Going over some of the items on this 05 ZHP I may purchase and the owner has stated that occasionally the indicator light will come on for the rear lights. He says it is intermittent and the lights have always worked 100% of the time. the shop wrote on their invoice for recent work that the bulbs were replaced and everything was still in working order but that "might need to have carriers or lsz (light control module/switch) replaced.
has anyone had this issue before as I've never heard of it? if so, can you shed some light on it and how much the fix was.
i searched quickly on BF and here with no info turned up.

There is a sedan ground tail light recall that fixed a bad ground at the bulb carriers. It was the reason for a false bulb warning on the cluster. You maybe able to get it done at the dealership at no charge to you. Also you may want to check if your car has done the passenger airbag recall as well. These two will be no charge to you and can be done by the dealer.

Congrats on your new ride? :)
If you want, PM the last 7 of the VIN, I may be able to tell you if the recalls have been done or not.

Im aware of the airbag recall, the current owner has the notice sitting on his desk at work and was told by the dealer that they would contact him when they were ready to service his car for that as they didn't have the parts in stock due to the quantity of the recall.
If I pick this car up, its going to BMW for the airbag and I'm sure ill have to check into this indicator light as well.
Through a little more research it seems as though it could be caused by a number of things: corroded bulb trays/carriers, incorrect bulbs, bulbs building up resistance over time, etc. The shop where he services the car at seems to think its the LCM though.

If you have the last 7 of the VIN, i could check the information on the sedan ground recall. If it hasn't been done, at least you know its a possibility that is the cause.

ah really, cool. heres the last 7:

the current owner used to work as a BMW sales person (bought the car new from his dealer after going through a lease program) so I'm inclined to think this is an issue with bulb trays/corrosion and not a missed recall.
Sounds like the tailight recall needs to be done on the car.
Any pics of this vehicle?

Shoot, if he is a BMW sales person, he should have access to the DCS report to verify the recalls are still open.

FYI, i had my car in on tuesday for both recalls. they replaced everything for the taillight recall, and i still had a brake light bulb issue - turns out the LCM is faulty (they swapped in a known-good LCM from my service advisor's 2005 E46 sedan). they are attributing the failure to the taillight recall and getting me a new LCM for free - i just need to schedule a time to get back in there.

i wonder if thats common place, good to know though. if the indicator light still comes up maybe i can push that argument on them as well and get them to cave on it. if they are directly related, i personally believe that LCM should be covered as well.
should have more info on closing a deal on this car in the next 36 hours or so. ideally, id like to fly down to charlotte weds but won't know on that yet.

i doubt it - i was very surprised when they told me they were going to get it taken care of under the recall.

worth a shot, kudos to you though. id say thats a stroke of luck as well haha. honestly though, like i said, if its directly related and a recalled item caused a secondary issue: that should be replaced free of charge as well. just my .02 and not because i like free shit haha

Elevating it to the service director and BMW NA cause things to happen.

Best one I heard. California Lemon Buy Back Law. Customer complains exhaust is too loud, dealership cannot fix 3 times, calls BMW NA, gets E60 M5 returned and payments reimbursed.. LOL.
or E90 M3. Complains LSD is loud and clunking (nature of LSD gears have a slight clunk to them). 3 visits to the dealership and failure to fix (unsure if it is even possible) and BMW NA buys the car back fearing "negative" publicity.
It's possible. :)

HOLY HELL haha. thats hilarious. i mean ultimately, if it ends up being the LCM it is what it is if they don't replace it for free/under warranty. ill just find an ample replacement part and do that. either way, its getting fixed because i dealt with enough cluster lights on the various volkswagens i have and i hardly ever had any in my old ZHP unless it was low on washer fluid, its aggravating to look at.

I have a spare LCM if you want it. Auto lights, Xenon, auto leveling. Same as what the ZHP you're looking at has. Functions perfectly.
