I like the charts. I'll have to add one to mine. I have a ton of data and pivots to see how much was spent per category etc. I passed the sheet onto the new owner of my old ZHP as well. Kinda a nice feature as long as the person believes the data/paired with snapshots of the virtual receipts from different vendors.

I have a spreadsheet for my ZHP and just started one for my E36 M3. But I don't like really clear charts because then it's too easy to see exactly how much I spent on the car!

So far on the E36 M3 I'm almost $1000 into parts and labor so far, including a bunch of parts I purchased but haven't installed yet.

that's a great spreadsheet, derbo - i like that... however, i don't track expenses - i don't want to see that. :) and to be fair, i typically don't make frivolous purchases - most items i buy are either PM purchases or break/fix purchases.

but i do keep excel spreadsheets of all of my cars.

Having receipts to back it up is the only way it's actually worth anything. This sucks for those of us who DIY things; there is no paperwork to back up professional installation. :(

I never kept receipts for anything. You can look at the car and verify stuff if you want, but at the end of the day, you always have to believe the seller at his word. Receipts can be faked. The parts may have never been installed, etc...

Tightened down my rear seat latches today. Hopefully gets rid of the awful creak when the body flexes. Also installed a new intake filter even though the old one was fine.

Tried to install AUX but I got the wrong one. Need to return and get the one for navi.

S54 > N54. All day long.
S54 is the real deal. N54 is a pretender. Turbos are cheating, plain and simple. I appreciate the work that goes into building something naturally aspirated. Putting turbos on something is the lazy way out, IMO.

He who preaches about MPG...Doesn't like the more efficient engine. Huh.

Depends entirely on what you're looking for. If owning a "pure" piece of engineering is more important to you than power or daily drivability, then sure, get the S54. Otherwise, the N54 & N55 take the cake by a long shot. The 335's produce massive power for pennies, and having that insane torque from 1800RPM is fantastic. Not to mention that the car as a whole is way more up to date and refined. To me, the biggest advantage of the E46 M3 is the looks - IMO it's still the best looking BMW ever made.

If I didn't have to get an SUV to fit my dog, I'd still have my 335. In fact, whenever I'm able to own two cars, a 335 will be immediately making its way to my garage. Loved that car!

I'm not saying the S54 is better. I'm saying that I don't like it when an engine has cheat devices attached to it. Turbos are cheating in my view.
Oh, and if you're getting either engine, you obviously aren't in it for the fuel economy, so it doesn't matter what mpg's you get.

And I got pulled over for no plates. All checked out, though. Cops were totally cool, and we spent a few minutes talking about M3 prices and whatnot. It was hilarious. They thought $17.5k was way too much for a 10-year-old car. I told them good luck finding a manual. :rofl

Some DMVs have plates but all the ones I've seen here do not. I know if there is a pending loan on the car too, it takes some time to clear everything especially if it is out of state.

So, daily report.

New RTABs are in. Slightly damaged one of the threads for the bolts on the left side but I sorted things out and got it in there. RSMs just need to be assembled. Tranny fluid has been changed to MTL RedLine. Old fluid looked like dirty water.

Also changed the engine oil to LiquiMoly 10w60.

Turns out, my CDV has been removed already, and a SS clutch line has been installed! Sweet. So I just need to bleed with new fluid when I get my lines in the mail from Ray.

Tomorrow morning is transmission mounts. Inspected my guibo; looks brand new. Score.

Also need to inspect rear left axle more closely. Wet around there. More like grease, though.

New sway links installed, as well. Old ones had cracked boots but weren't too loose overall.

Gonna finish off with a subframe look around and that'll be it for this round.

Next up will be valve adjustment and new plugs.

True my car has been modified, but the first time you heard it with Dimitri it was pretty much stock. I just had removed the one resonator in section one. Awesome! Has your high-pressure power steering hose leaked yet? I know they all do it. I was told that the crimps just get weak over time so all they need are cheap hose clamps around each crimp to tighten them up so they don't leak. I need to get on that soon as well as changing out my CPV gasket with an aftermarket one I got from an M3F member since OEM one also fails and hardens due to cheap rubber.

My immediate place to check first:

Camber Arm
Lower Control Arm (Spring sits on this)
Trailing Arm

Same side that the quarter panel was replaced?

Put up the specs from the alignment. Need to know how much it is off.

Could be something as simple as the camber arm or could be the trailing arm. Since the car was in an accident, something got bent and never replaced I bet.

He said he "compensated" for the rear right being straight. Not really sure what that means in terms of alignment, though. Anyways, the car drives much better now that it's been aligned but I'd like to get those things sorted eventually. I'll take a gander when I'm installing SS lines.

This doesn't make any sense. Your right rear wheel is slightly toe out, and he compensates by adding more toe in on the left?

That is what I was thinking. Seems ass backwards. I would look under the car and see if anything looks bent.

derbo
10-20-2014, 02:59 PM
Well it looks like he might have been trying to reduce the thrust angle in the rear to minimize even worse handling but it's toe out on one side and toe in on the other is half backwards for handling and tire wear.

There is plenty of toe adjustment capability from the factory. The toe adjuster always has more than enough toe to set the alignment correct. Keep in mind the more negative camber the more toe out you will get.I would look into the trailing arms and see if they are straight.

Either the motor mounts let the engine move too much and it hit the shroud and detonated, or the WP was shaking and it let the fan move. Either way, things like the shouldn't happen and I will be converting.

Did the ZHP's electric fan always turn on when the car was running? I don't ever recall seeing it spinning. It stayed on once after a long redline drive up a hill then within a 30 seconds of getting it parked the fan stayed running. I'm thinking there is enough forward airflow to keep things cool? Hopefully with the S54 conversion, you get back some power lost from spinning that fan!

Mine is always there too. I have heat from HVAC just the same as my 330 did. If I work the car hard when the temps are warm outside then it'll reach fully vertical but once I settle down it goes back down. I remember monitoring my coolant temps with my phone and wireless OBDII when I'm driving and it wasn't alarming. I think coolant temp was in between 70 and 80 Celsius. I can reconfirm that when I'm out again tomorrow if you'd like.

Back on the road. No fan installed yet, but considering the weather (windy, high 70's), it should be fine. Just did a spirited 10 mile drive and it didn't heat any differently than when the fan was there. Feels a little faster, too. Just a bit. Wouldn't surprise me if the fan was a bit of a parasite of power.

Anyways. Getting the new radiator to seat correctly was a royal pain for reasons unbeknownst to me, but I got it in.

Seriously, two countries could wage war in the space she had behind her car, and yet she slooooooooowly inched back until she could turn and drive away. She looked at me and I shamelessly laughed at her.

I can't expect my M not to get hit. That's why I pay for good insurance.

I was talking to Trevor last night and he told me about your busted fan Dario....Damn!!! Sorry to see this happen to you! I suspect your fan clutch failed which caused the destruction of your fan. This has happened a few times and have been noted over at M3Forum.

My ///M is at 164k at the moment and I have a replacement fan clutch but need to get new fan blades then I can replace mine as a preventive maintenance measure. Now I feel the urgency of getting this done after seeing your pic above.....:/

God seeing this crap go wrong hurts. Glad you'll have the body covered by insurance and the fan is already or will be squared away today. Let me know when you want to tackle the valves and such so I can make sure I'm free unless Dima has the stuff.

Thanks, everyone. Gonna file a claim today or tomorrow. Hopefully they pay me out some decent money. I'm gonna leave the damage there for now, though.

I don't think he has the shim tool. I'd be down to do it with you, of course. I have the WiseCo shim kit that everyone is talking about over on M3F, and all we'd need is to actually do it... but I've been slammed for time in school recently. I spend ~50 hours a week just in class and at work. Studying is done later.

For sure. Work and play have kept me busy. Enjoy school for now man. You'll look back after starting work and be happy knowing you had fun in school and while work responsibility was pretty chill. Not like I have a crazy senior job because I don't but it does tie up my time more than it used to. I'm on a 5:30am workout schedule to fit everything in.

I have a clutch with mechanical fan on my E36 M3, and it came with one broken fan blade. I have the basic (doesn't include Spal electrical fan) fan delete kit in the garage but haven't put it on yet. Guess I should do that soon! Been waiting for a block of open time because I want to replace the radiator at the same time.

No DIY.

The upfront cost if nothing is broken is simply fan + controller, which was $124 for me. If you go with a curved blade fan, which is slightly quieter, add on about $20. Overall, pretty inexpensive. However, it's a completely separate circuit; it's not integrated into the car and it does not use the car's temperature information.

I'm guessing that fan is really only used in hot climates, big uphill mountain passes, and track use. I don't think I saw my ZHP electric fan come on much.

Pretty much. I have it set to turn on during idle but I think I will tone it down a bit.

So the controller you use has no temperature based component ? It just turns on whenever you choose? Could you provide a link to the parts you used? Thanks man

It does, it's just not from the car, it's from it's own sensor.

I'll clarify. The fan controller comes with a switch and a sensor of its own. You stick this sensor between the fins of the radiator. It still runs off temperature, but it does not tap into the car's information, it runs off a provided switch that bolt onto the car somewhere. On that switch is a dial that sets what temperature the fan turns on at.

If that doesn't make sense I can get some pictures later to show you what I mean. The only thing you wire to the car is power.

I got the parts from a local speedshop, CAtuned. No link. Sorry. The one they have on their site is not the one I got, so I don't know what's going on.

My friend (eurosonic) fabricated a mount for me. You'll need to figure something out in terms of mounting the fan if you want to do this.

Dude...super jealous that you are basically neighbors with CATuned!! I want everything they build! Congrats on the new fan. If you can find one, grab an OEM fan. The function is superior to anything on the market. But that setup will work in a pinch.

The 951 has a toggle switch to manually turn my fans on, but they also function on their own. Pretty fun time figuring out what all the switches do...I felt like DeeDee from Dexter's Lab.

Correct. The OEM e46 electric fan. No reason for them to put Clutch fans on any of the cars really. I don't get it.

Is the stock wiring intact somewhere? Never reallly looked at an S54.

Thanks! Having them close is pretty cool. They have some nice stuff.

I have no intention of switching back to the other fan. No point anymore.

Well, you'd have to start tapping wires, but that's not the problem. I don't think it'll fit. The non-M electric fan is make for the non-M radiator, which is a different size. It won't even mount correctly, which defeats the whole point.

This setup uses a simple relay kit with a probe. It's what I've been using on my M3. It's a bulletproof solution. The fan mount is made by me which utilizes all of the factory connecting points on the factory radiator. Avetso is running an updated model of this:

That looks beauty though. I think I remember there being another fan in front on the other side of the radiator from the clutch fan. That's electric I believe...What's that for?

eurosonic

The fan in front of the radiator is an auxiliary fan that comes on with your AC. In addition it turns on when the stock mechanical fan isnt enough to cool the engine down.

Fiddled a bit with my fan settings to make it come on later. Engine wasn't getting much past 1/4 so I wanted to let it warm up a bit before it turned on. I got it set to turn on a little bit before 12 o'clock but that's with AC on and hood open.

Maybe I'll hit up CAtuned for the fan kit since it is local and I wouldn't mind doing the conversion. Just need to figure out the install since I won't have a bracket.

You could ask eurosonic if he'd make you one for a price. It's good stuff but I'm not sure if he'd want to.

Was wondering if I could get some help, guys. I have two really bad squeaks coming from the car. One is from the rod that goes in between all the throttle bodies (not sure what it's called). The other is from my front left (driver in US) control arm, I believe. Are there any known squeaks that happen often that I should look out for before I dive in? I've look at the LCA once already and I was pretty sure it was where the outer balljoint bolts onto the knuckle, but I may be wrong. It's really pissing me off. The tiniest imperfection in the road causes a squeak.

Johnmadd

I say ball joint if it's squeaky, that's from my non bmw experience. Can you make it squeak by making suspension bounce manually with the car off?

It's harder, but I can make the squeak when I hit that joint with a rubber mallet.

The rod that operates the valves in the throttle bodies is called the linkage. Just like in a shift selector.

You can grease it up if its squeaking. Just make sure you don't mess with the balance. Or you will have idling issues.

Feels great. I think that fixed my issue of the engine bogging down when engaging in first. Clutch feels much more linear now.

So after my $500 deductible I got $700 for the damage to my car. I'm gonna stop by a local shop and get an appraisal and look for more money from my insurance. I don't feel like that's fair compensation.

Also, given the ever-high value of the E46M3, and the tanking value of the ZHP (let's face it), I'm considering selling her come summer as I make my transition to UC Davis. I'm going to be doing a lot more driving starting then. I'd buy another ZHP with high mileage, probably salvage with the some damage, cheap as I can. It'd be a decent, cheap DD and I'd take my spare $10k and save it.

I love my M3, though. :( Being able to kick that rear end out is so addicting. It's not even funny.
