trusted the place, so it was worth paying a few bucks more.

Yes, because I put it there last time in 4 locations: 2 half moon cutouts in front, 2 half moon cutouts in back, and the two seams in front where VANOS unit bolts to the head. (Or maybe the seams are where the timing cover bolts to the head, don't remember.) The RTV I used seemed to stick better to the metal head than to the rubber gasket, though I did not inspect the old gasket closely for bits of old RTV.

The reason I didn't suspect VCG at first is there were no obvious signs of leaking that I could easily see or feel in the front or "uphill" side of the gasket. It seems it was leaking mostly in the back. Not sure if it's because the gasket was getting old (it was stiff but not fully plasticized), re-used gasket once, or I used cheap RTV, didn't use enough RTV, didn't tighten the nuts enough, etc.

Was there any RTV on the top of the engine (head?) that you needed to remove?

My current list; first three or four get tackled this weekend:

Rear pads/rotors on wife's E70 (33k miles and it needs rear brakes, WTF woman?)
Thermostat on E53 (Wahler), fit E30 rad cap (Meyle) and brass bleeder screw, inspect expansion tank
Cabin filter on E46 (charcoal one)
Injector flush on E46 (using my new BG VIA injector widget and BG injector goop)
Cold weather dipstick on E53, probably do the CCV and hoses too.
Brake hoses on E53, R side is nicked, prob should have been replaced during the brake line clip recall/campaign
Investigate and replace the slow-to-unlock-when-it's-below-freezing R side door actuator on E53
Fit new radio ribbon cable on E53 (dead pixels), order and fit the interior LED kit from eBay dude recommened here 1TEK??
Order and fit strut tower reinforcement plates on E46; get quote to hydrodip the strut bar center section (carbon fiber pattern)
Remove intake and injectors from kids A4; decoke/de-carbon the intake ports, valves, guides and tumble flaps with BG ISC (cleaner).

It never ends.

Truth. But somehow, I don't mind.

For me (none are immediate):

Isolate source of door rattle and fix, both driver's side and passenger side. Most likely loose door clips. Plan to order door clips with foam padding.
Isolate rear intermittent rattle. Might be rear deck, in which case go for the tennis ball mod.
Purchase APEX ARC-8 17x8.5" ET40 Hyper Black wheels, wrap in 245/40R17 Continental DW tires, mount and balance.
Locate, purchase, and swap E46 M3 front seats w/ heat, lumbar, bolster electronic adjustment
Replace engine and transmission mounts with OEM M3 mounts.
Repair or replace the driver's side tail light due to an LED having reduced output.
Clean and paint the brake calipers on the next brake fluid flush.
Detail the car (sorely needs it).

To do:

2002 M3: Make it run under it's own power, pass salvage inspection, get tags and avoid traffic infractions.

2003 330ci ZSP: Prep for the Silver State Classic, don't blow it up or ball it up in Nevada. Needs some suspension help, and some go fast goodies.

2006 330ci ZHP: Cosmetic issues: some paintless dent removal, new bumper cover, suspension and cooling refresh.

Just thinking about this list makes my wallet hurt, but here it goes...

-New front bumper, badly needed (CF splitters would also be nice)
-Respray rear bumper
-Replace passenger side xenon module (light is out)
-PDR and a really good detail
-Steering wheel wrap from Coby
-Fix my handbrake which barely works
-Flush the brake fluid
-Figure out why I still have break shimmy after new front/rear rotors, FCABs and a front right control arm
-Fix/replace the cracked window molding
-Repaint my shadowline trim which is faded
-Headers and a tune (hopefully).
-Refinish style 135s or get CSL reps
-Spacers (if I keep the 135s)

Add that to the fact that I just had new VANOS seals, expansion tank, waterpump, thermostat, FCAB, battery, intake boot, spark plugs, VCG and a laundry list of other things and I probably could have bought an M3 by now lol. At least when I'm done I'll know I'm set for awhile on maintenance. Comes with the territory of owning a high mileage ZHP I guess!

The strut reinforcement plates are cheap and super easy to do. You should definitely do them for the peace of mind alone.

....-> Source OEM Euro rear M3 cross-drilled rotors
....-> Source rear extended stainless steel brake lines

2) Paint my CSL bootlid for sedan in Imola Red

3) Get new set of rear Toyo Proxes T1 Sport rear tires for my BBS CH wheels

4) Refresh pulleys and tensioners

5) Change fluids (engine/tranny/diff) - before 2016Mafia Reunion

While tightening one of my sway bar links I noticed I have a huge oil leak that wasn't there two months ago. I'm guessing its the OFHG so I'll do that with the CCV in the coming weeks. Also have to do my rear subframe bushing but my mechanic has been taking his sweet time pressing those bushings out. Other than that car is up to date on maintenance. I will be swapping out my cupkit to coils once my tax return comes :D

I'm coming up on 70K in spring, so I'll be doing a big round of preventative maintenance:

-Cooling System Overhaul (waterpump, pulley, tensioner, belts, radiator, expansion tank hoses, tstat
-RTABs
-FCABs
-Rogue RSMs
-Don't know if the previous owner did VANOS seals in the first 40K, but I'll probably do them for good measure just in case
-DISA fix
-Sparkplugs
-Fuel Filter
-Brake fluid flush
-Diff and trans oil flush

And I'll do an inspection of the rest of my bushings to see if anything else needs replaced. I was just under there the other day and everything was looking pretty peachy.

As long as my clutch stays solid, that should hopefully be all the maintenance this thing will need for quite a while :)

Going in on the 29th this month:

- VANOS (Dr. Vanos rebuilt unit)
- VANOS oil line & seals
- DISA valve (Dr. Vanos rebuilt unit)
- Oil filter housing gasket
- Oil change (clearly, lol)
- Adding two more 17x8.5" Style 68's up front for a square set-up
- Alignment (provided the suspension isn't too far gone)

I'm also going to have my shop assess the condition of the radiator, radiator hoses, and expansion tank along with the front & rear suspension. PO told me he replaced the thermostat and water pump recently already.

Between now and then I'm also going to be replacing my center console and the hazard/lock switch since the one side of the retainer trim is broken and a clip on the switch itself is done. Depending on when it gets here, also replacing the CHMSL assembly.
