Great PO

So on Sunday I stop by the PO of our new (to us) 2004 IR Vert to pick up the 2nd key -- his wife had that key and was away when I picked up the car a couple of weeks ago. He asks how's the car is doing and I tell him the wife loves it but we've had a few maintenance items to attend to. Explain the fix to the seat back release lever (he was aware of this one) at about $300 and the battery/alternator replacements at about $900. He excuses himself for a minute and comes back with a $600 check, says he feels bad that those things happened and insists on splitting the bill with me. Totally unexpected and truly appreciated.

Wow. Just wow. I was just talking with a good friend of mine about honor. We were talking about walking away from mortgages that technically one could afford, but same goes here. I feel like I always get the short end of the stick because I honor my debts, etc... its good to know people like this po are out there. I hope you send him a handwritten note about how honorable of a deed that was. Thanks for sharing this.

gr330zhp - for the PO, this was his wife's fun car and she didn't like shifting gears, thus why it only had 8900 miles. She's now turned green and replacing it w/ a Prius or Civic Hybrid to take the guilt away from her driving a Denali SUV most of the time. He said he was looking at trading his SL500 (his 2nd car) in on an M5.

nk_zhp - when we confirmed the deal on the phone, the PO joked that he needed a bottle of bourbon to drown his tears since he was losing 60% of the purchase price (albeit over a 6 year period).. So when I went to pick up the car, I had a $60 bottle of Booker's in hand for him along with the check. Guess that little gesture just paid itself back tenfold.

Unfortunately that is very unusual in today's world. It also bodes well for that car having been well cared for.

That is a great story. I'd like to think I'd do the same in a similar situation, but I can't guarantee it. When I sold my 323i I took it to get about $800 worth of service right before the car switched hands. I sold it with one major suggestion since I'd just rebuilt the tranny that year: get the fluid changed in the next 30k. Did they do it? Nope. Where's the car? Broke. It's been a couple of years so I don't feel responsible for it anymore.
