I didn't know that you have third car. It's nice to have something big to haul things around.
Early May me and my wife went to explore Research Triangle in NC. We had a stop in Alexandria VA, but on the way back drove non stop back to Boston.
I was surprised to see that some traffic on I95 in NJ moves at 85-90 mph. It was a very cool blast and I had a chance to step on the gas for a bit-:)
Which area are you going to travel?

The factory amber lights just provide more contrast on the darker color cars I think. But Mostly I just wanted to switch up the look while keeping the OE theme with the car.

Also I made an appointment next week to have the windows tinted. I always been skeptical about tint but hopefully I won't regret it

If you get light enough, it will be fine. IMO, high heat rejection films are the way to go. It dramatically reduces the heat inside while you are in it. I loved my 40% 3M crystalline tint in my TDI.

I talked to a local tint shop and they recommended Suntek CXP. They also stated that the VA Laws are 50% in the front and 35% rear.

Sad part is there is no local tint places that carry 3m or llumar brand films.

CXP is good! I believe CIR is the equivalent of 3M Crystalline. It is mad expensive though. I think 40% all around would look great and won't attract the cops. Here in California, front 70% is legal up front and no restriction in the rear.

Picked up the car yesterday from the tint shop. The installer mentioned that the car had tint at some point before in its life so he removed some old film and took his time with the install of the new film. And you can tell it is a good quality job.

As far as the actual look of the car, the 35% make the whole car look uniform now. I will try to take some pictures and share them.

When I was doing the oil pan gasket, there was visible surface cracks on the guibo. It is a huge chunk of rubber that dries out over time and cracks.

Secondly the car started to develop a driveline vibration that can be felt in 1st and 2nd gear around 2500-3000 rpm when accelerating. The vibration to me feels like it is coming from the middle of the car which is where the csb is located. At least that is my guess.

The design of the csb also incorporates rubber which is most likely is dry and cracked as well. However I can't verify this until the exhaust is removed and some of the heat shields. But if you are installing an exhaust, this is the perfect time to look at these parts.

I just didn't want to remove it, see what's wrong, put it back together and then do it all over again.

My only concern is the u-joints that can't be serviced on the driveshaft. If those go bad, the only solution is a new driveshaft since they can't be serviced.

This is making me consider purchasing a guibo and CSB just because I'll be in there for my UUC exhaust...ugh.

Man I didn't really want to remove it. Mostly because of the nuts that hold the headers to the exhaust. I knew they were going to snap and would require drilling them out.

Also took the vehicle for a drive and the vibration is now gone.

Great Job!

You have got to let us know what the trick is to removing the entire driveshaft without removing the exhaust. I also have an increasingly worsening driveline vibration and am planning to do a transmission filter and fluid service (auto), and replacing the guibo and CSB. My header to exhaust bolts and nuts are also really rusted and would probably have to be cut and drilled out. Not having to remove the exhaust could shave hours off of this job and also save on $$ replacing bolts, nuts, and gaskets. The pictures of your old CSB also makes me terrified that mine looks the same. The drive shaft must have real been flopping around under the car.

For the exhaust, I just removed it from all the hangers and dropped it down enough to be able to remove the heatshield and driveshaft. There was enough flex so I was not worried about cracking any welds.

As far as the csb, it got progressively worse over time. Pretty sure the long road trip I took just made it worse.

I was thinking to take the car to an exhaust shop and have them remove/replace the studs. Would save some time but not sure of the cost of having it done.

Sockethead

To get the header bolts off, you just need to heat the crap out of them until they turn red. They'll come right off.
If one of the studs break, you can press it out with a big C clamp and a socket. Theyre just pressed in. No need to drill out.
You'll get sticker shock if you buy the nuts and bolts from the dealer.., around $50 or so but the nuts are copper infused to help keep them from seizing. Use plenty of anti-seize compound and they'll come right off the next time you need to remove the exhaust system.
I used heat on both my exhaust and San's exhaust when we put my TSE3 on it. The nuts came right off. The threads were rusted off my bolts so I had to replace but San's were still in good shape so we didn't need to replace. We just put it back together with some copper based anti- seize and new gaskets and it was GTG

A propane torch will work but it will take longer. Propane doesn't burn as hot as other gases. You want to get the nut cherry red.

So ECStuning was offering 20% and free shipping over the weekend.

So I placed an order for a Single Mass Flywheel Conversion Kit.

Kit contents:
Single-mass flywheel
Non-Self Adjusting Clutch and pressure plate
Throw out bearing
Pressure plate bolts
Flywheel bolts

Total cost came out to be $389 which is a really good deal considering a dual mass flywheel alone is that cost. Hopefully I do not regret going to a single mass mostly cause some individuals stated there is chatter.

Any suggestions on what else to replace when I pull the transmission ?

$389?! which kit did you buy? even at 20% off, that's a lot cheaper than anticipated. :)

for the valeo 835101 kit - i forgot to mention in my Touring thread, but i weighed all of the kit components versus the stock stuff, and everything actually weights the same amount. maybe 0.5lb variance in the entire kit (40lbs). the flywheel is 25lbs. i doubt chatter will be an issue.

as for other things to replace - the RMS + gasket for sure, as well as the metal pivot pin (will last forever). i would absolutely rebuild the shift linkage if you haven't already (with a few upgraded components in there for longevity and better shift feel: shift fork bushings - use delrin - and the rear shift fork carrier - use poly.... you can get everything from garagistic.com), also driveshaft flex disc and CSB if you haven't already. i'm pretty sure you've done the M3 trans mounts, too?

This is the kit I bought. Pretty sure it is the correct one.

FCP Euro has it for $549 so this was a good bit cheaper.

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-valeo-parts/single-mass-flywheel-conversion-kit/835101~val/

I recently did the CSB and the flex disk ( less then 5k on them ) and the M3 trans mounts have roughly 40k on them.

With the holiday season, I am trying to keep this job cost effective and not go over-board with "while I am in there I might as well replace it"

But RSM would be silly not to replace and pretty sure the plastic pin is worn. And I think I have some shifter rebuild parts stockpiled.

cool... you got the right kit, and what a deal! nice score! :cheers

yes, RMS is silly not to do. and if you've got the shifter rebuild parts already... go for it.

one helpful thing too, is the HF trans jack i have. it wasn't expensive, and makes dropping/raising the trans safe and precise. i also used it to drop/raise the entire rear diff/suspension assembly - it's a fantastic tool.

i don't know. but the stock DMF makes all sorts of noise and develops tons of play as it gets older, which i can't imagine is good for the transmission either.

Pretty sure this is the case with mine. It just sounds terrible.

Also if the gear rattle is significant, I will try using Redline 75w140ns gear oil and D4 Atf to reduce the noise.

I probably went overboard with ordering extra parts but if I do not use them, FCP Euro will take them back.

(1) BMW Crankshaft Seal Kit - Genuine BMW 11141438274
(1) BMW Clutch Alignment Tool - LUK 4000394900
(1) BMW Clutch Fork Pivot - Genuine BMW 21511223281
(1) BMW Clutch Pivot Fork - Genuine BMW 21511223302
(1) BMW Clutch Release Arm Spring - Genuine BMW 21517570284
(2) BMW Exhaust Pipe to Manifold Gasket - Reinz 18107502346

And then this pesky seal that leaks from the shifter.

(1) BMW Shift Rod Seal - Genuine BMW 23117531360

I also have a Shifter Rebuild Kit laying around which is from ECSTuning. Currently using the Euro Shift Level Rod instead of the factory unit to reduce the throws (Same thing as the BMW Performance SSK that was available back in the day)

(1) Shifter Rebuild Kit ES#2594075

I noticed mine has a weird feel to the clutch pedal now. It's kind of like really old cars where the clutch pedals creak and feels like it needs lube, only without the creaking part. It's grabbing pretty darned high now as well, but still works like a champ. Really hoping it lasts 'till 300k... at about 287 right now. :ninja

the X3 came with a set of hankook snows... can't remember the model name now, but they are definitely the 'high-speed' snows, not the gnarly ones. i can confirm this morning that they indeed suck at braking in snow... bad enough that i want to get a set of X-Ice3's for it pronto.

Huh, I’ve never gotten a flat spot on my DW’s, but they definitely lost some performance in sub-40F temps. I just chalked that up to be a summer performance tire. Are there any summer performance tires that don’t lose a moderate to significant amount of grip in those low temps?

I’ve had conti dws 06 and I’ve never had flat spotting too. I remember many folks complaining that dws and continental tires in general are prone to flat spotting but I didn’t notice any even in freezing temps. Maybe they updated the design and stiffened the sidewalls of the dws06 vs dws, but I would imagine they would’ve done the same with the extreme contacts (dw replacement) vs dw...

Last year when I had my Michelin Pilot all seasons, I parked my car Friday after work when it was 55+ degrees. Went into work Monday morning at 6am in sub freezing temps (it was cold the two days before driving) and I had a bad flat spot. I freaked out at first and thought I had a flat tire. Aired up my tires and still noticed the noise when I realized it was just a flat spot.

Good Article from Tirerack about summer tires.

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=273

Cliff Note:

As ambient temperatures get colder, typically in the 40-45° Fahrenheit range, summer performance tires lose a noticeable percentage of traction as their tread compound rubber properties change from a pliable elastic to inflexible plastic

Headlight output is greatly improved but the light bulbs do need to be replaced. You can tell that they are near the end of their lifespan.

As far as the auto show, not a bad event. Some new cars did spark an interest but most of the stuff is marketed towards the general public so no manual cars were present from BMW/Audi.

Biggest thing is car manufactures are moving towards vibrant exterior colors and ambient lighting in the door panels and dashboard. Very present in the new X3 and the new 5 series.

Got it. My lights out on white car recently decreased and I am thinking that it can be a time to change them. Previous owner had change them 3 years ago and I don't know what is the typical life cycle of xenon bulbs.

I think I found a match to the factory headliner fabric with bm134.

What do you guys think ?

probably the headliner because i can't get off me arse and ship him a sag-free headliner. ;)

i wish shipping from here didn't suck so badly. unfortunately i need a full day to both build a shipping crate and drive it to syracuse (and then back home again) to ship via greyhound.

I thought that as well but the BM3109 and BM1417 do not have foam backing to them so the fabric is thinner. Most likely used on the a/b/c pillars. BM134 and BM2008 have a 1/8" thick foam backing which is what the headiner has to give it that soft touch.

Looks like a match. Wrapping the pillars I assume?

Sorta. The headliner I ended up getting was starting to sag in some parts so there goes my plan of a direct swap. Eventually it will just get worse so I might as well just recover it in new material.

Original plan was to use Alcantara but that is expensive and then I am OCD that it would not match the pillars, visors, etc.

No worries Peter. I ended up getting a headliner about 2 hours from me that was almost perfect but is starting to develop some sagging around the visors and handles. The rear of it is still perfect and the images that the seller provided made it look like it was mint.

One thing I am noticing is that on the headliner, it is not the fabric that begins to fail like on the pillars. Instead it is the foam that dries out and then the fabric has nothing to adhere with to the board itself.

I'm not sure about BM134. I plan to do the same (headliner recover) hopefully this year. I stopped at an upholstery place close to my home (they did a great job on my MINI's headliner). The guy checked my ZHP and said "this color is not black" and he found a good match for it. But I can't remember the name.

Did you have chance to compare the colors outdoors ? That's what he did, took the samples outside and compared with the sun visor.

interesting... and i'm glad you found one!

there was some BMW headliner material (with foam backing) that i found on ebay last year... i don't have it saved anymore, unfortunately - but have a look there! i think the seller was in TX, if i remember correctly. it was about $80-$90 for the amount of fabric required to do the headliner.

Good Idea actually. I will take the sample and see how it matches to some of the factory material in daylight.

This place calls is Anthracite

The hose that goes from the valve through the intake manifold up was the most difficult one for me as well. But it was easier to route it from under the manifold up without it being connected to the valve. Once it is in the correct location, install the valve and connect the hose to it. This will require some force since this is the same hose that rotates on the connection point on the valve. Some DYI instructions stated you have to rotate the hose on the valve for it to fully seat but actually you only need to rotate and press the clip when removing it. Hope this makes sense

I provided the installer with a genuine BMW windshield gasket I bought from fcpeuro.

The clutch and flywheel project has begun.

Doing it part by part in the evenings and hoping to finish the job on the weekend.

First step was to get the car up high up in the air. New Esco jackstands arrived and they are really great with the flat huge platform.

I was able to remove the exhaust and the driveshaft this evening. Spent a good bit removing the exhaust nuts on the header flange without snapping any studs. Lots of heat and patience and all 4 came out. Yay.

Driveshaft removal was a breeze.

Tomorrow hope to remove the shifter assembly and begin the removal of the trans.

More updates.

This evening I started with the shifter. Removed the knob, disconnected the pin at the bottom of the shifter rod and out came the shifter rod. The shifter seal on top of the trans is leaking so there is a coating of gear oil. New seal will fix that issue.

Then removed the visible bolts that hold the trans to the engine. No issue there. After that removed the trans brace so the transmission could give more room for the top bolts. And then the fun begins.

The top bolts are hard to reach. I ended up removing the nuts that hold the engine mounts to the front subframe and jacking up the front if the engine to pitch the back of the trans downward. That did the trick and all the bolts were removed.

Hard part is over right? Nah. Let's wrestle with removing the trans next.

Wiggle this way, wiggle that way and no movement. Fine pry bar it is. And that separated the trans from the engine. But then it would not want to come out. Came to realize the metal plate was fused together and not letting it come apart. More frustration is setting in so took a step back to analyze the problem.

The metal plate was one issue as well as the dowel pin on the trans to the starter. Once that was resolved by some gentle prying the trans came out.

Inspection time of the clutch and other parts.

Shifter seal leaking
Clutch material is low and worn
Flywheel has massive hot spots and excessive play in it.
Platic pivot pin is worn and the arm has a groove in it.
Throwout bearing is very dry.

Took some pictures along the way. See below.

Next up is removal of the flywheel and the rear main seal. And clean up.

Enjoy guys.

Another update.

Dual mass flywheel removed
Rear main seal removed and new one installed
New single mass flywheel and clutch installed
Rebuilt shifter assembly and replaced shifter seal on the trans.

Original rear main seal was dry.

Ready to get the trans back into the car now.

Pics below. New shiny parts are always nice https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180802/cb15f5c159db65a2ea4ad8209f1623e3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180802/d063c859f2cbd5001e8722496dba5865.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180802/f7982307c9dba4ca904477a27b011a34.jpg

Was there any play in the old flywheel like Peter had?

There sure was. Not to the extent of his but you could tell it was worn. Good riddance to the dual mass.

Also if you buy the rear main seal assembly, it comes with the plastic install tool. Makes it simple to install.

Just in case for anyone in the future needing torque specs

Rear Main Seal
10 mm bolts - 7 ft-lbs
13 mm bolts - 16 ft-lbs

Flywheel Bolts: 77ft/lb
Pressure Plate bolts: 18 ft/lb (8.8); 25 ft/lb (10.9)
Bell Housing bolts: 16 ft/lb (M8); 32 ft/lb (M10); 53 ft/lb (M12)

It's always impressive to me when you guys do these kind of big jobs yourself. Really cool!

Good luck Vas and thanks for sharing this with us. I'm anxious to hear how the single mass flywheel works out for you.

Ok thanks. I have some heavy vibration and I'm pretty sure it's the flywheel. Your findings reinforce that thought. The torque specs will help too!
Is the rear main seal & tool OEM ?

Thanks Rob. With the cost of labor that was quoted, I could not justify paying it.

But I am also anxious to see how the car is with this set-up too.

There was slight vibration upon takeoff with the dual mass.

The rear main seal is BMW Crankshaft Seal Kit - Part Number 11141438274 - You can buy just the seal but the kit comes with the gasket and new bolts.

Almost scary how well this install is going for you after seeing the hell that Spenser went through...knocking on wood...

$900 is a steal in terms of labor. I like doing things on my own because I know without a doubt in my mind how things were installed, but I'm not as mechanically inclined as Vas is and don't trust myself enough to do something like this.

Jobs like this are way more fun with a group of buddies just shooting the shit and working together. Wish we had maintenance days outside of the Mafia meets.

Ok good info!

You are planning on replacing your set-up? There is a new SACH performance clutch kit available. Might be a good option with a dual mass flywheel.

Lowest quote I got for just labor was around $1200. Other quotes were a couple hundred more. Parts have been roughly $700 for the conversion kit and other items.

Knock on wood for sure. Bet the starter will be an issue on the install.

I think BP was quoted $500 for the install.

I do like the idea of a maintenance meet. Always wanted to attend one or the reunion.

Yeah, mine was an absolute steal at $500. He got the job done in a total invested time of just 3 or 4 hours, and that included us BS'ing. My car did spend all day in the shop though because we found out I had to replace the clutch release arm as well since the throwout no-longer-a-bearing chewed into the metal, causing my binding clutch pedal. That killed some time as we had to order the part and I had to go pick it up from Worldpac.

Yes I have to do the clutch next. The Sach performance or stock is the direction I'm going. I'm not looking for a lot of HP over 300 at the rear wheels...

A lift makes things soo much faster.

Got the transmission back in. Not as bad as I thought it would be. However the upper bolts are still a pita.

Next up is shifter, driveshaft, exhaust and new trans fluid.

The end is near

Well you’ve already done the rear subframe bushings and clutch job, so almost anything else that is maintenance only will not be more difficult. The only other job that is bigger that I can think of right now would be an engine swap.

A trick that worked was looping a tow strap around the back of the trans and going up into the cabin. There I put a block of wood inside the car and looped the strap so this way the rear of the trans was able to hang on it own. Made it easier to handle it without having a jack under the trans.

How about installing some headers? Those look fun to remove.

Smart. And as for headers...I’m not touching the studs on the side of the block. Knowing this car they’ll turn into a red dust just by breathing on them the wrong way.

What did you end up doing with the 4 exhaust studs and nuts? Drill them out or beat them out?

Paid a shop handsomely to drill them out since I needed the Magnaflow welded anyway.

Pic below is the Turner Polyurethane Shifter Arm Bushing installed to replace the factory rubber. Will report back on the feel after putting some miles on the car.

Speaking of it, it's back on it's wheels. Got it finished last night so first drive today. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180804/4e7a60b1fdd28708dfb06aefea4f10b5.jpg
