That hurts to watch, but it is a reality check :( just out of curiousity, is that something DSC would have been able to save? Or at least could it have kept them on the road? Is the M3 traction control system any different than what is in the ZHP (aside from whatever tweaks are needed to support the ///M's LSD)?

Well, did some driving today. Man, this car is fast. It is far more visceral than the ZHP. You couldn't put them in the same sentence.

Already have a list of things that need to be done:

RTABs.
Small clunk in the front when hitting bumps. Pretty sure it's the sway links.
MTL into the transmission.
Nice deep cleaning.
Refresh fluids.
Inspect VANOS.
Adjust valves.

Yet my dad goes WOT with her in his 540i and rips it to 80mph to merge and she doesn't say anything minus the scenery passing by quicker than usual.

I think so...the butt dyno feels like it's 100HP more but it's really just the racket of all the engine components dancing together in perfect circular unison turning that kinetic energy into hybrid like, rubber burning, oil burning, diff oil burning, fuel burning chaos.

So I met up with a friend today and we looked over the car and we've discovered that the rear right quarter has been replaced and the majority of the right side of the car has been repainted. Luckily, they did a pretty damn good job. Just need to cut and polish a few spots with orange peel and it'll look original. :)

Just another example of what I've said before: just because CarFax said it doesn't mean jack.

Oh, and I freaking love this car? I just maxed out first and second gear to show my brother what it's like and he was blown away. :) I hate that I'm so busy this week. I'm dying to clean her up and do some small stuff to her, but I don't have the time!

Beautiful car Dario. At first I didn't like it, but a closer look and I started eyeballing Carbon Black, its an amazing color...

I will have to agree with Trevor though...

I've come to realize that the '///M' on the back of certain BMWs stands for MONEY... And those 3 little forward slashes before the M, those are like multipliers, because everything is 3x as expensive as it is on a non-M version of the same vehicle...

///M = ///Money and ///Maintenance

Oh yeah, enjoy it. :biggrin

Rovert
09-24-2014, 12:38 AM
It's not really that bad. I have many local friends who have come from 330's and went to ///M3's as daily drivers. As long as you do the preventative just like any other car and source it from a quality place online, maintenance cost will not be that bad.

The only cost that I see that will be more significant is 20% additional fuel, an $80 DIY oil change vs $40, rear diff fluid is two to three times the cost as non-M. Luckily most of those fluid costs spread out over mileage which makes it small.

VANOS bullet proofing is a few hundred just as the VANOS seals/rattle kit was for my ZHP.

The cooling system is built a bit more tough so there shouldn't be any sudden ET explosions. A standard water pump is the cost of a nice Stewart pump for a non-M.

Subframe reinforcements are similar to any E46 cost but with more power it's easier to weaken prematurely if you aren't smooth on the throttle.

It's going to be a learning process but I'm ready for the journey. Dario make sure you keep a decent budget for your "new-to-you" car and treat her with a lot of respect. She can bite back quicker if you let your guard down.

An LSD gives you more control but first you must know how to react fast to it. I was out in the wet tonight and I goosed it too much on a left turn and needed a speedy countersteer to keep the car on it's track. I did it on purpose but the speed of how it loss traction was much faster than our ZHP. This car will stretch your skills, limits and fears but she'll reward you with an amazing experience as you learn her driving dynamics.

Would it be possible that your new, reinforced subframe, could put more stress and wear on the stock suspension and components?

No. The subframe needed more strength to withstand the suspension, not the other way around.

then perhaps it's something suspension related since you have your subframe reinforced.....hopefully it's something simple. :) I don't think it will be your subframe since BMW did the reinforcement.

If a chassis is repaired to do what a properly designed car should do, then premature wear of suspension components from a working chassis would be the least of concern. There is another underlying issue that must be diagnosed and found!

I suppose its not as drastic when you're talking about a 10 year old E46, but I've found that the price difference between non M E70s and our X5 is staggering... Bear with me for a moment... OEM front rotors... $415/each.

Wow this diff just wants to spin. Some light rain fell out in Sacramento; really gotta be gentle with the throttle. A few accidental wheel spins from first and a slight slide in second. Not even over 3k rpm on any of those. 285s in back and it's like they aren't even there.

This is definitely not a ZHP.

Rovert

LOL the rears spin easily in first or second during a turn in the rain. She'll slip and force you to quickly countersteer. Get used to it if you aren't, and force yourself to test DSC in safe right turns. The back will throw out a few feet before DSC kicks in but with some finesse you'll learn to react to it subconsciously so when the big thing really happens, you'll be completely ready.

Think of it this way, the wider the tire, the more water it has to push. The diff isn't doing you any favors in the rain either. You'll get it dialed in with seat time.

Mine's not glorious looking and it's hard to see what I was doing. I was mostly counter steered going around in circles in a tight arc and then I hit the throttle for too long and she completely span me. So I timed the throttle with steering to land in the direction of my escape. LOL. This car needs much more room to hold this or I was chicken with the throttle since I didn't want to boost into anything that doesn't move if my car decides to kiss it. You can hear my slightly understeering since the arc was tight and traction could be lost so easily. Some people do it like a brake stand but I didn't feel like subjecting my car to domestic abuse....no pun intended.

I did try to walk it briefly but the rear wheels did the wheel hop so I quit doing that instantly. All I can say is it's so easy to learn the control of an LSD. It's very predictable.

Why is this not a motion picture? And yeah...I'm saving up exclusively for an LSD for my ZHP, I think it really is the best mod, the ZHP Package would have been complete with the "BMW Performance M-Variable Lock Limited Slip Differential" added to the list. Would have put it RIGHT in the middle between the 330 and M3 instead of 1/4 of the way there.

Rovert

It's really nice. Once it starts to lose traction the car will always rotate slower or faster with small throttle adjustments. Just slowly ease throttle while countering and it returns to your desired line with no jerking around like an open diff. While the open diff can rotate, it takes a lot handy work to unbalance the rear correctly for a smooth rotation.

I was just revving in my video and you can see as the RPMs increased the rate of rotation sped up. It was interesting to play with.

LOL having fun.

To take advantage of that nice slippery surface, you want to get the car moving in a circle first. Get it to a speed where you've used 70% of your traction then firmly put on throttle until the rear tires loose traction. Once rear traction is lost you must make sure it stays lost or else the tires will grip and it'll instantly plant the rear. Harder said than done when learning and getting used to it without going overboard. It's also easier with a stiffer suspension. My ZHP was setup so oversteer much more easy than a stock M3, but the open diff limited the smoothness a LSD offers. I'm taking this way too seriously. I'm having just as much fun as you Dario and I've had it for few months longer. Every drive is exciting like my ZHP after 10 years. I miss that car...her body was turned to scrap metal which was worth $25. LOL

Yeah...the 3.38 LSD in the turbo is friggin awesome. Both wheels spinning on launch is the best! Just need a new transmission mount to really feel comfortable in first gear dumping the clutch on boost.

The M3 I test drove needed some things, but I could really romp on it and not feel bad. I enjoyed driving it and in the future I will have one, but a sub 3,000 lb car with a worked engine really does it for me right now.

How'd you like the agency power exhaust? I'm sure it was cool for the time you were driving but try and pay attention to the drone. You'll notice the OEM exhaust has the same drone, but it is hard to hear because of the muffler casing/fiber. It's really hard to improve the sound of these cars without headers and if you do headers the dB increases as well. The engine noise is substantially louder on the M3 compared to the 330, but really no intake noise.

So my rear right wheel is cambered in a harder than the left, which is why that tire was worn so hard. I'm not sure why that is so, so I'm going to take it to my alignment shop Monday morning to see if they can tell me what it is. Best case scenario it's a bad alignment, worst case is bent body metal from the accident to the rear right. However, I did some digging in the trunk and it doesn't look like the rear shock tower was worked on so I don't think that's the case. We'll see.

No. I'm just being weird. The car looks fine and most people would never notice.

We'll see.

In any case, next paycheck will yield new RSMs and RTABs.

The RTABs and alignment should fix this issue. I had the same exact issue; worn RTABs.

Off. If I need a boost in throttle response I just turn on my sprint booster.

Sport button is way better than SB, IMO. It's way more polished.

Congrats on the car man. It looks fantastic and well kept. No need to worry on imperfections. Like any car it just needs to be cleaned up to the new owners standards. Let me know if you need any help wrenching.

I would have loved to have a repainted car, as long as the job was done properly... I'm glad my car's paint shows its mileage since I live in the city. The dents that sometimes appear randomly don't stand out! But then I see your point, especially since your OB sedan was clear of any body work. I'd be crazy OCD about my paint if I had a low-mileage car with a virgin body :rofl

Problem with this is that you don't know how thick the clear coat is. Otherwise you could wet-sand it and then buff it to get rid of the orange peel. Also no clue what kind of clearcoat is on there so if its something cheap like Omni, it does not have a good life span. Stuff like PPG 3000 for example lasts up to 10 years. Omni half of that or even less if its thin.

If you know a detailed really well, the might even let you use their digital clear coat meter. Those things don't come cheap.

True. It's in a spot that is hardly noticeable, though. No big deal.

Perhaps. But I really do believe that there is a barrier at around 300hp that differentiates cars. I never felt like this in the ZHP.

Have you driven a 335 before? That has a different feel to it as well. The ///M just has a more mechanical feeling than the "softer" 335.

I'd love to drive one and see if it feels "soft" to me. But I feel that, in general the more visceral the experience, the more intoxicating the experience. Kind of like having a really nice exhaust on a Porsche boxer with the top down... In a tunnel. As opposed to stomping it a V8 Hyundai Genesis. :dunno

There is defiantly something more emotional about wringing out the S54 in between 5000 and 8000 to get the power versus just stomping on the throttle of a turbo car to have near instant torque at 2000. The 335's torque band is preferred in the city where it's unpredictable, whereas on a predictable open road, the S54 has this intoxicating race engine sound that is addicting to hear!

I completely agree with you Trevor. Also why I think having a zhp and an m or an m and something else would be ideal. The m can be a daily, but it does flirt with being too awesome for a daily because it just begs and begs for your foot to push harder and faster to the floor. It just doesn't like soft daily driving. It wants rough, hard, fast, loud, and curves. Now I think I'll go on a drive this morning lol

I'm starting to enjoy the "coded" M track mode now that I'm getting used to and trusting the LSD. This is a great (and not so great) thing as it adds a new and expensive dimension to RWD from the ZHP. LOL. Yes tires....

S54 > N54. All day long.
S54 is the real deal. N54 is a pretender. Turbos are cheating, plain and simple. I appreciate the work that goes into building something naturally aspirated. Putting turbos on something is the lazy way out, IMO.

So, I think I'm going to undertake a project next summer. If I can get some insurance money down the line (sideswipe, parking accident, etc), I might consider:

Fully sanding down and prepping the car for paint myself and paying someone to paint it. Total cost would be about $1,500-$2,500. Colors considered would be a simple respray, some type of orange metallic, or Technoviolet. Maybe something else.

Or, sand the car down and prep for paint. Primer it all, and the. Vinyl wrap it. Similar cost, but I could do something along the lines of matte gray or matte red.

In the meantime... Maintenance.

Most likely option. Then again, if I fully repaint, I'd want to keep it! And doing something out of the ordinary would be awesome.
