Seems like a cool little tool. Double nut method could be a cheaper alternative but I don't know the condition of the studs etc.
The studs are in good shape, so I want to see if I can preserve them otherwise I will go with Raceware studs.

Parts car update. Pulled the intake manifold and all associated vac lines the other day. Today I drained the coolant, pulled nose panel, the cooling fans and the radiator. Also I removed the engine harness and the starter. Removed the 6 of 8 header bolts...couldn't get two off because the studs are coming out with them. Nothing a little PB Blaster can't solve.

So the engine will hopefully be pulled this week and disassembly will begin next week. Gotta get my organization plan in line before I pull any more bolts off the block. Ziplock bags and a sharpie should do the trick. No pics tonight. Was bustin it out and my hands were filthy.

Ordered the engine management system today...$1,400 and a 2-3 week back order :( The guy who was making them transferred the sales ownership of his product to Lindsey Racing and they can't keep them on the shelf. The tune has been silent for over 6 months and in March they just announced them for sale again.

So my car won't start, I'm working overnights and to top it all off, I have to probably wait a month for the management to get here...Looking into a junk daily driver for the time being...

Thanks dude. I am really interested in the 2015 Golf TDI. Something that is from this fucking decade and is offered with a manual transmission. My mother doesn't mind that. And my payment would only go up $300/Month more to own both cars. She would drive it when the Porsche is back on the road and then possibly get rid of the Odyssey next year.

Till then getting a rental car and waiting for some good news. Maybe pulling the pan and dropping the pistons to re-ring them just to get it to turn over for the remaining months I have the engine. Gonna take at least 6-8 weeks for the custom pistons to be made.

Nolan loves his '12 Golf TDI. It was tuff to find one with MT and without 200k+ miles on it. Go used if you can find one and let someone else take the hit on depreciation.

Yeah my mother said she likes it! So there's win number one. Now I just need to figure out how to best get the 944 engine to fire up. Think that dropping the pan and undoing the conrods and just re-ring the pistons or replace with used pistons the the shop may have on hand. Hoping and praying.

It's a thing of beauty. To drain it you spin the petcock to start the flow of collected oil. Just run some hose to it and drain into a water bottle and dispose correctly.

Any indication of why that valve burned?

TheFinanceGuy
05-19-2015, 09:31 AM
Typically valves are burnt as a function of too much heat and or burning carbon/oil.

Might want to check the turbo to make sure the piece of the valve 'melted' away and didn't break off.

Hornung418
05-19-2015, 09:40 AM
It was burned through. Not broken off.

That cylinder was running lean and burned it's way through. I was also burning coolant for whatever reason. The pitting in the head was welded up and decked flat.

Never mentioned it, but my engine management and MAF conversion have arrived. All $1400 worth of it. As soon as the car is running I will then take a weekend to install. It will run at any boost setting and has 16 different maps to choose from!! That's a lot. And upgrading to 3.0L is as simple as changing the chip. Only complaint is that it uses a K&N oiled filter...but it gets sucked right into the turbo, so...

So this Sunday i had planned on heading to the garage and putting the engine on the stand...go to car and attempt to start, click nothing. So I panic and think it could be the ignition, so i dive into the dashboard.

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/09/55515a781b80b0f9f3a110dc882a9059.jpg

It's hot as shit that afternoon and I'm in a small car, not having a fun time. I get a call from a friend and we walk through what it could be. I mention the jumble of aftermarket alarm wires that popped out from under the dash and he tells me to look in there.

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/09/b9ca0e5eb8618f14f76f18165cf8449a.jpg

This shit is the bane of my existence. Find out that there's a spade terminal that had become unplugged. Plug it in and the car starts right up...such bullshit. So removing the dash and instrument cluster, I found two broken body clips that that hold the dash bezel. And lost an instrument cluster bolt. There are four total...so its not flopping about in there.

In my haste to put the car together for my 6am shift, I put the wheel on one spline to the right. So it was crooked as I drove straight down the road. I also triggered the airbag light...so that was fun finding the correct plug standing on my head in the passenger foot well.

Last nights progress in the thunderstorm/flash flooding we had:

Drove to shop in the dry. The storm passed right over top of me. The garage was nice and dry though. Part of the reason I went lol.

Planned on fixing my steering wheel alignment and finally getting the engine on the stand.

Both were a success.

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/09/5fd76412161362c0bd776328fd350b32.jpg

Going to bag, tag, and store all of my nuts and bolts as well as all the ancillaries. Gonna be a fun afternoon.

Rogue M-Tune installed today. Running the stock injectors for now. Will upgrade to the supplied 80#/hour when I install the new engine.

I'll have pics and videos tomorrow, it was quite an ordeal adding wiring to the existing harness. Never soldered before...but I watched 62 hours of film this morning I think I did okay.

The car started on the first go, so I don't think I fucked anything up. Only issue I'm getting is the engine stutters at 6k rpm, which is 680 rpm short of the new red line. Anyway, sorry for no pictures. But you'll have them tomorrow. :cool

Here's the new engine bay!

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/01/0c99a6e00207f105fd57ee9875bfbaba.jpg

I have to install the injectors...it's come to that. The stock injectors are old and definitely don't flow like new. So the 80#/hr will be installed this Sunday. Have to keep my foot out of it, WOT just results in backfires and it bucks like I was just entered into a bull riding competition...

Now for the spare engine build!

This is the fabled balance shaft. It's sole purpose is to counter rotate with the upper balance shaft to cancel the secondary vibrations found in all inline four cylinders.

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/01/2db30e8a89f79c5f0cdfa5e0a0969fc7.jpg

Then I took the oil pan off to find a pretty clean crank shaft!

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/01/a23d3cd69fa4885fcd5cbcdbb8bd53b7.jpg

Everything is tidy so far! Should be torn down by next Sunday, save the studs which need a stud extractor.

Thanks, Gents! I can't wait for Sunday for some hungover maintenance.

Shooting for more engine tear down on the spare. Fuel pressure confirmation/possible adjustment to 43psi or 3.0bar. And then replacing the fuel filter.

If it still runs like ass at WOT I'm going to try and clean the TPS.
Possible bad seals on the throttle body (which I have a rebuild kit for) allow oil to fill the TPS on boost. But it didn't do this with the old tuning, so I'm not sure why it does it now. Following the possible seal rebuild, I'll plumb the OCC into the system to delete the existing hard pipes and rubber hose ends. This should eliminate any oil being burned in the A/F mixture which lowers the octane, which can cause pre-ignition and detonation.

Lots of simple things to trouble shoot before I swap the injectors. That's my last resort. However when I do, I have a feeling this car will be a land rocket.

Here's a friend's new track toy!!

So how did you hit the dog with your Porsche Justin?

Sorry to see...
Driving home the same way I always do, looking out for deer as they've been spotted a few times crossing the road. Didn't expect to hit and kit a dog who who was crossing the road in a rural area. Eighties sealed beam tech sucks massive cock. She came running out of the treeline behind her partner in crime, who ran off when the accident happened. I struck her square on my front end and she rolled up on to the hood and windshield and was launched forward and bounced and rolled about 50 yards. The saddest part was me looking out my open window as I'm stopping and seeing it happen. It just twists your stomach up in knots.

She was a German Shorthaired Pointer, no collar or tags. Called 911 and let them know what happened and they called Animal Control to clean up the mess. Hopefully she was chipped, I'm actively looking for the owner via FB local lost and found pets page.

I'm okay physically but emotionally shaken obviously...I've accidentally ended a life.

Pics from the scene. I'll spare you the deceased.

For now, I banged the dents out and am in search of a new header panel. This one is toast, bit it will do the job for now. I also cleaned the front end, I used purple power to strip the wax and clean the gunk. Then I used Mcguire's quick detail on the hood and fenders. The rest will stay dirty till I have time to care about my dead ass paint.

Found a hook up for new fog lights. With the broken housings I can make them into euro spec. So that's cool.

Also found a great condition turbo bumper cover in primer all tabs intact. Going to work on finding a header panel for a good price and then hack it up to allow more airflow into the intercooler. Last step is the spare hood. Going to shoot for something like this:

This evening while it is currently flash flooding, I was at the garage tearing down the engine. Tonight's achievements were the removal of the crank bolt and the associated pulleys. Then I took off the friction driven oil pump (which looks like a dong, BTW). And before it got hairy with the weather, my buddy Spencer helped me with pulling the rod and pistons for cyl2 and cyl3. Had to close up shop when the rain went from a slight drizzle to a full on deluge.

Tomorrow I am going out to pick up the fog lights, $275 used and one has a crack on the glass...but that's better than the ones that were on the car when I bought it last August. I will be converting them to Euro spec and wire in 100w DRLs and 55w fogs. Hella H4s are being sourced by a coworker who is also a motorcycle mechanic and gets deep discounts. And to round it all out, I'm possibly buying a bumper cover tomorrow too.

Like I said earlier, the last thing to source is the header panel. Cheers!

The bumper is basically brand new, needs a final sand and a primer coating then paint. $200. Thinking about spraying it orange RS orange and respraying the rear bumper and diffuser the same color...and print some Turbo S script decals for the sides.

Moving on to fog lights, $275 for the pair...basically new except for a hairline crack on the inside of the glass. Just in need of a good polish and laminex application. Euro conversion inbound next month.

And finally the find of the fucking year!

Last thing I need to do is pull the studs and a pesky, stripped hex key bolt that just doesn't want to break free. Even with copious amounts of PB Blaster and vice grips, she won't budge. Going to spring for some grabbit sockets to remove the bolt. We used them with success on Newjack's Tensioner pulley bolt when he stripped out the torx key with a hex key.

Shipping the block out in two weeks!

An hour of fussing with vice grips in the high heat and humidity with no air movement, I finally got that bastard of a bolt broken free and extracted. I have a three day weekend ahead of me starting Sunday, so I'm going to take advantage of that and torch and extract the studs. Hopefully the block will be shipped out on Tuesday, then the waiting game begins.

The oil pump is shaped like a dong...which would often be hairy. If the dong fails then a bearing would likely be spun resulting in the need for complete tear down.

Thanks, John. The conversion is not easy at all, the whole front clip needs to be changed over new fenders and a whole bunch of fabrication. I like the 968, but I wouldn't go through the trouble to convert a 944 into one.

I've seen two threads of the process and it looks like a nightmare. Better off just trying to find one in good condition. The engines are a bit more complicated too, so that's an extra learning curve.

I think you're confused. At this point, Porsche was the commanding force in the partnership. The 924 was developed jointly with VW, but with the introduction of the 944 in 1982, it was all Porsche. And nothing about the 968 was Volkswagen related.

Not true, there were a few parts still found in VW's on the 944. door handles, interior components, im sure theres more. But yea I know the 924 was basically a VW and the 944 was more of a true porsche.

Well one day back home and I'm already back in the shop. Today was tough. Hot and humid and no airflow in my corner of the shop.

Sprayed PB BLASTER on the studs a week before I left for Erie, PA last Wednesday. So today's task was to try and remove them. I used the Double Nut Technique it proved very useful on 7, possibly 8, of them. The two on the left will definitely need to be heated to get freed from the factory loctited. Haven't tried the right most one. Mom called me to come home for dinner.

7/10 studs out of the block.

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/27/ccb16d98159f8e399e57d9ca59aa56a5.jpg

The remaining studs.

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/27/0f38a1d4262f5b496854839b01391da2.jpg

It took me three hours to get this far. Very hard and laborious w/o the right tool. But I don't need to spend $100 for a stud removal tool, maybe later in life.

Cheers!

Just seeing this. Yeah that's what it had and what was very popular. When you switch from AFM to MAF the computer needs to have extra calculations and be recoded to suit the needs of the injectors. So the kit while expensive, will allow the engine to function better at all points of the rev range.

A modern tune in a BMW is still cheaper than the Rogue M-tune ($1400).

Just wanted to note, Justin let me drive his Porsche this past weekend. Hands down the scariest car I have ever driven.

In the ZHP, I have torque and power sub 2k rpms. In the Porsche you don't have any power, until a few revs later and all of a sudden your bouncing off the limiter and your head is against the seat. It didn't help driving at night through the dark windy roads, but I still had a blast. Thanks Justin.

This was a lot tougher to install than I anticipated. The hardest part was removing the stupid USA metal bumper. The fiberglass bumper is two bolts for the each of the brackets and two bolts for the bumper. Quite a bit lighter than the metal US bumper too!! Needs a good wash and a polish on the muffler now.

Next step: Get the stickers I need for the sides. Looks like I can get orange for $55 shipped from Suncoast Porsche.

Thanks, Gents. Hoping to offload some parts and pocket a couple hundred this weekend. That will fund the next interior project. Found several leads for a crack free airbag delete dashboard. Someone local to me is asking $300, but the bottom is unfinished as it was a different color. Planning on deleting the lower console and turning it into an outlaw style Porsche.

Unfortunately for resale value, I will be saving all of these parts. 951 values are on the rise! And in order to retain the value the interior needs to be complete. But I'm excited to get cracking on the removal process of the rear seats, those are being sold for $300 to a friend with a 944S. I wont worry about those as the seat is useless anyway.

Well...all the Turbo Twists I keep finding are the cool hollow spoke wheels but the offsets are et45 for the wide body cars which is 15mm too low and will rub on the rear coil overs.

The Sport Techno 1s have the right dimensions, and the right offsets. 295 RE-11As, here I come!!

Currently dealing with this trying to remove some bushings from an e28 RTA...Two pound plastic sledge did the damage. Nothing broken, but it sure hurts like a SOB!

Hopefully buying a truck/SUV before next month...just waiting on sellers to get back to me :-)

Nothing good comes easy though...there is a massive coolant leak from the back of the block. Probably heater hose related. Of all times to shit the bed. No pics. Too frustrated to document.

We drove the car anyway...and this thing fuckin rips. Easily over 320 whp with conservative boost levels.

No progress on spare engine. Using an inductor tomorrow to heat the studs on the bottom of the block. That should brake them free. Then it gets sent off to finally be cleaned and over-bored.

Yeah it's a bummer. I haven't received any return contact with the potential sellers. It was never listed, but she mentioned that she had an FJ80 and it might be for sale. So wishful thinking on my part I guess. I am still looking for an economical commuter for the mileage accumulation. I'm still around 116k. But I want to keep the chassis in the best shape that I can.

Dug deep into the engine bay to find my leak. That piece of plastic coats $128 and the hoses cost a total of $100+ !! What the fuck, Porsche?!

Bought the parts I need on Pelican Parts, both FCP and ECS didn't have all the products I needed in stock and they wanted only slightly less than the dealer.

Soon I will have coolant and heat! Just in time for winter :)

good job, justin. those bits look a lot like audi parts i've encountered on the old C4-chassis audis. granted, it's an evolution of an audi engine so that makes sense - and these parts always get brittle and fail on the audis, too.

can you buy a length of coolant-safe silicone hose to replace that rubber stuff? that would certainly be cheaper than the OE stuff.

Thanks, Peter!

I opted to go with aftermarket rubber replacements and a Meanco Bundy heater control valve. Spent $85 for all the parts I need.

I think I'm going to reseal my throttle body while its off the car. The process seems in-depth and should provide a nice challenge while I have the parts to do it. The kit is from Arnnworks and can be found at this link provided.

Paid $100...ugh that's expensive for some old parts, but what the hell. Shit ain't getting any easier to find. With these installed, I will remove the sunroof motor and gear sets, saving about 10lbs. But most importantly, no annoying 30 year old electronics to deal with.

Next up is my airbag delete :)

Have a friend with a contact in Japan. Getting a MOMO MOD.07 comp wheel and a Italovolanti three spoke wheel in an undisclosed color to provide an awesome look to my interior when I'm not driving hard. (On track) the Yen to USD exchange rate is in our favor so wheels are cheap and easy to import.

I am working up a deal for a crack-free, non-airbag dashboard for my Transmission and cash on top from a local seller. I already bought a non airbag switch assembly from a guy in GA for $35. Should be here tomorrow. Momonhub arrives next week. Super pumped to be making progress on this thing!

Got to drive my car yesterday. It was a great success! The battery was dead so there was a good time trying to get that to start. Luckily it's been working well for the two days I've driven it. Not really, because we work pretty close to each other, but it is definitely less enjoyable.

So I got as far as pulling the clutch slave and soft line out. The Master is unclipped from the pivot arm and both bolts holding it to the firewall removed. Need to pull the hard line tonight and hopefully it's an easy reinstall. Gotta bench bleed the lines because the slave cylinder doesn't like to return to full.

When I was under the dash I could visually see the master cylinder and the dust boot just leaking fluid all over the arm and down the front of the carpet area. When I pulled the slave out, the soft line had a pin hold leak and had a stripe of fluid baked onto it from the exhaust heat. The slave pushrod was visibly deformed from 30 years of abuse.

So all in all, money well spent, just a very annoying process.

Clutch is finally firm again, but the slave had to be reused because I damaged the new one when the piston pin jumped out of the cup and turbo-fucked the piston. Was not a good time.

That was my first car. An 84 Guards Red. Cloth interior. Was something I knew I needed to drive again after I sold it. They are getting very cheap to buy. But maintenance is still a pain, but the NA is a lot more accessible. Highly recommend hunting one down in good shape if you want one! Spend the money to avoid the heartbreak.

Well...bad news for me and my friends. We've been evicted from our garage space, by our landlady. She's been fined and will face court hearings for infractions with Zoning and Permitting in Harford County, MD. This puts us out of our space where we keep 9 cars currently and three of them are able to drive.

The allegations that three friends and three more acquaintances are running a business out of the shop, and that someone is living upstairs, are the zoning boards reason for kicking us out. Idk about you guys, but we are the most unsuccessful business that never existed.

This whole space was shady as fuck from the get go, but we never felt what we were doing was illegal. However, her reputation in the neighborhood has given them an opportunity to royally fuck her, and in turn us, over.

Looking for a place to put a lift and space for parking inside. This is gonna be a shit show. Everything has to be gone by Thursday. Zoning is coming to inspect the place that day.

Just needed to vent...

I have my engine and stand, two sets of wheels, two bumper covers, miscellaneous stuff, my 951 and the parts car to get off the property.

The graciousness of a family friend, if I clean half of their garage, I can put the 951 in there until I can get it to my own space. As for the parts car, I'm going to pull anything and everything of value off of it, cut the chassis in quarters and take it for scrap metal. That will be the end of that story.

Stay tuned for updates.

Going to build shelves for the totes to sit on the length of the left and back walls. Stack my wheels on the top shelf. Put the bumper in the upstock. Sell the fenders hood and front bumper cover from my first BMW and get rid of the dorm room stuff.

Then everything will be cataloged and listed for sale. That is not a necessity for my car.

Yeah...we did a lot of case searching we have a lot of dirt on the owner and her son. Her daughter is in okay shape, but her son has made some very poor decisions; drinking and driving leading to an accident where the victim was left paralyzed. And he's done some jail time. Her husband divorced her and then died from a heart attack (which we knew about). But yeah...glad to be moving out even if the location and rent was prime for automobile fuckery.

I'm looking for real estate property in the southern PA region and potentially in southern MD with garage space. I want to buy a lift of my own and create a retreat where I can do my own maintenance as if nothing has changed.

And as a heads up, I've applied for a position with Priority 1 Automotive (BMW, Porsche, Mini, and Maserati) in their parts dept.

So I picked these up on Tuesday. For the low low price of $700. In dire need or refinishing when all is said and done I will have maybe $2000 into these wheels and they will be worth much more than that when finished.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160408/68703d9b93e090f3fdf7b95d8904879d.jpg

Test fitted them today. My clearance on the front brake calipers was a major concern when I bought these because I'd read that 17s are the smallest diameter that will fit.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160408/0c65901880b7a668000687d88caad22e.jpg

Well the barrel clears the caliper and no interference on rotation. However, the mounting surface isn't deep enough to clear the faces, so spacers are necessary up front.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160408/a2ef07ef64576760a2c414089f531031.jpg

The fronts are 16x8 with a zero inch lip. Super funky looking but it will work.

Rears are 16x9 and there is no clearance issues with the rear calipers as the rotor hat extends beyond the caliper.

Lips are being sent to Spintech, LLC in Florida for bend and curbage removal. Then polished. Should be the most difficult part of the process.

Stay tuned for updates.

Thanks, guys. I am ready to send the engine off to be bored over and honed. I'm going to have the machine shop pull the bottom studs and then order the necessary parts for a quick assembly. Hopefully, the block hasn't warped while it was on the stand. (A thing these engines apparently do...)

A bump in compression and displacement should put me in the 300hp range. A conservative bump over the standard 250 HP from the Turbo S vehicles.

Finally! You're going to enjoy having your own space, eh?

A few florescent lights and you'll be good to go for nighttime beers and wrenching. ;)

There are more lights. I just thought the lighting from the opener was perfect for this shot 😉

nice! after i saw the first pic i thought the same thing as rob. :) but then i saw your post. i would also suggest painting the walls white - the florescent light will bounce off the white and will actually make it brighter - 'free' light. :) a bright place to work is always better.

Gonna put up boards so I can paint wood instead of have the blocks soak up endless amounts of paint.

All clean...kinda. she's gonna need a paint job. Clear on hood is peeling off in sheets.

My eyes hurt just thinking about it - lol

But then again, I've always liked darkness :shifty

As soon as I get the coin for the electrical work, I'll be hard wiring four 8' fixtures into the garage and one 4' over my bench.

Damn, I've done a lot of electrical wiring over the years.... If I was still up there in Jersey, I'd be stopping by to help you do that...

I have to upgrade the service from 100amps to 200amps. Then all the loose wiring needs to be cleaned up and then all the outlets will be brought up to code. It's something I could do, but would rather pay the professional to do it. Estimate is $2400 for full service.

Yea, that's a lot of work... I thought you were just rewiring the garage...

Started removing the interior last week. Struggling with the passenger seat. All the bolts are different so I'm just drilling them out. Hoping I can work this weekend through hurricane Matthew.

It's looking like the hurricane won't go up the coast that far...
