It's looking like the hurricane won't go up the coast that far...

Thinking of you and the farm this weekend! Be safe!

Thanks Justin, I think we're ready. I don't if you saw my thread about it... http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?19000-Hurricane-Matthew

New fuel lines and fuel jumper. Plus a new DME Temp Sensor. Hoping that when I replace these, she'll fire right up.

Lines replaced. Jumper replaced. Battery charged. No start.

Not getting any tach bounce while it's cranking, so that means that the speed and reference sensors are bad. They aren't cheap...but they should solve the problem. I haven't checked the timing yet, but it should be in spec.

She didn't start. Think I need to check the voltage on the speed and reference sensors. Not getting a tach bounce to indicate the sensors are reading the flywheel.

If not then I want to order a new DME from Rogue...$600, but it will be made in this decade...

Cps in my e30 and had the exact same diagnosis... but before I changed that I also asumed it was fuel issues. I did fuel pump, filter, some lines, and the fpr. I say just get a used or new cps.

I don't have a CPS, but the speed and reference sensors should help solve the problem. Buying a spare wire harness next week. Going to check the resistances to make sure it's within spec. Hopefully not too many repairs.

It's 50 here.
Justin, get yourself a heater that connects or a 20lb propane tank for your grille... they're around $100 for a dual element radiant or a forced air "salamander" heater. I could get my garage up to 80 degrees on the coldest day with the salamander

Happy New Year, my dudes and dudettes!

I've been busy with work and dealing with the crippling cold followed by 70 degree weather here to make up my mind and work on the car. But today was that day.

I replaced one of the sensors on the back of the block, test fire, no go. Moved on to the next one and got stuck. Fidgeted with the fucking rats nest alarm system for a bit before being harassed by an NRG door to door sales man. (Got locked in on some sweet rates for 12 months.) Tried the Speed sensor again and she wouldn't budge, mostly due to hoses, clamps and vac lines being in the way. I'll try again this weekend. Hoping for a start...She needs to move, So I can get Newjack's ZHP in the garage when we do 10 years worth of maintenance...Looking forward to working on a BMW again.

Cheers!

Speed sensor is still stuck :( I've tried all the easy things so far. It will spin in its housing, but cannot be pulled out. AFAIK it's original.

New approach. Going to remove the old engine and rebuild the other one. Tear down has begun.

This weather has been gorgeous. Day drinking, wearing shorts and a t-shirt, and wrenching in February. Good to be alive!

Turbo is a little bit fucked. Gonna replace it with a bigger one, obviously.

Took the hood off, removed the rest of the intake plumbing, half of the coolant lines, half of the engine harness and all of the vac lines to the engine.

Gonna drain the coolant and the oil this weekend hopefully. Probably start removing the exhaust too.

Goal for engine out by Feb 28.

Well we can add a new radiator to the list of new parts. I'm going to need to replace the radiator mount. It was in a crash it seems. Mangled to bits.

No pics because my hands were mostly filthy, but I was able to remove the battery and cables. The remainder of the wiring harness from the chassis. Serpentine belts are off. Starter, alternator and AC have been undone. I'm about halfway there working at a snail's pace.

Company got back to me about machining my spare block. That's almost underway!

Can't do much more until Newjack gets his ass up here for maintenance on his ZHP. So I can't take the wheels off yet since it needs to be pushed out of the garage...

Started tearing these apart. Found a guy to strip clean and powder coat them for me. Hoping the lips can be repaired.

Sent the Gottis to the wheel repair shop. For just about $1100 I'll have some sick ass wheels. I broke one of the barrels on the a rear, so it's being sent to a guy in South Carolina that will try to replicate it, before I make a phone call to France for a authentic replacement.

Wheel Hardware is being stripped in some apple cider vinegar. Going to polish them when they come out.

Fun fact. This 1987 Porsche uses the same power steering reservoir as the e46...And it sucks just as much, so it's going bye-bye and replaced with a manual steering rack from an early 944. There were two versions; standard and sport. I have the later and with a quick 2.5 turns lock to lock should be a real bitch in the parking lots...But a blast on the open road. Road feel is said to be tremendous compared to the PS racks. Can't wait to drive it!

Four more steps and then she'll be engineless. Then I need to put it back together so I can send it to the shop for a new core support and some various encased nuts to be rewelded.

You couldn't get the exhaust separated while you were removing the engine?

No room to access the bolts with the right tools. Everything is rusted together. I bought a 33gal compressor and an air hammer/chisel and blasted the nut holding the waste gate to the torque tube.

Front subframe replaced. Control arms mounted. Manual steering rack and new tie-rods installed. Just need to put the wheels on and tow it to the shop to get the core support repaired and somewhat aligned.

Engine was shipped on Friday 07/07. Should have it by this Friday! Probably won't touch it until late August. I'm getting on a plane July 27th and exploring Italy and the Mediterranean for three weeks. Going to have the car in the shop for that period of time. Clean the garage and get everything sorted out for the build.

Cats out of the bag now! Everything arrived today! Had to check out the haul.

104 mm Wössner pistons, wrist pins, and piston rings.
Darton M.I.D. sleeved block. Bored to 104 mm from 100 mm.
Carrillo rods.
Forged 2.5 Litre crankshaft.
Head from other engine is a direct swap.
Need to get a Cometic head gasket, ARP head studs and then seal everything up. Progress should be fast when I return from vacation.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170712/8f30ca68eb305e005aea8f5393dabb54.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170712/fd795116b0dfbb48ea690ebf42d48299.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170712/8a3ae4388b93e733c9c71b903790447b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170712/6af298989137c9cecadab32236f239db.jpg

Long-overdue update.

The porker has been sitting in the middle of my garage for two years now open and exposed to garage happenings when I can find the space. Per a friend's recommendation, I picked up some vehicle skates on Amazon for $109.99.

Quickly got busy with clearing out the garage of it's accumulation of BMW/Volvo/Porsche/VW parts and shopvac'd the floor and walls, of a million spider egg sacks and webs. Threw away a lot of old beer from work related pick ups and some old papers from my previous position as a merchandiser/display guy.

Cleared enough space that I could get the jack under the car and put the wheels on the skates. And then I graciously moved 2800lbs of steel and aluminum off into the corner to be forgotten about until I can build the 2.7L engine. Finally freeing up space to put the VW in the garage to work with my toolbox right next to me.

Definitely need to find space for the three sets of wheels and then get the lawn equipment into a proper garden shed.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190329/46ca02ae9c22996fc9ac293a5cd2e482.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190329/83edfcaa4879ee419cebb180a2cf1ae1.jpg
