View Full Version : Matching fog color to xenon

Now that I have my headlights sorted out, I'd like to replace the fog light bulbs to match the xenon color. From research, I've seen Hoen xenonmatch bulbs mentioned frequently. Are those the best bet? Better options?

Just get one that's the same temp as your Xenon bulb. That should do the trick, but only if your fogs are HID. If they're not HID then it's a moot point as it won't quite match no matter what you do.
Factory Xenon bulbs are 4300k in temperature.

Get the same bulbs as your headlights if you want a near perfect match. May be some subtle difference because of the ballast.

I don't have HID fogs and wasn't planning on that upgrade. My last ZHP had bulbs that pretty closely matched the factory HID temperature. I think they were Hoens, but came with the car.

Bumpin and oldie. So 4300 is close to the color of our Xenon low beams? I"m not sure what's in my car by I need new HID bulbs. I was leaning towards 5k or even 6k, but I don't want to be too blue...

Factory temp is 4300k. 5000k is the whitest output you can get, with a very slight tinge of blue.

Actually 5000k is whitest output but with a very slight yellow, not blue. 6000k is the white with a slight tinge of blue. Just wanted to post this correction. if you have to have the absolute perfect match between fogs and your Xenons, then it is easiest to get the fog HID kit with matching 9006/D2S bulbs. :thumbsup
Shawn, 5000k will provide the whitest look without any tinge of blue if that's what you're going for :thumbsup

Thanks Charlie. I wish I knew what the PO had installed as I like the color. DDM bulbs the best route? (Even with @$12 s/h?)

To be honest DDM bulbs are cheap but they work. I have been using DDM bulbs for years and have not had any issues from my experience. For the price you just can't beat them :thumbsup

Dunno Charlie, 6k looks really blue to me, and is why I went back to 4300k when I tried the 6k's you gave me.

I have 4300K and they do not match perfectly. I would say the 5000K's would look better.

I installed the 5k DDM bulbs. They may be a bit bluer than I wanted but they are bright and I'm glad I didn't go any higher.
I tried to catch them during different parts of the day No post processing of these JPGs. (Highlights are a tad blown).

Looks good. The daytime photos it looks like a perfect match. You can see the blue tint in the night photos. Still looks good IMO.

Shawn, I like how the 5000k's look....more like a white output compared to the look of your fogs.... it almost looks like your fogs are 6000k's. I agree with Gary, still looks good :thumbsup

I like them. Charlie, the output on the ground is only slightly blue at the part closest to the lights and the out put is similar to office lighting. I have 5000 in my e30 headlights and it has a similar blue tint when you look at them but the output is completely white from behind the steering wheel.

Rule of thumb is most HID bulbs within a reflector housing will "appear" one to two color temps higher than the color temp that is in your projector. I don't know the exact reason but I think it's to do with light color refraction and distance traveled to the outside of a curved projector versus a reflector that immediately throws the light out everywhere without any true focusing.
I know in my car I have 5000K-5500K bulbs in my headlight projectors and older 6000K in my reflector fogs. That makes my fogs look a little more blue/purple than the headlights. If I were to go it all again I'd install 4300K-5000K in the fogs to match my higher temp headlight bulbs. My parents have 4300K in their minivan reflectors which were very close to 6000K Ultinons from my old ZHP projectors.

The 9006, 5000k per Charlie's recommendation. They come from China so expect to wait 7-10 days.
Get the 35w kit if you don't have ballasts.
