So.....I have been wanting to pull the trigger on new pre-cat O2 sensors.
Here is a link to Amazon for the O2 sensors I was looking at...Great price.
EDIT: I bought these. These are the correct ones:
1 - Bosch 17215 Oxygen Sensor, OE Type Fitment (http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=000000&IS2=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=zhpcom-20&o=1&p=8&l=as4&m=amazon&f=ifr&asins=B000CF3WOY)
1 - Bosch 17216 Oxygen Sensor, OE Type Fitment (http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=000000&IS2=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=zhpcom-20&o=1&p=8&l=as4&m=amazon&f=ifr&asins=B000CF3WPI)
BMW P/N I need are 11787523434 and 11787523435

That is a negative. The one in the Amazon link you provided is for pre 3/2003 models, and those are post-cat sensors.
The Bosch Part #'s for what you need (pre-cat O2 sensors, post 03/2003) are 17215 (bank 1, cylinders 1-3) and 17216 (bank 2, cylinders 4-6).
Info obtained from Turner Motorsport.

I already outlined that, DW... :)
17215 is for bank 1 (aka BMW Part # 11-78-7-523-434)
17216 is for bank 2 (aka BMW Part # 11-78-7-523-435)
You have 2 pre-cat O2 sensors and 2 post-cat. (1) O2 sensor for each bank of 3 cylinders.
Bosch has two different part numbers for those sensors. Don't know why but it is what it is.
Here is the problem. Whenever I google the Bosch Part #'s, the connector on it I think seems different than the one on the E46. This is why I would order based on a BMW part # and not a Bosch one, because then it's guaranteed to fit.
danewilson77
02-26-2011, 06:39 AM
Yeah.....roger that. Just didn't wanna pay double/triple the price.
My question was...could I buy 2 of the 17215's since Amazon doesn't have the other one? I doubt there is any difference between the two of them.
MrMaico
02-26-2011, 07:03 AM
If I had to guess I'd think the difference between the 17215 and 17216 is just the length of the connector wire?
EDIT: Or maybe not, they both say 1010mm which I'm assuming is the wire length?
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BN53&mospid=47713&btnr=11_3555&hg=11&fg=50&hl=1
EDIT 2: 1010mm is 40 inches though, are the connector wires really that long?:dunno

I think you could buy 2 of the 15's and call it a day.
I just don't want it to turn into a PITA. I don't have time for that.

Definitely some differences in looks AND price between the two. Still quite a bit cheaper than the BMW ones though. I think if it were me I would get both p/n's just to be safe.

When it comes to O2 sensors, don't try to skimp. They're not cheap, so if you order the wrong thing, you're going to get pissed.
Definitely get one of each part number, the way it's supposed to be.
I still would use BMW's part # just to be absolutely certain you don't get the wrong one.

This unfortunately isn't 100% reliable. Many times websites will use stock photos of similar models, so the connector in the picture may or may not be what you will get.

Most of the good websites will not use stock photos, so I you go with the realoem, that should show the proper connectors. Once you find the P/N and a good pictures then goto amazon.com to pull your part that you need.

Earlier this week, I ordered Bosch 17215 & 17216 O2 sensors (front bank and rear bank, respectively) for my car's 100k mi birthday. The boxes arrived and had the correct labels on them.
Upon inspecting the part number on the O2 sensors themselves, they were both 17215 and were identical. d'oh! Did Bosch put the wrong part in one of the boxes?
I removed the O2 sensors from my car to investigate. The ones that came out were 17215 & 17216, but they looked identical (same wire length, connector, etc) except for the wire insulation: 17216 has gray insulation while 17215 has black.
I called my local Kragen to see if they had a 17216 in stock that I could examine. They didn't, but they said that their computer shows that 17215 should fit both front & rear bank... although they did have 17216 listed as well. Very odd... especially considering they were different prices!
Based on the info from Kragen, I decided to give it a shot - I installed the new 17215 in both banks. Took it for a drive - let it warm all the way up, did a few redline shifts.... runs great!
At this point I'm going to venture to guess that they are indeed identical except for the wire insulation color.

I had two codes since I bought the car that did not affect operation as far as I could tell. P2237, and P2240. I bought the bought O2 sensors from Amazon, synonomously with doing the Shark injector install. The Shark cleared my codes, so I have $200 worth of sensors sitting on my workbench.

I may or may not need them soon. I'm very fast approaching 100k miles, which is the life of an O2 sensor. Even if I don't need them, I'm probably going to end up replacing them. Don't have the coin for them at the moment though.
Which O2 sensors do you have? I'm going to do all (4) when I do mine; (2) pre-cat, (2) post-cat.

BMW PN for the two sensors are 11787514926 and 11787514927.
OEM is Bosch 15680 and 15681.
Cheapest I've found was at FCP Euro - http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-oxygen-sensor-rear-15680 & http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-oxygen-sensor-rear-15681.

Folks, I am relatively to the ZHP mafia forums - I am more active on the E46F forums. I do not have a ZHP but I have a 2004 330i with about 142,000 KMs now. Bought it at 128,000 KMs. I joined this forum because everybody is so helpful and the level of discussions is so mature, without any flaming.
I have been getting the P2240 code randomly since I bought my car in April this year.
http://i.imgur.com/S7Pr3hS.jpg
The code usually pops-up when I am cruising along on the highway and I need to accelerate around the 120 km/h range. I believe there is some slight hesitation when I step on the gas and after a few seconds, the MIL comes on. The code disappears after a few days.
When I plug in my PA soft scanner, I get:
2974/A4 - O2-sensor before KAT Bank 2: lines
2973/84 - O2-sensor before KAT Bank 1: lines
I have done a bunch of PM stuff on my car over the summers (with help from orange260z):
- Spark plugs
- Fuel filter
- Full cooling system overhaul
- Fuel pump
- Auto GM transmission fluid+filter change
- Differential fluid change
- Cold weather CCV and hoses
- New OEM DISA valve
- VCG and OFHG replacement
- Upper and lower intake boots
- Brake fluid bleed
Question: Is it worth it to get the O2 sensors posted on this thread and replace them? Or has this something to do with the software version on the DME?
Danewilson, I believe you were getting the same codes on your car, what did you do to fix it?
