View Full Version : Question for Automatic trans?

Well I was having a fun time today in step mode... Until I noticed something odd. I lit into it in 1st gear around a corner (wonderful sound) until the car started lurching forwards and back violently. I looked at the tach and it was around 5400 rpm. Up shifted and it stopped. Is this a problem? Don't want to blow my trans before I get the manual all set up and ready to go.

Hmmm, fuel pump? Battery (you'd be amazed)?

Yeah I was reading a bit on "limp mode" and some pointed towards a new battery fixing that--strange.

Was thinking of bushings, maybe differential bushings, but if it's really bad I doubt those would do it.

It was really abnormal to say the least

Never had that problem before. Currently at 117,000 miles and I use Steptronic a lot but it's always been smooth from M1 through M5.

How many miles on the tranny and fluid?

139800 on the auto and recent fluid change

Did you do the drain and fill method? Just curios as to whether something could have gotten stirred up in there if it was a flush, etc.

When you noticed the jerking motion, were you letting off the throttle and/or feathering it?

I think European motors flushed it...

What color was the fluid? I'd be worried not just for you but for myself if it was the trans. I do drive like a maniac according to my mechanic since he said that when he drained the transmission fluid, it was darker than my engine oil. He flushed it 4 times and it still wasn't completely pink.

Or maybe the differential? I had never done that before but I had it changed for the first time along with the transmission flush a few thousand miles ago. Immediately after, I remember driving just felt a little smoother.

I don't do maniac things but enjoy the sound at 5k rpm... I didn't take not of the color. It is leaking pink fluid now from the main seal I believe. Requires 1000$ job and pulling the tranny so I may throw a 6 spd in. Also going to put an LSD in from an m3

I wouldn't be so quick to rule this out. I was thinking more like motor mounts possibly though. I know it used to happen on vehicles with a throttle linkage and bad motor mounts. It would probably be a good idea to check them all, engine, trans and diff.

Any update??

Everything appears to be normal. Doing a 6spd swap from another ZHP transmission, will inspect even further under car.
