View Full Version : apex 17 x 8.5 versus apex 17 x 9

Was thinking of Apex Arc-8 for my PDX track wheels - to save a bit on tire prices and weight.

I read the thread posted about 17 x 8.5, but was wondering if anyone considered the 17 x 9 square setup and why that may or may not be preferable to the 17 x 8.5 setup.

Suspension is stock currently but thinking of Bavarian Motorsport Perf. springs and FSD shocks - Bav Auto bars front and back and ECS Tuning strut bar up front as well.

I don't plan on doing many PDX events - just a few and then these wheels will double as my daily driver wheels.

Lots of people are running 17x9. I actually think 17x9 is a more popular setup for track use than the 17x8.5... I'm running 245 square with eibach pro/koni sports combo. No rubbing. I use these as DD wheels/light track use. Here are some photos

I have 17x8.5 for clearance in the rear outer fender. I have had rubbing issues on 18x8.5 255 tires so I opted to stay 17x8.5 and use 245 tires this time around.

Thank you :)

Call me crazy, but that looks like Presidio Park in SF. Am I right?

Not crazy Derbo, that is definitely the Presidio.

Bimmernate, here is what square, 18x9 et 42, Anthracite ARC8's look like on stock suspension :thumbsup

And yes, that was the presidio in SF :)

Not a E46, but running 8.5 due to the odd rear offsets of the E82 and no easy fitment options. Will most likely have to go custom route sooner or later to fit 17x9 :(

Do you have anymore pics of this?

It looks really sharp!

Thanks! To be honest, I don't have any specifics of the wheels up close. I have a ton of car shots on my other computer though, and can take some more if you want to see any specific angle.

If anyone has any pictures of 17" Apex Arc-8 wheels from the side, could you please podt them? Thanks

I pinged apex and they said that both 17x8.5 and 17x9 would rub the suspension with a 245 or 255 without spacers.

Pretty big bummer for me as I'd prefer not to run spacers if I can help it.

I didn't know that. I thought the 17" 245's would be fine. That is a bummer. I am trying to get a set of these, it would help a lot on saving money on tires so I can put that money towards other things.

Derek, you have 245, what size spacers are you running?

I don't run any spacers but I run coilovers without the large spring perch so I don't have rubbing issues.

You think 10mm spacers would be fine? I got a friend who would be able to lend me a set of them.

Bryant, if you're using Style 135's the 10mm spacers are perfect. I used to run 10mm spacers at all 4 corners with my Style 135's before moving up to my BBS CH wheel sets. :thumbsup

I am going to get the 10mm spacers from my buddy sometime soon for my 135s for the time being. Will 10mm be good to run on Apex 245/40/17 without being on coilovers with no rubbing issues? Or should I do 15mm?

Bryant,

I think if you stay with the 10mm spacers, you should be okay. I wouldn't be surprised if you rub using 15mm spacers.

i run 10mm spacers front and rear on my 135M's - i have occasional rubbing in the rear, but i am running FAT tires. 255/40/18 OE M3 ContiSportContacts. they are really nice, but wide... way wider than the 255/35/18's i was running before. i need to roll the rear fenders.

I concur with rolling the rear fenders Peter. I have my rear fenders rolled and no rubbing when I was using my Style 135's with 10mm spacers...I was using Pilot Super Sports then....

yeah, these M3 Contis are wide. i think the tread width is 10.4"! not to mention, taller - 26", a full 1" larger in diameter than the stock size.

I noticed that even the Toyo's aren't as wide as the sidewalls curve inwards just like the PSSs :) That means no rubbing for Charrie. ;)

i want me some PSS but i have my eye on some OZ Ultraleggera's for sale locally...with tires already, unfortunately.

get the wheels Peter then just use the tires until you can afford getting new tires for the wheels. :thumbsup

yeah, considering it. but i'll have to sell my 135M's to recoup costs... i really like the 135M's though (aside from the weight!).

The 135's are definitely nice...shame they weigh so much.

Lol. Once I need new tires, I will probably end up picking up a set of 17" Apex Arc-8. They seem solid
