View Full Version : WTB: ZHP driveshaft

As titled, I need a ZHP driveshaft. Mine is quite out of balance and is destroying CSBs...
I don't want to risk having it rebuilt and it still being a problem as I can't afford a rebalance AND a replacement; it's one or the other. So, I need a driveshaft that is KNOWN GOOD.

Anyone have one?

BP, I'll dig through my parent's shed. I don't think I got rid of my whole 330i rear end yet.

These guys (http://recycler.car-part.com/Andover/) have one from a 2003 xi, stock #2073 and looks to be pretty close from your neck of the woods. Might be worth giving them a call... Otherwise maybe Dario's parts car ? Good luck with the search!

Mine is from a GM auto tranny. Won't fit I believe.

I believe an Xi has its own specific driveshaft too?

Never been under or worked on an xi, but doesn't the awd have 2 different and completely different driveshafts?

The driveshaft I need has to be from a 6-speed manual 330 RWD. It shouldn't matter whether it's ZHP or not.

BP, this was the problem with that M3 I bought & turned this summer. After researching the rebuilt vs. other options potential issues, I just bit the bullet and bought a new one, think it was about $900 with a 20% discount (online buyer program at local dealer). Bruce

Also, when reinstalling there's a little bit of alignment required. If you don't align it properly, it'll eat the CSB in no time.

BP, Portland Driveshaft. I know of several club members that have used these guys. Excellent product, service and price. Note, their driveshafts use to have a lifetime warranty but last I heard it is now 1 year.

Unless they will ship with a refundable core charge paid, I think BP can't be without his car for a few days.

This, but the core charge would probably be more than I could afford. I was looking around for used driveshafts and found a few for under 300; this is why I'm looking for used ones. New ones are out of the question unfortunately.

Either way I look at it, I'm going to need to borrow a car because I literally can't even take a couple of hours off at this point. The problem is, my friend's E36 M3 that I usually borrow is also out of commission so I'm stuck until that car gets fixed anyway. My car is a ticking time bomb right now. Ugh...

It looks like this will be my best option, as much as it pains me to spend an entire paycheck on the part and the labor to install it. Thanks for the heads up; it sure as hell beats $700+ for a new one.

Yeah. I know how you feel. The PO of my 330i installed a lightweight flywheel and racing clutch. I decided to go back to OEM. Spent $750 for new DMF/clutch AND another $400 in labor to get that taken care of. Once they reinstalled the driveshaft there was a ridiculous vibration at all speeds under load that would oscillate in and out. Especially bad going up hill.

The mechanic let me know the driveshaft had this black goop all over the CSB which we assumed the PO put on to dampen the vibrations and avoid buying a new shaft. So I had to bend over and lay out another 400+150 in labor.

Good news is car is running perfect. Hoping this is the last of the surprises for awhile...

Good luck sir

I'm about 90% sure I still have my zhp driveshaft at my parents. I will check this week if it is still there.

Wow. I guess a bunch of us have these driveshaft issues (me included). Thank you for the link sir! $400 is nice. The indy wanted $600 + shipping both ways to refurbish mine (and have the car out of commission for several weeks probably).

FWIW, the indy quoted 4-5 hrs of labor.. So if you're not DIY'ing, this is something to consider.

The top of the CSB is supposed to have the black goo, it's called butyl rubber tape, or something like that. I even bought some new when I did my CSB but ended up re-using the existing black goo, scraping some of it off the old CSB and putting it onto the new CSB.

^^ Yes, it could potentially be huge; I wonder what it would cost to ship it, being a large heavy object? What would you ask for it, Derek? I think shipping would be the deciding factor on whether to get this one or a new one from the above mentioned link, or...

I sent an "application" form to Portland to get an estimate. Let's see what they say.

For a comparison point, My indy in WI quoted me 2 hours. Took it in and he had it done in 1.5 hours. 4-5 hours seems a bit much considering they are only removing the exhaust, some heat shields, and then the DS

It took my shop 2-3 hours to replace the CSB in my car a few weeks ago...

Very interesting. Then I'm kind of at a loss as to why the driveshaft started vibrating (considering it was fine before they took it apart). I assumed they just did not install it the same way when they put it back in or something- but of course they said they did. Had no choice but to buy a remanned one. :caseyshrug Could have just been a worn out driveshaft considering the car is at 100K+ and has been tracked a good amount in its lifetime by the PO.

It's actually not that heavy more so awkward in size. I am heading back to my parents this thursday so I will check then. If I do have it, I'll go hunt down a Ginormous box. Consider it yours for whatever it cost me to get a box and ship it out to you.

I have to CONFIRM I have it though. I'm 90% sure I have it but I haven't check the shed in awhile and I'm not sure if my parents toss some pieces or not. I'm not heading out to my parents till end of the week so I can't check till then.

If they took the driveshaft apart and didn't assemble it in the same spot (by marking the front and back pieces) then it could have been out of balance after being reinstalled. If they didn't push the new CSB forward before tightening it down (or literally tightening it up), that could be a problem too. It's also possible the U-joint on your old driveshaft just wore out and it was time for a new one.
