View Full Version : I already checked the freakin gas cap...

After I did the ccv system my "check gas cap" light started coming on, and subsequently going off a few mins later. Since I knew the gas cap was tight, I figured I should just order a new one.
Eventually the new one seemed to help. The light came on less, and after a few days it stayed off.
Fast forward a week or so and the light came back on after filling up the car with gas. :facepalm This time it is constantly lit - it comes on after accelerating for the first time after starting the car (not when just idling) and doesn't go off after driving for a while like it had previously.
Anyone have any thoughts? I figured it had to be something I did with the ccv, but I've checked everything and I can't find anything amiss. (That doesn't mean I didn't miss something, though...)The car runs great, and the cel isn't on.
To add another variable, I did use fuel injector cleaner prior to the ccv change. I'm not really sure why I decided to do that.

Ok, so I guess I'm on my own with this one :p
My new theory is that I pulled too hard on the small hose that goes to the intake's F connector. I've read that that guy makes his way to the fuel filter and vents it or something. If the rubbery thing that connects the hose to the fuel filter is deteriorated and I pulled on it to make way for the throttle body etc I bet I caused a minor leak. Which, if my theory is correct, would make the car loose a little of the evap system vacuum. I'm a little confused about how it would cause that loss in vacuum if it's connected to the intake, but I guess there's vac from the intake. So who knows. I'll just have to take a look and pray I'm right.

Hope you sort this gremlin out Ryan. Sounds plausible.

It's actually the vac for the fuel pressure regulator.
Check real oem for the evap canister loxation and check for leaks there.

There we go! I thought ya'll were secretly mad at me or something...
Realoem isn't giving me parts lists for some reason... Got some diagrams though.

The parts list has changed. You no longer have to scroll down the page, rather move your mouse to the bottom and scroll within the P/N box.

How do you know it's not the air pressure pump, #20?

I have no idea if it's the air pressure pump. Any way I could tell?
I replaced the rubber connection for the hose heading up to the f connector. It was very brittle and fell apart trying to get it off. The gas cap light didn't go off when I started the car, but maybe it has to be driven a while?
Another weird thing is that there aren't any codes. Shouldn't it throw something?

Yeah it was weird. I couldn't get the parts box to load at all...

I'm wondering how it determines that there's a pressure leak. If it's thinking that air is leaking out of the cap, would it have to a problem on that side of the fuel tank, since air in theory wouldn't get past the tank?

I think it thinks air is leaking into the tank through the cap.

Purge valve!
Here's what I think happened. I didn't connect the purge valve hose quite correctly when I did the ccv. So that's why the gas cap light went on and off at first. The second mistake I made was that I ran the purge valve hose underneath the hose for the power steering reservoir. So eventually the weight from that completely disconnected it and the computer thought air was leaking through the gas cap. I only checked the hose connections once when the problem first came up. Obviously I didn't catch it.
Came across this diagram that helped me understand things:

Has anybody else had gas cap light issues?
I had mine turn on again. I think I also had it in the beginning of the year. I'm not sure if I cleared it or it went off. I'll see if this one turns off by itself. I'm pretty sure I closed the cap properly. Do the caps/gaskets on these usually go bad?

Mine ended up being the Y connect on the vent tubes.

How do you get to it other than taking off the wheel?
Also is that the only part you replaced or was there also some hose?

What codes are you guys getting? I'm getting a P0444.

I haven't checked. The light disappeared. I'm not sure if that means the problem is gone or not severe enough.

Wheel and fender liner had to come off. I found it using my smoke tester. Hooked it up to the gas fill tube. I suspected the charcoal canister or rear purge valve.
I actually just o-clamped in a plastic y-fitting from the local auto parts store.

I had the very same thing happen with my 325i. Wasted money and time frigging with the purge valve and tank, finally discovered the rusted out connector behind the fender liner. Once you find it, its ony a few bucks to fix. Be advised those who live in the snow belt!

I'll definitely have to check this out. I found the post where Shawn originally posted the replacement details:

Maybe that's one part BMW should have made out of plastic! They just can't get it right :(

Agreed! Hopefully we can get the message out here and save others money and time. If your car has ever been near snow and salt, check this first.
The charcoal canister and leak diagnostic pump (sometimes called DMTL??) setup is all plastic and pretty durable, an unlikely fail point. Check out my post #45 at the link below, it includes a way to test the DMTL pump;

Yep. I️ replaced the front and rear “pumps” before I️ discovered the crapped out y-connect (doing smoke test down gas fill tube—which I’d never heard of but was will to try as smoking it from the air intake wasn’t showing any issues...).
