I will be rebuilding a set of Kinesis K28's that were on my E36. The E36 sat out in the SoCal sun for eight years. You can imagine the condition of not only the car but the wheels as well. Here's a photo of one of them. On the right side of the wheel, you can see the tire cracks. This is where the tires sat flat for eight years!

Today, I had all four tires removed to begin my journey of restoration.

Found that one of the inner barrels were previously repaired. Looks to have been a crack of some sort that was welded shut. I'm unsure about this welded barrel.

My intent is to restore these and move them over to my ZHP. Hopefully I can do this on a budget but I won't hold my breath. My current 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 Pilots should fit perfectly on these thus saving me the cost of new tires.
I plan on removing all of the rivets and inspecting them and reusing them if they seem OK. Only, I'll need to get them sand blasted or chemically dipped/cleaned then chromed, anodized, powdercoated, or polished. I think anodizing will cost way too much to do.
The faces, I plan on getting stripped and possibly powdercoated a grey color. Not sure about this yet. I love the look of these K28's that I found on the web. Thoughts?
http://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-zTZNwnj/0/XL/i-zTZNwnj-XL.png
There also seems that there might be a very small bend on one of the outter lips of the fronts. I thought I saw this in the past but can't seem to find this bend now. Does anyone know if I have to leave the barrels assembled to get them trued? I would think I'd have to leave the assembled so that they could be spun on a machine to check for run-out.
After getting this checked, I'll take them apart and hopefully get them made up purdy again.
Stay tuned! Feedback is always welcome!
Looking forward to this. Have fun with the car.

I was also able to find a guy selling inner barrels. Sweet!

On 8/22, I replaced the plugs. I assume that they were originals (112k miles). Car feels so much peppy after this and the Vanos rebuild.
On 8/25, I replaced my burnt ZKW headlights with some AL's that I bought from a guy on Craigslist. Wow, what a difference. I regret not replacing the lenses with ZKW lenses. I'm thinking of yanking them out again and doing this. I don't care for the beam pattern of the AL's but still, the improvement is HUGE.
Not realizing that the AL's included the AL brackets, I purchased a set of AL brackets from another member (thanks quikryptonite!) and have no need for them. So if anyone needs them, PM me for the same killer deal that I got them for.
I now have my ZKWs for sale. Great candidates for AL conversion or FXRs (or something else). I would have gone this route but didn't want the down time. I'm actually still considering retrofitting these and putting back in my car and selling the ALs so I won't have any down time. I could probably sell the ALs faster than the ZKWs!

Today, I visited a local powder coating business to get a quote on getting the faces, rivets/bolts, and inner barrels cleaned up and powder coated. The lips, I've decided to have another local place do a mirror polish on them. It's pretty cheap to do and after spending about 3 hours polishing just one lip, $25 per lip is a bargain to me!
So the dilemma now is, what color do I choose? I initially wanted a darker grey color, similar to what they are now with silver/polished rivets. Now I'm thinking I might want to go with a more silver face and black rivets. Something to contrast. The other option, which is more expensive, is to have the faces brushed polished and then powder coated clear and also with black rivets.
My last issue are center caps! Hard to find since Kinesis is no longer around. I'll deal with that after, I suppose.
What would you do?

Been a long time since I've update this. Got everything back from powder and I'm quite happy with how they turned out. Haven't reassembled them, just or then together to see how they turned out.
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/23/08853eb0081f9b0993b32985d5115de7.jpg
Next up is to reassemble them and then suspension. Undecided if I will just transfer my PSS to these or get a new set of tires. My PSS' are still new. Just want to leave tires on my 135's in case I switch back to them one day.

It's not going to be tracked at all. Just street driven. I want something comfy yet not any softer than stock but not much firmer, if this is even possible. The firmness right now at stock height is perfect for me. I like the idea of adjustable coilovers. Had them in my GS350 previously and loved the adjustability.

FYI, the Cup Kit is STIFF. You know those Hondas you see going over bumps sometimes and it looks like the car is in a tin can being shaken around? Yeah, that's what it's like to me.
It's not uncomfortable per se, but it most definitely is starting to get old that hitting even the smallest bumps feels like you're hitting the bigger ones in a very soft and cushy car. The amount of low is absolutely perfect to me (no wheel gap but no tuck in the front and very little bit in the back). If I had to replace the suspension right now I'd most likely get the same thing.
Looks good.
Do the KW v1 come with endlinks?

I have the H&R Cup Kit. I honestly don't know what the kit is now called; I always thought it was the H&R Race Cup Kit, but apparently they only sell "Sport" and "Touring" now, so I assume this falls under the "Sport" kit as it's pretty aggressive. I would get the kit only because of the amount of low I have; I find it to be absolutely perfect, and if I had coilovers I doubt I'd be able to get it as perfect as this with the adjustments.
I contemplated going back to stock suspension but ultimately that would compromise the car's amazing handling as it sits now (it doesn't lean too much, just a little), and I can't afford to do that since it sees track 3x a year. If there was a kit that had the comfort of stock, the looks of the Cup Kit, and I could find a way to make it corner as well as this or even better, I'd switch to that setup. Oh well!
Note: On my kit, I only retained the springs. I switched out the shocks when the H&R ones went bad. Replaced them with Bilstein Sport shocks/struts.

Suspension overhaul today.
-KW V1's
-All new top hats front and rear
-Z4M FCABs and RTABs with limiters
-Front and rear reinforcement plates
Front needs to be lowered more. I'm happy with the rear. As-is, I can't even tell the difference between the factory suspension. Although I haven't driven it a whole lot, just locally. Overall I'm happy with my choice in coils. Will get it aligned after I dial in the front height.

So I finally put in some miles. Now that I've lowered it more in the front, it is more noticeable. Still rides incredibly smooth and very composed. Simply feels like its on rails in the turns. Steering feel is amazing with the lack of body roll and the extra caster from the Z4M FCABs. Still have yet to align it.
Heading on a business trip tomorrow morning so it'll be parked till Friday and hopefully settled. I hope to align it on Friday or Saturday.
Highly recommend these KWs!
Here's a somewhat better look at it. Ground wasn't level here but the front still has a slightly larger wheel gap, like the stock setup.

Dane - do your springs shift and clunk when doing a full turn to the left or right? Mine seem to. Doesn't bother me but just curious.

No rubbing at all but I don't have any spacers installed to push the wheels out. My front wheel barely clears my coilovers though. I might raise the rear about two full turns though to even it out.
Can't wait to get my wheels on as well as the splitters. I'm so worried about messing the splitters up. They're such beautiful pieces of work.
I still have to get my DME updated and my CCV parts changed out.

Yah, they're tight. If they weren't, I'd likely have a clunk during compression over small bumps, which I don't have. But, I'll have to go double check it all next week.

I wonder if I have bad top hats up front. Hmmmmmm.....
You said you put new ones in?

Yeah, brand new Sachs top mounts front and rear. Also installed front and rear reinforcement plates.

Figured out the clunk. It was missing a washer under my top hats! Duh! Problem solved!

Not really. Only drove it around locally but in that short amount, it feels like it's stock. My boys didn't mention anything! My wife will be the test. Although she felt the car was bumpy and stiff in stock form.
WAF (wife acceptance factor) is the true tell. Mine feels the same way.

Finally took the car out with the wife & kids. No comment on how it rode. That's how smooth these things are. Love these coils. No regrets at all.

How are the Khoalty Angel Eyes? Easy install? Good fit?
Um, when are the wheels getting mounted. Just seeing the restoration pics made me all like...

I had them on my old 330Ci ZSP. I liked them. They were very bright, definitely a more blue-ish hue than the Xenon headlights, but never bothered me. Bright enough at night to be like daytime running lights. Probably 60 LEDs per ring, so you could see each LED individually if you were closer than 3 feet away. Definitely a good cheap option. Install was relatively easy. While the clips to hold on the lights worked, I would suggest using electrical tape or something of that sort to secure the clips even more (mine slipped a little over 18 months).

Likely in the summer or after summer. This Disney Cruise that I'm taking the family on in June is going to take some time to recover from! They are essentially ready to go. I just need to seal them up, get valve stems, and tires. I could use my tires from my stock wheels but I'd like to have a spare set available to me for whatever reason. Plus, I think I'm going to go with 245/35/18 in the rears instead of 255. Rears are 18x9.5 +51 but will likely be adding a 12mm spacer bringing it to +39, which is cause for rubbing, I believe.

Yep, I agree with this statement. I'll see if I can snap some good photos of them this week.
Quick Question.
When you installed the z4m fcab, did you get them already pressed in or pressed them in yourself into your old lolipops? I just got a set and was curious if there was a specific way they go into the housings.

I pressed them into the lollipops. I acquired a spare set of lollipops and brought them to a machine shop and had them pressed for me since I don't have a press at my disposal, unfortunately!
Yes, there's a specific way that they must be pressed in. If I remember correctly, there's an arrow in the bushing that should point to a marker that's on the lollipop itself. Wish I had pics to show but I also believe that the hole in the bushing should rest closest to the inside of the lollipop that bolts to the subframe.

Hi Vas - No, I haven't had time. I'm hoping for the weekend of 3/5. Kid's sports are finally over after this weekend!
