View Full Version : What's the best tire for the price right now?

Hey all, looks like my tires are "cupped" per the stealership. They want 1 MEEELION dollars for new tires so I'm going to look elsewhere. I've been out of the game for so long now that I have no idea who makes good tires.

Any ideas for a decent tire at a good price? Not looking for something super sticky, but don't want to give up too much in the way of performance.

Also, is there anyone reputable online selling wheel/tire packages that aren't like $2k?
I think I *may* also have a bent rim so I might just take this opportunity to go with those Alzor BBS LM style wheels or maybe some Gunmetal VMR 710's.

Any thoughts on that?

We have plenty of threads and opinions on good tires. Michelin PSS, Kuhmo, Continental... check the tire section for details. We have tire dealers as affiliates on our site. Not sure if Tire Rack still is, but they are always worth checking. As for wheel combos, not sure about that one. Good luck with your search. Also, a big part of the decision is type of driving and climate, that will help with the suggestions.

I really like the look of the VMRs. GLWSearch!

Thanks! I saw all the various threads but had no clue where to start...I guess I'll start w/ thread #1 lol.

Lol. Yup, TONS of opinions. We really should narrow some of that down, as there are so many.

Bridgestone Potenza S04 are great tires. Not too expensive. Very good performance.

^ Thanks, I'll check that out. The few places I've called have all endorsed the Mich. Pilot Sport, A/S 3. I can get all 4 mounted and balanced for about $900. Didn't want to spend that much but I also don't want to skimp on tires.

Yes. Tire rack is an affiliate.

Pilot Super Sports.

Also, if your tires are cupped you might need new shocks, don't be letting a new set go to waste by riding on shot shocks

Kumho Ecsta 4x still get my vote.

Check out the Yokohama YK580's. I paid $135 a tire for 235/40/18's and they great! Also look at the VMR 710's, love them!

I run Hankook V12s Evo2.

I run 205 and 225 on 17" Wheels for $320. $80 Rebate FTW

Conti DWS....but I'd definitely roll the Khumo 4X.

You looking for summer, or all season?

Looking for all season but with a good nudge to the performance side of things. I'm about to drop $1065 for the mich sport as3, installed with an alignment. Everything I've read points to them. My shocks should be fine, they still feel like they dampen the springs fine. I think the cupping occurred due to bad alignment and dead FCABs. The previous owner really didn't take care of things when they were needed.

I have the AS3's on the Mini :)

The other recent development is this...I love the ZHP, I really do...but I've been thinking about an m3 lately. Either a late e46 or early e90/92. For the amount of $ I need to put into the ZHP to really get it in top shape ($1k in tires included) ...I'm wondering if it would be better to cut my losses, sell it and pick up an m3. I'm assuming most of you have gone through this crisis, right?

I'm too deep into my ZHP. I'm just going to cut my losses and throw an S54 in it. :)

DWs gets my vote 10/10 times for the money.

Yep but doesn't mean you should too. Trust me a boosted Zhp would likely be just as much fun.

The M3 comes with so many more issues for you to have to deal with regularly.

I checked the dw's and they weren't that much cheaper at Mr. Tire. Anyway, I had them put the Michelin pilot a/s 3's on and omg. Amazing difference. Of course, when your existing tires are cupped, anything would be an improvement.

I had a bad experience with some pilot hxmx's a while back so I tend to stick with the conti's these days

No the lack of grip in cold rain that sent me off a country road at 60 mph. Lol

Nope... After putting nearly 2k into it over the last 3 weeks, I'm keeping it for a very long time. Someone will get a very well maintained, yet high mileage, zhp someday. [emoji2]

Besides who wouldn't want to run a tire so bad asses they named after Dane Wilson?

Pilot super sports aren't cheap, but tire rack has a $70 gift card if you buy four. Not bad.

I'm with Seth on this one myself, though. The Conti DW/DWS lines have proven to be some of the most popular tires on the block. The DW will run you $624 for a set now. Good deal if you ask me.

Definitely a good deal and I'll be filling out the papers for the $70 rebate (aka visa gift card). Unfortunately I was under a time/availability crunch as well. I was in Raleigh NC, leaving that night for MD. I needed to get it done asap. Well, after almost 350 miles in about 5.75 hours, I'm loving the A/S 3's.

I don't know if PSS are the best for the buck, but to me (and apparently others) they are the best that are not ridiculously priced... they are not cheap though.

Agreed there JR. Top performer for a reasonable price however it really all comes down to what you are using them for.

FWIW switched recently to PS3's on the Avant sport wagon from DWS's. They do drive differently, more like the PSS's on the ZHP which I love. I'll let you guys know after I put some more miles on them and take them around a few on ramps etc at speed as to how much better. They were almost $200 more for the set when all done.

Yes, forgot to mention that like I did in other posts. For those, I'm talking summer tires. Thanks for the reminder.

Yeah I hear Ya buddy but even different summers have different use/purposes. DW's and PSS are great Max Summer tires that both will last a while with a 300 tread wear rating but don't think for a second they will outperform a Star Spec or RE-11 on a track or even autoX. All are considered summer tires but the different classes are there for a reason so it's important to be objective pertaining to use.

That being said I think we were assuming all around performance for the money in which case yes I agree with you. ;)

A max summer will get you about 80-85% performance of an extreme. And a PSS is top rated but expensive and a DW is about 95% just as good as a PSS from what I hear. So to me for the money the DW is a winner for a car driven spiritedly on the road and might see a track once in a while.

Best bang/buck imho:

Summer: Cooper RS3-S... no joke... these are better performing tires than Michelin PS2.
All-Season: Kumho Ecsta 4X... not great in snow, but they are definitely a solid performing tire.
