I find myself contemplating getting a set of BC Racing BR Type Coilovers. The quality and adjustability for the price is very impressive.
I spoke to Charlie the other day to get some feedback on these. Charlie runs these on both his ///M and ZHP and loves them! He is going on 4 years with these on his ///M and 1 year on his ZHP!
Charlie's Review:
If you would ask me to be completely honest with you and ask me if I would go back to these? My answer would be a resounding "Hell yeah!!!" All in all, these coilovers cost me $995 shipped directly to my door.
I'm impressed with their build quality and longevity. For street driving and spirited driving, these are awesome. I take corners hard too (20mph cloverleaf highway merges going as fast as 60mph) and they still perform I feel so planted with these that I'm confident going into corners.
BC Racing Coilover Suspension Kit - BMW 3 Series (E46)
The BC BR Type RA Series Coilover Kit features 30 levels of damping force adjustment, combined with full length height adjustment allowing an extremely low ride height, and pillowball upper mounts.
The BC BR Type RA Series Coilover Kit comes with Pillowball upper mounts in the front, and rubber upper mounts in the rear, combining the properties of both types of upper mounts. This setup is designed for drivers who look for the ultimate balance of comfort and superior performance, coupled with a smooth and forgiving overall ride quality. This makes the BC BR Type RA Series Coilover the ideal choice for street, circuit and tarmac rally use. For most of those vehicles equipped with McPherson Struts, the front pillowball upper mounts are automatically upgraded to Camber adjustable upper mounts.
The BC BR Type RA Series Coilover Kit utilizes enlarged shock absorber cartridges with specially designed shock pistons and rods to provide a broad range of damping force. The newly developed lubricant oil used in all BC Racing shock absorber cartridges assists in minimizing aeration and cavitation. The beveled edge design on the lower locking ring ensures and optimum seal with the lower mount and prevents the lower locking ring from unseating.

Looks like a well priced option for coilovers. I was hoping to pick up a used set of ST KWs here local but the seller on CL won't respond. These are now a top contender. Thanks!

Good to here! So the M3 set just has the stiffer springs? The 3 series setup comes with Spring Rates of F: 7kg and R: 8kg. I wonder what the ride difference is between the two?
Paging Charlie: What spring rates are you running?
cakM3
08-24-2014, 01:42 PM
Gary,
On the ZHP I'm running 8KG front and 12KG rear (standard M3 setup). On my ///M I'm running 14KG front and 12KG rear. I'm running much stiffer springs in front because they're about 2" shorter than the stock springs since I have lowered my ride height that much more on the ///M :)
The roads here are really bad in places so I opted for a much stiffer spring rate for the ZHP compared to the stock 3-series for non-M's. The ZHP has a very solid ride and I absolutely love it :thumbsup Hope this answers your question Gary :)

Gary, here are the differences between the stock M3 springs that came with my kit when I purchased it for my ///M and the shortened much stiffer springs I now have installed ;)
The shorter springs are 2" shorter...provided by BC Racing, of course ;)

I'll be staying with the original springs for my ZHP....the roads up here are bad... and I get no rubbing at all running the original M3 setup :) The M3 however does rub slightly when hitting the stupid huge bumps on the road up in Mass....I mean I have to really slow down on the highway so I don't rub too badly....other than that, the ride is awesome. I'm just much more careful while driving the M3 now :thumbsup

I too am rocking BC racing coils. I'm on 8/12 like devlin except I'm on swift springs instead of factory bc racing. I'm actually really content with the way they handle, I drive them on full stiff pretty much every day and it's not too rough at all and the car handles like a champ.

Half stiff felt too soft for me personally. It felt like the car wanted to float around over dips on the highway. My rear spring is really short so I have the strut adjusted all the way to its shortest and I still can't set preload.

In for a group buy but a couple questions first.
1. Does the lower spring rate contribute to or make the car have that "ricer" bounce? I don't know exactly what causes that bouncy look on some lowered cars. I do have it and I can't figure out if it is my springs or my settings on my coils. I have that ricer bounce and it pisses me the hell off, especially at night :(
2. Are the rear struts threaded and adjustable? Meaning, can I completely thread the strut down into the housing to drop the rear independent of the spring? I can do that now with the set of coils I have but my rears just won't go down any further and I still have a raked look to the car where I want to just sit level front to rear. See the picture of the rear struts on the link below to see what I mean. I can thread the strut down into the strut housing but only "so much", where as I really want to thread it down even more.
I am running this setup (for non-M3) F2 (Function and Form) http://m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=271370

Good question....not sure but I would guess the lower spring rate will contribute to a more bouncy ride. On my daily commute there's a bridge I have to drive on that is long and bumpy and I feel every bump but my ZHP doesn't bounce. The car is steady as I drive over that bridge and my ZHP is lowered...

There is a lot of adjustment for the rear struts (top strut pictured). I haven't had any issues and had a level setup on my ZHP initially but lowered it and decided to have just a little rake...

I miiiiiight have that ricer bounce, and I don't really know what causes it. Then again this is my first coilover setup so your definition of "ricer bounce" may be different than what my car feels like.
Also for me, the rear strut doesn't adjust down far enough. I have a ton of room on the spring adjuster to lower the car and my lack of adjustment on the strut isn't limiting me from going lower.

If you're struggling with the ricebounce you are underdamped, turn the socks stiffer until it goes away. It takes some trial and error. Go by one click at a time, it might not need much. Structural dynamics are tricky lol

You might be overdamped then. It will 'bounce' too but not oscillate up and down after the bounce. If you're full stiff it might be bouncing on the tires too. My suggestion is to turn it all the way down and turn it up until it dampens well.

I started at full soft and went from there and the bounce only got better as I cranked it up but it's still there on full stiff. I'll try turning it down to 20 and going from there.

I had a set of Tein SS coilovers on my previous car that was daily driven during the winter here in Virginia. Granted it is not as a bad of a winter here but every spring I would clean them up and make sure there was no problems with the seal for the shock, camber plates were clean and greased and etc. IMO coilovers do require a bit more work then a traditional spring/strut set-up as far as maintenance.

I also have access to a heated stall at the auto hobby shop here at the Naval base where I work so I can wash my ZHP on a weekly basis. When I wash my car during cold winter months, I wash my undercarriage and coilovers to knock off the road salt. Keeping the car clean during winter is key :thumbsup

Hey guys.
Looks like BC does not do group buys.
Sad face I know. But my contact down here can still order them for anyone who is interested and the price should still be under 1k shipped to your door.
I got them overnight but I am close to BC's NA headquarters so I am not sure if everyone will get next day or not.

From FCP:
"My name is Gareth Foley and I help manage the FCP Euro catalog. I specifically manage the BMW catalog but I also oversee many of the performance parts as well. I just added the adjustment extenders to FCP Euro. Thank you for pointing out that we didn't have them listed. The extenders can be found with the link below:
Adjustment Extenders
http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/br-series-coilover-kit-adjustment-extenders
Anthony DiMartino from our sales department has already send you an email in regards to what you are looking for and he will also assist in any discounts if possible. If you see anything missing from the site please feel free to contact me directly to let me know. I am also happy to assist with any inquiries on coilover specs or custom spring rates. I run the BR series coilovers on my E39 and have done so for the last 3 years. They have been rock solid and I have put close to 30,000 miles on them since. I will also likely put them on my M3 in a few years as well.
In regards to the E46 front strut mount reinforcement plates I think you will be fine when trying to adjust camber using the included camber plates with the BR series coilovers. I know of many people who use the reinforcement plates with other styles of camber plates and they don't have any adjustability issues."

I just don't see the use for strut tower reinforcement plates. Then again I don't track the car and I use a strut tower brace. Maybe those that do track their cars need the plates, but I would think that those people who do, also run a good strut brace anyway. At some point I would think redundancy kicks in to the point of being completely moot/nill.

That's why I bought some, I remember seeing these photos. Plus they are only approx $20.
Highly recommended for vehicles with upgraded suspensions.
The E46 front strut towers are notoriously weak. This reinforcement plate comes from the poor road package and artificially adds another layer of metal to reinforce the strut mounting point on the chassis. If you drive with fresh suspension components at standard ride heights you likely won't have an issue. However, the problem can occur with performance suspensions and this is where these reinforcement plates can help you prevent expensive damage to your E46. Blown shocks and stiff suspensions will cause the sheet metal to pop up due to more energy being transferred.
FYI- These codes don't work

I would.
The money of any suspension kit is contained within the damper. These dampers cannot effectively dampen springs as well as other shocks.
It has probably been proven on shock dynos, but even when you ride in cars with these shocks, there is a difference.
Not hating on the suspension, because it is well priced. Just know what you're getting

Why is that? What is it missing?
Avetiso

Why is that? What is it missing?
Not necessarily missing anything, rather that as the quality of the parts increases, so does cost, which is why other suspension is more expensive. For example, if you look at spring compression graphs for BC springs and other Taiwanese coilovers, you'll see that they can be as much as +-50 pounds per inch off of their advertised rate; that, compared to Swift springs, which test within +-5lbs per inch.
Then there is the damper itself, which is the main part.
I don't think he's saying it's a bad coilover, but that more expensive coilovers are more expensive for a reason and that that premium is worth it when it comes to ride quality.

Outside of spring rates, most track suspension has the adjustability to also be used on the street, and with better results.

But will the dampening rate matter less on a DD or would it still be something to be wary of and therefore better to spend for more quality, or is that just an issue for racing?

Depending on the spring rate, you need a damper that can effectively dampen that spring without over or under oscillation

i do not like the 1-year warranty, however - to me, it says something about the quality of the components. when you look at bilstein, they lifetime-warranty their dampers (to the original purchaser). THAT says something about confidence in their product.

Yes, this is the only drawback to getting the BC Racing coilovers but their pricing is killer. I have had these on my M3 going on 4 years now and have been pleased with their performance overall. :)
I agree that with Bilstein's you have their lifetime warranty and that is one thing to consider when purchasing coilovers. I agree with your statement Peter :thumbsup
thanks charlie. positive first-hand experience is always a good thing! i agree on the pricing.
the ST coilovers are around the same price and i really liked their product when i used it on my last audi, albeit the rear spring rates were much too soft - that is one nice thing about the BC 'BR' kit for the M3 - the 8k/12k (446F/670R) rates seem very well-suited to the ZHP's factory handling balance (just maybe a tad stiffer).
i'm on the fence between this product and the bilstein 'B12' kit (bilstein sport dampers - which are shorter than stock - and eibach springs). the adjustability of the BC's appeals to my fiddly nature, but the 'set and forget' and lifetime warranty of the bilstein setup likely aligns with my wife's desires - less time spent fiddling with the car. :) haha.

When I ordered my set for my '03 ZHP from Ray (smilez) they came labeled for an e46 M3.
"E46 M and non M are the same kit. We send the M now because the spring rates work better with both M and non M versions. The only difference is the 12k rear spring as opposed to the 10k rear spring on the I-02 non-M kit.

Good info but there is a"Swift Spring" upgrade. This option runs approx $350 more.
I do believe you are going from a Progressive rate spring to a Linear spring.
http://blog.modbargains.com/linear-rate-vs-progressive-springs-whats-best-4-street/
NOW OFFERING SWIFT SPRING UPGRADE OPTION
SWIFT Bronze Metric Coilover Springs are highly linear, fewer winding springs that reduce unsprung weight and increase performance. Swift springs are special order and assembled onto your shocks with proper preload. Please allow 3 weeks.
for more information look here. This details the H5S.TW material that sets Swift apart from the competition. We suggest Swift springs on any vehicle that will see the track due to the unsprung weight and predictability. The dailiy driven street cars these springs are probably overkill.
BC Coilovers are now available with SWIFT springs as additional option for your BCs. For those of you who demand a higher quality spring for street and track.
These are the flagship product that made Swift a regular name in some of the most prestigious race series around the world. From Formula Nippon to Le Mans, these innovative products continue to make Swift a staple in the racing industry.
Through the input of numerous race teams from across the globe, it was apparent that there was still room to improve upon the conventional racing spring. Swift engineers spent countless hours conducting research, developing and testing the springs in order to create the perfect racing spring.
The Swift engineers and in-house metallurgists were able to formulate a unique blend of metals they have named H5S.TW, this unique alloy hosts a wide range of benefits and virtually zero drawbacks. The end result was the creation of the Swift Metric Coilover springs.
The Swift Spring upgrade at the time of purchase with the initial set of BC Racing Coilovers is $260.00 on top of standard coilovers.
Swift Spring Technical Advantages
Swift proprietary material along with advanced cold winding process allows Swift springs to be manufactured using a thinner wire diameter with fewer coils making the springs the lightest magnetic metal springs available on the market.
Swift Accuracy
Swift Metric Coilover springs feature the highest linearity of any spring out there. Along with the widest stroke range possible, the springs stay linear throughout MORE of the usable stroke range compared to anything else out there. Swift guarantees the spring rate accuracy to be +/- 2% within the advertised spring rate!
Industry leading spring response
Swifts superior spring compression speed responds much quicker over undulating road surfaces so the tires have a lesser tendency to skip. This enables the tire to stay in contact with the road, improving traction and helps keep tire temperatures down.

I haven't ridden in a 330 with standard BC coils, so I can't directly compare. A friend had BCs on his 2013 WRX wagon and even though I'm lower, mine rides better than his car did. Since the ZHP is my daily I wanted the best possible ride I could get, so I spent the extra on the upgrade. For $1,300 I can't complain at all. I Was looking at the STs as well, but I liked the fact that you get camber plates with the BCs. I don't remember measurements, but at the front my fender is right at the top of the tire, and my rears are a few mm below the tire......so I needed camber correction.

Also look into Fortune Auto. They are assembled here and you can pick and choose valving and spring rates if your heart desires. Also serviceable here in the US with quick turnaround times. They can also be upgraded to 2 or 3 way in the future of your needs change. The S2000 Will be getting the 510s when I redo the suspension on that car.

well, technically speaking they are lighter, and within 2% accuracy of the advertised rate - that's worth paying for alone.
the stock BC springs 'look' linear (fronts anyway), the rears are barrel-type springs so they could be slightly progressive. linear offers more predictable response, however some folks think they aren't very comfy - personally i prefer them.
I haven't ridden in a 330 with standard BC coils, so I can't directly compare. A friend had BCs on his 2013 WRX wagon and even though I'm lower, mine rides better than his car did.
i think that has more to do with your longer wheelbase than the lighter springs. the ZHP has a 5" longer wheelbase than my previous car (2001 Audi A4 Avant), and it rides MUCH better. the WRX likely is similar in wheelbase length to the audi due to AWD packaging similarities.
If you need the BC coils or ST coils just let me know. $350 for swift sprint upgrade lol, ill do far less. :D

Okay so I have a few questions in hoping I can get answered before I install these bad boys. Regarding the rear shocks, it seems the actual shock bodies are adjustable as well as the adjusters on the springs. The instructions say to adjust both of these at the same time. Kind of confused as to how I adjust the actual shock so it's at the right height. Did you guys mess with the shock adjustment at all or did you just bolt them on?
Sorry suspension stuff isn't my strong point so hopefully this makes sense to you guys.
Here's the instructions also. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/03/27/2cdfce7070ade324633a3f98513915e0.jpg

The shock will not adjust height. Use the adjustable perches to adjust height and make sure each shock is equally dampened.

Ok...reading the instructions, it looks like the lower fastening point can be adjusted. I'd just make sure they are equally adjusted maybe half way of the entire travel.

Okay it's starting to make sense now. After doing some research it looks like the rear springs need to be "preloaded" which is where that adjuster on the bottom of the shock comes in play (I think). I'm sure it'll all make a lot more sense when I'm actually doing the install. Anyone else have some more input?
Thanks Dane!

clunking for sure, as any excess movement in a spherical bearing will make noise. it could also be a bad strut, or swaybar endlink, or ball joint.

Hey guys. Just need some guidance with these bc coils for my zhp sedan. What spring rates do you guys recommend? 8k and 10k? Or 12k? Are the swift Springs worth the extra couple hundred? This is only a daily. If anything she may see the track once or twice. Nothing serious. But at the same time, I want a nice quality ride. I'm planning on going low. Not super low, but tucking a little bit of tire. I'll also be in 19in wheels if that makes a difference.

with your goals stated (19" wheels, 'tucking tire', and wanting good ride quality) - you're going to have to make a compromise. those things do not work well together. either forget about handling and ride quality, or go with 17s/18s and a taller ride height.
based on the spring failures we've seen recently on here, i would say, yes, it is a necessity to go with the swift springs. the other thing is - for similar money, you could get a Ground Control kit, or a bilstein PSS kit - both of which will have better damping (and i suspect MUCH better build quality).
for spring rates, i would choose 8K and 12K - are there more options?

I'm running BC's. Has anyone received (what I think might be) the wrong camber adjustment plates? Last year when I got them, the plates that came with them were triangular instead of the circular ones that I would think should have come instead. When I called BC they assured me that this was the "set up that e46 drivers were using now". Did I get B.S.'d because I really think I did...
Also thinking about upgrading to the swift springs. Anyone who's had both want to chime in on the difference?

Thanks for the input! I understand the compromise. But I don't think the ride as to be horrible though right? Just something decent with the setup I plan on having. Also, I'm ordering from the north American website and the 8k, 12k spring rate is available for the e46m. Could I order the m3 coils? Would they work for my zhp?

I'm running BC's. Has anyone received (what I think might be) the wrong camber adjustment plates? Last year when I got them, the plates that came with them were triangular instead of the circular ones that I would think should have come instead. When I called BC they assured me that this was the "set up that e46 drivers were using now". Did I get B.S.'d because I really think I did...

I just put my BC's on last August, and they came with circular camber plates. I'm freaking out reading all these posts about upgrading to Swift springs, I had better go check mine for rust soon. I went with the 8kg/12kg springs. They ride excellent.

Yes, they'll work on the ZHP. Those are what I ran on mine.

Anyone know where to purchase the swift springs from? My springs are starting to rust pretty bad on my BCs. Only been installed for about 14k too... Other than that, I have no complaints! I'm running the 8/12k spring rates too

I have yet to do any reading. What exactly seems to be happening with the springs that come on the coils?
Thanks again for emailing me all the info on your wheel setup btw.. I'm gonna need to update my signature pic too lol. Think I may be pulling on a used set of BBS LM's though man..

I know and I've wanted LM's since I got the car in 2011, red and silver center caps, lussssshh :happyspidey
How about those springs though? Are they just rusting and cracking prematurely?

Some people have had issues with slight rust. I've got to jack my car up and examine them to see... I seriously doubt mine are rusted as they don't salt the roads here and it's Idaho, desert status. But I'm going to check this weekend. I'll let you know.

They salt/treat the piss out of the roads in CT... I have a nice undercarriage hose extension that I use every time they do, but you never know..

Thanks guys!
I am currently running BC's with swift springs. I originally ran them with the BC springs (8k/12k) but I wasn't happy with them and noticed that they were starting to rust after only 9ish months on them. (I live in MN and they really salt the roads here [emoji35])
After upgrading to swift springs (8k/10k), they ride really well. The ride is smoother and the car feels very planted. I highly recommend upgrading to the swift springs!

So you didn't need anything at all? It was a direct fit even though it was meant for the m3? Also, excuse this question but does the higher spring rate mean it'll be stiffer in the rear in comparison to the set made for the zhp?

What did you not like about the 12k in the rear? I'm planning on going moderately low. Not super low tho. Would 12k be necessary. Would I have a better ride with the higher spring rate?

I live in Minnesota and the roads that I travel on often are pretty rough. I just felt that changing to a lower spring rate would be a little more beneficial for my car.

You'll be glad you did, I sure am!

I finally snagged a pair of BC Coilovers. I got a slightly used set with 8,000 miles on them for $750 and it came with an extra new rear shock! I'm still on the original suspension at 107K so this should be a nice upgrade and I will slightly lower the car to level out the rear.
Swift Spring Upgrade is approx $320

Ya that's why I decided to snag these. He was asking $650 plus shipping. I figured shipping would be around 60-80 but it was $100!!!
