This works for now, but I don't always want to travel top down. What to you all use?

Use the one the attaches to the boot lid.

Trailer hitch?! ;-)
Why not use a trunk mounted rack. I have on my sedan. I put a piece of microfiber under the feet to protect the paint. Something different about verts?

Yup, trunk mounted rack with something under the parts that touch the trunk (even though they are very soft).

This one, suggested by someone on the Fanatics site, is pricey but looks very well made.

I have the Saris Bones (3). They also make a 2.

Saris racks in general are great racks. I might need one for the vert and the 2 bike is the one I'd get.

I have studied the trailer hitch options extensively for our ZHPs, and while this is probably over the top for what you want to do for carrying a bike, there is a company in the US that carries the European Westfalia aftermarket hitches for the E46 sedan, and they seem to be the best ones available for our cars due to how they are attached to the vehicle. I suspect that we will never be a listing for an aftermarket hitch for a convertible for fear of lawsuits from towing with the top down. (Convertible owners, is the rear of your car any different then a sedan?) Nonetheless, if this would fit, it would allow you a way to use a bike rack in conjunction with a trailer hitch. This hitch offers 165lb. max tongue weight, so it should be far more then is needed for the weight of the bike(s) and bike rack.
Not cheap, but looks like a really nice setup: http://www.eurohitches.com/bmw-e46-sedan-19992005-p-29.html
And for the bike rack component: http://www.eurohitches.com/portilo-bicycle-carrier-p-67.html
Bosal is another supplier that looks to make hitches for various Bimmers, but I have been unsuccessful in finding them available in the US recently.
Hope this helps!

Found a used Saris Bones 2 locally on CL. I'm picking it up this week.
Lost the whole weekend of riding here due to rain. Bummed out.

Well broke down and bought a rack for the vert Saris Bones 3. Decided on that over the 2 for the extra support arm. Planning a driving vacation with the ZHP up to NC and bringing the bikes. So needed the rack.

Here's two showing how we mounted. Note bottom feet on trunk not bumper per recommendation of bike shop. Can open trunk. Also had to switch arm position so lowers cleared license plate.

Nice fittment. I'd recommend cutting a microfiber cloth and put a swatch under each foot to reduce marring of your paint finish.

That top 'foot' on the trunk denting the trunk in scares me! I'm finally about to order a roof rack for mine so I can ride more. Haven't ridden much since getting the 330.

Actually shop recommended against, said that actually can cause more damage. Hope he's right cause that was my original plan

I did that the first time I put the rack on the car. Went without this morning, and the top leg put a scratch in the paint despite my making sure both the car and the pad were clean. Back to the microfiber for me. . .
Had a good workout. Pretty hilly with 2500 feet of climbing.

Where I circled it looks like the foot of the rack is denting in the top of the trunk. . .

Pretty sure that was light and shadows. Took pics so knew where straps went. I would have noticed an indent but I'll look closely next time I mount.
Thanks

It seems like your want the foot more towards the roof on a more solid part of the lid.
