Looks great Shawn!!

Side note for you - if you are as particular as I am, I found I could brush on some silver Rustoleum paint on the two contact points where the hood latches down, and it really dresses up the engine bay. Simple and inexpensive, yet holds up great!

Come to think of it, I may have even used spray paint, but applied it from another container with a brush. I'm sure either would work fine.

Sent from my pineapple under the sea.

Shawn,
Similar to Brett's suggestion, use some naval jelly to remove the rust then brush on a light coat of anti-seize, it's about the same color.

I thought I'd put my To Do list here:

- replace pulleys and tensioners
- VANOS seals and VCG
- O2 Sensors (pre-cat)
- Passenger Window Regulator
- headlight lenses
- PS reservoir
- Z4M FCABs
- strut bearings and spring pads
- Alignment
- front clip respray

I'm sure there is more.

Good list Shawn.

Good question. I'm really not sure. I may at some point look to sell it and upgrade to one with lower miles, etc. but for now I enjoy wrenching on this rehab and driving it. And Marin (17) has started driving it a bit more which I don't mind too much considering the condition its currently in.

Pretty straight fwd. front or back? There is a diy I think here and e46f. Be sure to have a magnetic grabber handy for the nut that holds the glass in place. Dan, how many times did I drop it?!
Does she have tint? If so be very careful moving the glass around.

Its the front right regulator. No tint on the car either. Might tackle it this weekend.

ELCID86
12-17-2014, 02:25 PM
Have some painters tape on hand to secure the glass. I did the zip tie method so I didn't have to completely remove the airbag. A second set of hands helps too. I'm sure you'll have it done in no time.

Lol yeah that magnet came in handy for sure! Otherwise yeah, painters tape and a second set of hands. Pretty straightforward once you are in there and can see everything. Take your time with that weather proofing crap. It tears easily.

Thanks Shawn. I too had read previously that the 17215 and 17216 are identical except for the color of the pigtails. Wanted to confirm whether that was indeed the case. Are the connectors also the same? I would have thought that the connectors might be different to make it 'dummy proof' so people don't mistakenly connect them the other way around.

I too am looking to replace my pre-cat O2 sensors this summer so wanted to be sure that I am able to order two 17215s and save a few $$ :)

Thanks.

I'm not sure if it was these O2 sensors or the coils (my hunch) that was making it run so rough when cold, but it runs and drives great now! Nice work! I refreshed my entire cooling system with the belts, tensioners etc last summer. I put in a metal water pump along with the ECS tuning aluminum pulley. 3) brake force display stage 3
4) euro rear fogs (both inner lights)

Shawn, the Z4M FCABs are solid rubber (no fluids inside them) - wondering how it would have helped putting them in the freezer?
I've only ever used dish soap to get them on. I would think freezing them would shrink them.

We tried dishwashing liquid. One went right on. The other kept popping off. Chilling it down seemed to help. Maybe it just shrunk the rubber?

My theory is that when you freeze the rubber, it loses its grip (just like how summer tires lose their grip when the temperature falls) and hence it might have been easier to slip them into the arm. Good to know and thanks for sharing this tip :)

I did get the KW adjustable rear springs and Koni yellow shocks, Z4M FCABs installed. Had to put one of the FCABs in the freezer IOT get the fluid to a point where it would go onto the arm.

Also BP hooked me up with:
1) triple blink turn signals
2) tri-fecta lights
3) brake force display stage 3
4) euro rear fogs (both inner lights)
5) euro hazards
6) comfort open/comfort close
7) clown nose blinks
8) coolant temp gauge calibration

shawn, that is an awesome list and i'm looking forward to getting some of these done to mine as well (hopefully by BP, i haven't had time to buy a cable for it yet). #1 is my main want there.

so what happened with the KWs? it wasn't clear in your post what happened. :)

So I bought the KWs used and turns out that one of them (at least) is blown. The struts I had on the car had at telecast one blown and it we were not able to reassemble/install them. The seller has hence PP'd me a refund and will pick up the COs in a week or so when he's up here from Richmond.
Now I need to decide what to put on it so I can give Bruce back his "demo" set ;-)
Leaning towards Koni but not sure what color!

with dampers, buying new is a good idea, plus you get a warranty!

We used to be able to buy replacement blades with the two silver metal strips to work with the OEM BMW arms. Now they want you to buy the whole black arm and blade together for roughly 10 times the price. A couple years ago I was able to buy the rubber blades alone, but not sure if they still exist (if your two silver metal strips are good and intact).

MMMMMMMM

Need to get together for another imola photoshoot soon with all of our refreshed front ends...

Best refreshes for the new E46 ZHP owner...

1. New headlight lenses if foggy
2. Paint lower mesh grill black
3. Paint rear speaker deck black.
4. Replace A-pillars if saggy

Not necessarily in that order.

:dunno. Peter, any thoughts?

the tool is marketed as an 'E46 subframe mount tool' which allows you to do the subframe mounts without entirely removing the subframe - so, yes, with everything still in place.

as for doing the diff mounts while the subframe is in place? the diff would have to come out, no matter what tool you're using. but that's not a big deal. but there should be room underneath their (i'm thinking of the E46 here) to use that tool on the diff mounts with the subframe on the car. you might need to remove the support brace for the driveshaft to get enough clearance on the front side... but that's easy.

and other bushings? you could totally use this tool on the car for the rear outer upper/lower control arm bushings, and the RTABs.

Tightened front end links nuts. Inspected front ball joints, engine and tranny mounts. Began prep work for LSD swap.

Not too bad but is tiring (I'm 52 next month...) and you need to have he right tools. Don Adolpho's ratcheting breaker bar that he got at Bimmerfest a few years back had been invaluable. My regular breaker just didn't do the trick. I did have to IM/phone a friend when I couldn't get the drive shaft and left axle to separate. Thanks to Vas and Rob I got them free--prying and whacking...

...and I have yet to get the knew one into its new home yet...

great stuff, shawn! i also had a minor speedbump with separating the driveshaft from the rear diff. 15min of patience with light hammer tapping and a chisel in those two grooves got it free. i wire-wheeled that end of the driveshaft and applied some anti-seize to it before it went back in. i would highly-recommend wire-wheeling every bolt as well before it goes back in!

have you used the koch tools bushing tool yet?

Thanks for those suggestions. I used some BP blaster as well which might have helped a bit, especially on the sticky axle.

I hope to look at the diff bushings tonight and give that tool a go!
