Koni sale is live and I cannot make my mind up on what to get.
Just the Koni Yellow Shocks or the Koni Yellow Kit which is the sport shocks and the H&R sport springs? Difference in cost is roughly $100.

personally, i don't like H&R springs. too low and too soft. this is his wife's DD so stock is good, and koni yellows + stock springs should be a great setup. why mess with it?

I really like how my car feels with the Koni Sports and the stock springs. Good ride height to avoid angled curbs, but still plenty low. Ride quality was good. I wouldn't want to change them unless I planned on doing multiple track days or HPDEs.
koni yellows + stock springs should be a great setup. why mess with it?

As you guys know by now I just swapped my Bilsteins for Koni yellows and I'm on sport springs. I f'n love this setup! The more I drive the more I like my car again. The car drives really nice with these springs and shocks. I definitely don't think it's too soft and I have the shocks turned all the way down. Ride height? That's going to be a personal preference.

Pretty sure Brett has h&r sport springs, not sure what shocks though. If nothing else, if you don't like them you can sell them and get your money back out of them.
I am going to think it over and get the wife's opinion on this since it is her car. Sale goes into September as well.

What did you set the shocks at? Wondering if I should leave them at 0 or turn them up right away.

They're on 0. If I had to compare to one of our other vehicles, I'd say it's like the X1 M-Sport. firm, yet compliant if that makes sense. The beauty is that if you don't like it on 0 then you just turn them up a bit. An easier task with RE RSM (you're getting those, yes?) since you won't have to take the trunk interior apart to adjust the shocks... Personally, I like to start at 0 for a base reference point and go from there....
Yeah I got the Rouge rsm already and pretty much everything else.
Good point on using 0 as a reference point.

How much are the new springs supposed to lower our cars over the stock ZHP springs?
According to the kit 35mm front and 10mm rear on average.

Front and rear dust boots and bumpstops should arrive this week. That should be everything in terms of parts.

Wife said there is a strong clunking noise from the rear and the front left had a squeak since the weather got warm.
I am going to check it out this weekend when swapping tires and go from there.

Hmmmm... I had a "strong clunking noise" from the rear of my manual ZHP whenever I came on or off throttle abruptly. Turned out it was a spent rear diff bushing. Easy to see from the back of the car... pain in the butt to change. But it fixed it.

Vas - Looking forward to hearing how much you like the refreshed ride after you have suspension all installed. My Konis arrived last week. I'm preparing my order for all the other parts and plan to have the install in April. (I'm staggering the purchase to space out these costs).

Yeah I replaced them with factory rubber not that long ago. Was going to go with Poly but decided against it.
The ones I had removed were destroyed though especially the big bushing.

Hmm...I assume you torqued down everything correctly? I haven't had any clunking after my suspension refresh.

I have not done the suspension refresh yet. But i think the factory suspension is telling me to get it done now.

Take pictures of how the springs seat on the strut. I made the mistake of not paying close enough attention and had to take it apart again to get it right.

Yes, they don't line up like you'd think. I did it wrong once also.

I just did a similar job on my fronts today - new Koni's on stock springs. I second the "before" pics idea. It was a pain getting everything back in place just right. I also had to redo a strut. Not because of the spring... because I missed a washer that I accidentally left on the old strut mount. Doh! Had it back in the car and everything torqued up before I looked over and saw it.

You don't have compress the H&R springs on the struts. I just had my wife push down on the strut mount as I got the nut started... Kinda hard to do with just two hands.

They still had some gas in them but the front upper mounts had bearings that were shot.

Then I decided to install the z4m fcab and that killed me. Thought it was going to go smooth and easy but I struggled getting them on the arms and bolting them on. Finally got it though and set the car on the ground.
Quick glance the front is lower then before and it is visible. The rear is barely any lower.
Car is also back on summer tires.

nice. you'll need to drive it a mile or so to get it settled down and see what the true ride height is. curious for pics and ride/handling thoughts!

The shocks set at full soft equals a very smooth ride. I cannot compare to what stock suspension feels like but this could pass for that.
The lowered ride height is also noticed. The car feels more flat in corners with less body roll.
I am going to have the wife drive it for a couple hundred miles and then turn the shocks so they are a tad bit stiffer. Reason being the car feels too soft and a little bit bouncy at times.
Overall this is a great kit. Highly suggest it for the price, the drop it gives and the overall quality of the parts.
As far as the z4m fcab, no complaints either. Steering feel is great. Curious how long pure rubber bushings will last compared to the poly units that were installed.
Glad it worked out. Interested in your thoughts after you tighten them up a notch or two.

great stuff, vas. i am not surprised by the 'bouncy' comment, as i would imagine those springs need more damping. really curious to hear your thoughts when you turn up the konis.

Dampening is going to have to be turned up. I drove my sedan today which is still on factory dampers. Right off the bat you can tell that you car rides a tad bit firmer.

After the Bilsteins, I'm enjoying the Konis all the way soft... The roads down here in West Ashley SC aren't too bad :)
I am curious to see what they will be like set a 1 turn from full soft. Might give it a try this weekend.
Also want to swap front tires and see if the noise goes away. And bleed the brakes.

Quick question to those that have the Koni yellows.
How many full turns are there? If I start at full soft and turn the knob in the direction to make them firmer, I am able to only get 2.5 turns until the end of the adjustment. Is that correct?
By full turns, I mean going 360 degrees from the starting point.
Also is there a break in period for the shocks?

Yes the directions that come with the shocks state that there are 2.5 turns available.
Not sure if there is an official break in period but I ran mine full soft for several hundred miles...
Alright. That is what I thought as well.
I played with the dampening a little today with the front but then out them back to full soft till this weekend.
Rob, what do you have them set at currently ?

They are set at full soft. The fronts have about 50K on them but the backs are new warranty replacements. When I had them on the car a couple of years ago, at one point I had them turned all the way up and they get quite stiff/harsh like the Bilsteins but again, the beauty is they are adjustable ;)

Yup, 2.5 turns. I have mine set 3/4 turn from soft on all four corners. Just the right balance of comfort and performance. Down the road I might stiffen it up a bit to 1-1.25 turn from soft and see what it's like but for now I like where it is.

You know I been asking myself that same question. Some upcoming maintenance is going to be needed on it soon (oil change, fuel filter, disa rebuild/intake boots) but I am not sure if I want to modify it or just leave it the way it is. The idea of an M3 sedan is still in the back of my head for the future.

Goal for tomorrow is to turn up the dampening. Also and bleed the brake system with ATE 200.
Took a road trip to meet up with Shawn and Daniel. Thanks guys for the help.
Got the brakes flushed with ATE 200. Also turned up the dampening to 1.5 turns from full soft.

How do you like the ride now that it's at 1.5 turns from soft?
Thanks shawn for hosting and the help. Brake feel is much better now.
Shocks at 1.5 turns from full soft are perfect with these springs. Car is no longer bouncy and rides more planted. It is stiffer but not to the point where it's bad.

Thanks shawn for hosting and the help. Brake feel is much better now.
Shocks at 1.5 turns from full soft are perfect with these springs. Car is no longer bouncy and rides more planted. It is stiffer but not to the point where it's bad.
Next up are a new set of Tires. These are gone.

A hint for you: You'll notice that the Z4 bushings look like they wont fit in the hole. They need to be compressed. use a hose clamp to compress them to get them started. It will be a lot easier...

How? I had a bear of a time getting mine on.
John, you put the clamp on the bushing and tighten. It compresses the bushing so you can get it started. You put it more towards one end rather than right in the middle. once you get it started, just remove the clamp

Honestly, I like them both. I have loved the way the 135s looked since I first saw them and they are characteristic of the ZHP (and some E60s). If the 135s were lighter, I most likely would have not bothered with ARC-8s.

Yeah. They style 135 are part of the zhp and I do not mind the design but the weight of them is hefty.
For now I will keep the style 135 on the car.

Apex arc8 is common because it's a great rim at a great price. I wanted to be unique too but my car looks like a typical BMW now. Haha. (Y mesh rims, euro tails). It's okay. There could be worse images to follow than the ZHP on arc8 look.

Also to those that have installed the z4m rtab, is there a specific way they need to be aligned ? I did not see a top or bottom orientation on the bushings.
And do the limiters just sit against the nubs on the bushings? Since the face of the bushings is not flat.

the slits are there because the RTAB is larger than the hole it is suppose to go in. It sucks getting it in.

Do the final tightening of the through bolt with the vehicle on the ground. This will properly preload the bushing...

You don't need to do what it says in the diagram because you won't be touching that end. Just make sure you mark the eccentric holes holding the bracket on to the frame so you can keep the alignment correct when reassembling

Here is what the old bushings looked like. Still the original units to the car.
Glad to have them replaced. They look rough. Cracked and one was torn around the sleeve
Job took me roughly 2.5 hours. Not bad overall but tool is required

That tool makes it pretty easy I Imagine. I did mine with a ball joint press it wasn't bad but I had to get creative with the adapters to get it to work.
Yeah tool made it simple. One more thing off the list.

Let us know how they feel... I didn't notice any difference when I swapped mine out but my car was in storage when I did them so I didn't really have any seat time beforehand
Car just rolled over to 139k actually.
As far as how it feels, hard to tell at this point. Pretty sure the alignment is out of spec with how much suspension stuff I have done.
With that in mind, shall I go get it aligned or is there anything else to replace beforehand?
Recently I picked up a used Turner Motorsports pulley kit. Decided to install it this afternoon. Only did the water pump and power steering pulley though. Not sure if it's worth doing the alternator pulley.
I will need to order a new belt for the kit since I installed a used one. Plus the pulley on the mechanical tensioner is noisy and dry.

Feels good actually. More peppy starting around 3,000 rpm and up. Thought it was in my head at first but then I drove my stock car and there is a slight difference. Not a huge wow factor but just enough.
Plus they are metal so no more worries about cracked plastic pulleys.
New belt is $27 from Turner Motorsports. Going to order it and then install the alternator pulley as well

That's what I noticed too when I installed my UUC pulleys years ago. I was amazed that I could feel a difference from pulleys...
I'd think twice about under driving the alternator with all the electronics are cars have, they are pretty fussy about voltage
That thought had crossed my mind as well. Maybe I won't bother with it.

Precisely why I didn't bother getting them. It's most definitely not worth the risk, IMO.
Yeah I will leave the stock alternator pulley on the car. Water pump and alternator is totally different.
Any opinions on what else to replace before getting the car aligned?

Check tie rods. Don't strut bearings and caps?
Tie rods on the front and rear lower control arms on the rear with affiliated bushings.
I'm tempted to just replace the tie rods at this point and know they are new. Worth it?

Thanks :) Maybe some day Sketchi will get new wheels. But till then the project will continue to restore her.
So wife pointed out a weird noise from the rear. Upon take off or at slow speed, there is a whoop whoop (lol) noise.
As soon as the brakes are applied, noise goes away.
Most likely Started after I did the rtab replacement.
Any suggeations?

Yeah I put them the same way. Still have not got new ones either.
I did remove the brake caliper rattle pins and install them the correct way. They were backwards.

Or the rear alignment is different than what it was before the bushing job. That would make a tire noisy like that. Every time I've had that noise on a car, it's always been tires

I was going to leave the parking brake stuff alone for now since it still works and hold the car pretty well. I adjusted them in the past as well. Thoughts?
As far as the brake pad wires, they are currently connected but ziptied to the chassis. Guess the previous owner thought they were not needed? Just seems like a half-ass job.
Picked these up from a member. OE BMW tie rods. $115 shipped for both.

Well I checked for play and it seemed like there was a tiny bit. So mostly replacing them for the peace of mind and not having to get it aligned more then once.
I will report back on what condition they are. But my hunch is they are dead. Everything else suspension related was.

As far as the steering coupler, I replaced it a while back. The factory rubber one was split in half so I replaced it with a poly unit made by AKG.

I just found it interesting that the stock couple is made from rubber. I can understand the guibo, where it helps reduce some driveline stress, but not really sure of it's purpose in a coupler. Help absorb sudden shunts in the steering?

Huh...learn something new every day.
Yeah I did not notice any additional vibrations from the poly unit. Install was a pain but now that part is good probably for the life of the car.
Poly is the same price as a new rubber unit

Correct. Sometime this week. Then a new full set of Tires.
The old tie rods were not in terrible shape and still had life in them. But I was more worried about worn parts and having new tires wear quickly or improper.

Wife and I swapped cars this morning so I could see how close I was with the alignment. Well as soon as I left the driveway, the dsc and brake lights came on. Steering wheel is about a 1/4 turn off from being straight. Car drives terrible down the road.
Called the local place where I take the car for alignments so taking it in this morning.

So just picked it up.
Quick drive back to the office I noticed right way the car tracks straight. Feels good.
Front Camber is at -1.5 and rear is at -1.7 for both sides.

The car rides soo nice now with all new suspension parts.
Heading home I took some back roads that have a good amount of twisty turns.
I'm impressed with the way the car rides now. It's perfect for a daily driver. Comfy but composed and corners very well.
Can't wait to put some new tires on it. Wife is going to be pleased

My buddy has those on his NB Miata. He really likes them, but says they're not great in the cold. Doesn't matter for him since he only drives it in the late spring through the early fall when it's warm.
Sounds good since during the colder months, the winter tires get put on.

That "anti-rust" coating is very temporary, BTW... the braking surface will still rust when it gets wet.
We shall see what happens. The price I paid for is worth trying then out.

the anti-rust coating is really for the hub itself, so it doesn't rust and look unsightly. i've got those zimmermann blanks on my car and the hubs look great.
