View Full Version : What's the Fastest you've gone in your ZHP?

As the title states. How fast, for how long, how it felt, would you do it again, and lastly do you think the zhp handled it well!?

I've gone 130 on a road near my home, early morning no one around. It was fun to say the least. I didn't want to push it to far...not sure why just didn't feel it was a good idea...maybe I'm wrong and it would have been fine.

154 in my first ZHP... I'm kinda dumb lol. The car was solid at that speed but I'd never do it again just because of the risk. I was going at it for a good few miles down the highway at 3AM, long enough to get the speed that high. I've not taken my current ZHP above 100, and I don't think I've even gotten it that high.

Bounced the limiter coming home when I bought it. When I get the limiter removed I will retry...I'm sure with enough road these cars could easily do 175 mph.

That'd have to be a lot of road. I had mine north of 150 in mine over a 1.6 mile stretch of road by school that's straight and flat. Took almost the whole way to get there. Once you hit 130 the acceleration really slows down

Hah. That's a quick way to make it home. I do think our cars can handle the speed and more..since they're limited so high stock. I just don't think of it like that. Now a modern m3 I would push that up to 150 on a track all day. Never been higher than 140 in my life, and that was in a Porsche Carrara turbo...talk about quick.

160 a few weeks ago on a long straight back road near my house. Passed my buddies wrx with ease and tried to outrun my other friends gti with the k04 turbo. Once I hit 160 he came up along side and waved. He could have passed but he let me have my pride. That'll be the fastest I go for a long long time. The car felt fine and I felt comfortable but it's not something id like to do everyday.

Anything over 90 in the Commonwealth is mandatory jail time give or take ONLY the "niceness" of the cop who catches you...that said............I 'may or may not' have hit ~110 on the way back from picking her up in Knoxville on 81....and on "that one part of 66."

Couldn't resist. Car felt great, but it isn't something I'd risk especially when I want to take her to the track and all down the road, plus autox isn't as fast but it definitely gets it out of your system a bit.

Yeah, agree with Dane... I will say now, top speed is completely not worth it... There really isn't any thrill to me going that fast. Torque and acceleration leave much more grin on my face...

That being said, I did 138 coming home from a club in Fort Lauderdale, up I-95 North... Would I do it again? Only on a track.

This. The commonwealth is very strict in regards to speeding and the cops hide on the interstate.

I don't recall how fast I went in the zhp because top speed is not worth the fines/jail/etc for me.

Yeah...this is true. My issues are not so much with those penalties as much as with the speed limits throughout the state being set "just low enough" on certain roads to make it easier for the highway patrol to incur the lower tier penalties.

I don't think I've ever gone faster than 90mph on the street in the ZHP on a freeway somewhere, and that happens very rarely. Fastest ever was 120mph on track but on most California tracks I cannot get beyond 100-110 mph on front straight before braking for the first turn, or before my courage runs out.

155, when it cuts off it doesn't make you decelerate, you just stay at 155.

I'm in the "not over 90" camp, myself. Too much of a goody-goody I guess! I do have way more fun on a twisty road than speeding in a straight line, though. I missed my car so much when I was in northern NM a couple weeks ago. Beautiful curvy roads AND high speed limits, but only a rented Corolla to drive on them! Someday...

About 100mph in the ZHP. It was in the early days, I was passing and didn't realize I was going that fast. Gotta love the 3.46.

Fastest ever, 150mph in a 6-speed M-Sport individual 135i on the autobahn. Car was like on train tracks, except a bit more noisy than usual. The energy required to keep full focus on your surroundings at that speed in full daytime traffic was impressive though. I enjoyed the 110mph cruising speed in the middle lane however!

We've got some... very, very responsible drivers on this board. :shifty

:rofl

Hahaha... ok, I'll tell the full story

First of all, I no longer push my car to full speed; more importantly I do not promote it on open roads. In the great (commie) state of California triple digit speeds are considered "reckless endangerment" and IIRC are a felony and automatic seizure of your vehicle. Since I don't want a felony on my record and love my car too much to risk it being auctioned off I no longer speed to that extent.

As for my top speed run... I was young, dumb, had literally just broken up with my girlfriend, and was fairly pissed off. I decided to do a 'top speed run' and see how fast I could get back to my house. I managed the full trip from starting my car in the parking lot at the Hard Rock to my driveway in under 4 hours including a gas stop and getting stuck in SoCal traffic.

For those of you that have driven 15 from Vegas to SoCal, my top speed run was done after I passed the state line. I had refueled in Primm, and when I passed the border I decided to just go all out as I was climbing the hill. I did this on the day of the Super Bowl, during the actual game so I wasn't too worried about cops being on the road. My car was 100% stock, but it was nice and cold thick air so I had some decent power during that attempt. Unfortunately, it was windy as hell in the desert that day so it was scary as hell at speeds over 130mph so I decided to never do this again.

As a general note, it's not smart to do high speed runs on the open road. I admit that I speed on occasion, but as I have matured I have learned that it is more exciting to go full speed in the twisties that full speed on a straightaway so I no longer do stupid scheiße like that anymore.

We the 'older' members do not condone nor promote excessive speed on public roads. If you wish to push your car to the limit there are places you can do that. I have experienced extreme rates of speed and still to this day plan to join the 200+ mph club... but not on open roads. It's not worth the problems that come with it so just don't do it. If you wish to do triple digit speeds do it in a safe and controlled area (aka a straight on a racetrack or an abandoned runway, not on the public roads).

I know when you're young, dumb, and full of cum it's hard to listen to an old guy like me, but I'm speaking from experience. It's not worth the troubles that come with the momentary excitement of speed. Please be careful out there and don't speed on the open roads. There is a reason I now daily drive a car with a top speed of 101, it keeps me out of trouble. Please be careful everybody.

lol Breaking up with a girl.... My ex Fiance breaking up with me is what propelled me to top out my 3S along mountain passes and empty desert highways. Always in the late/dead parts of the night. Well... I say breaking up.. She left me standing beside an airport holding the ring as she ran off to her ex lol. Those top end runs were pretty much fueled by the fact that I don't drink so that was my.....release.. I trotted out the ZHP more so out of curiosity than anything. It moves....with zest lol. But these days I tend to do about 5 over at most instead of 55 over lol. I won't support anyone speeding these days but I'd be lying if I said I never took an afternoon and had a spirited drive that didn't take place on a track lol.

Yes, if we are talking mechanical limit then in 5th with a 3.07 you can top out at 165mph, 4th in an auto with a 3.64 tops out at 139mph. Although an automatic can reach the 155 mph mark, a non electronically limited top speed run in overdrive gear are inefficient and cannot actually be achieved due to other physical/mechanical limitations. If both cars had the same ratio rear end then top speed would still be the same, it is the final drive ratio that really affects the limit when electronic limiters are not in effect

In my 325 I hit 105 passing somebody on a 2 mile stretch of perfectly straight road in Oregon near crater lake.

I know for sure I hit 110 in my 1998 Volvo s70 once lol. So I guess I've been faster in my Volvo than both my e46 lol

I plan to do a track day this year.... Not sure what speeds ZHPs are hitting on Sonoma Raceway. I saw NASCAR was doing 145ish today there. 110 would be my goal I guess.

Hit 120mph in the M (in a 25 no less) on public roads.

Obviously I wouldn't just be doing this on a random Tuesday.

Ohio State cop friend escorted myself and the Eurocharged gang to a cruise at Timmayfest in his Ferrari 355. We were 10 min away and the police escorted cruise was starting in 3 min. We made a left turn and the cop - leading the group - nailed it as he finished cornering so we all took off behind him. An SL600, my M3, an FBO E55 and another stock E46 M3 all punched it behind this yellow Ferrari and made our cruise in time.

That was fun.

However other than that I keep it under 100mph cuz I don't have a death or traffic ticket wish

You're not taking into account that the automatic makes less power to the ground due to drivetrain losses. Also if the automatic had the same rear end ratio as the ZHP, its 5th gear acceleratoin would be non-existant (since its 5th gear is .74:1 as opposed to the ZHP's .85:1)

At a given rpm an engine will make x horsepower. From that subtract HP necessary to overcome aerodynamic drag, drive train loss, and rolling resistance, if there's any left the car will go faster, if not that's the maximum speed. If the engine would make more HP at an rpm higher than that point, then a lower gear would allow the car to go faster but the actual ratios are inconsequential.

E_Rak
06-24-2014, 04:50 PM
That may be true, but the torque converter will put the car in it's powerband anyway, as is the over-eagerness of the tranny software. If there is enough overlap in the ratios for the lower gear to vmax the car, it is indeed possible the top speed won't be obtained in the taller gear. If that's what you're trying to say??

The torque converter has an electronic locking mechanism that physically locks the input and output to a 1:1 ratio above a certain rpm. Not sure when exactly this happens but it would be around 3000rpm and wouldn't have any effect on top speed.

I didn't explain that very well. The electronic part of it is called a Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid and is in the transmission. The physical locking mechanism is inside the torque converter though.

Wikipedia has some rudimentary explanations:

It looks like they were trying to figure that out on e46. One guy says he monitored it using INPA and it locked between 35 and 40mph. Not sure how thorough he investigated but I really think it would be tied to rpm not mph.

It would be getting very little torque to the ground in top gear with a tall diff. Drag will win out well before top speed with that tall of a diff.

Yes and no. Horsepower is a pretty good predictor of top speed, but the gear ratios still need to be appropriately chosen for the car to accelerate at all. If it can't generate enough torque (and thus force) to overcome all the various manifestations of frictional losses, it's not going to increase speed.

I mean, IMHO it just goes along with the conversation. It'd be one thing if it asked how fast you've gone on the track specifically, but since the majority of responses have been on public roads there brings with it the safety/consequences and concerns that many have or have learned to be wary of.

They are all interconnected. TORQUE is a force, WORK is force done over a distance, POWER is work done divided by time. For a car, whose sole purpose is to convert energy into motion, POWER = SPEED.

Changing the gearing doesn't create more torque, it merely changes the rpm of the engine that corresponds to the rpm of the wheels.

I think the most important thing going these speeds are tires. I'd never do this on cheap tires. I only run Y rated tires rated to 186mph. When doing logs in my 335 I top out 3rd around 110 almost weekly. It's hard not to just keep going haha. Had my 335 much higher than the ZHP though. Hard to not when it pulls so hard over 100.

Btw always done on a 1.6 mile straight level section of highway. Usually in the early morning when no one else is in sight, my lane or opposing lane. Never speed a lot when others are around.

Yeah there's no way I'm speeding when I go home to VA. The Commonwealth has no lenience towards that activity. NM however.. I stay about 5 over most of the time but sheer desolation is a fitting way to describe the roads out here.. Utter.... Endless... Desolation...

Gearing absolutely does change the torque at the wheels. That final torque number, after the gear multiplication, divided by 2pi*wheel radius (to get linear force) is what determines the instantaneous acceleration. The torque you're getting to the wheels is flywheel torque * transmission ratio * diff ratio.

As you stated, power is work / time. Or in other words, F*d/t. If F-total = 0 (in otherwords, force generated by the engine is canceled out by friction), then you're making a net of 0 power. In higher gears, you're getting less torque to the ground while drag is high. Have too tall of a gear with too little flywheel torque, and the car won't be able to accelerate against the drag.

Even my one and only top speed test was on a completely empty stretch of freeway where I could clearly see what was ahead of me for miles (absolutely nothing). Still was somewhat responsible during my immature attempt...

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/26/zynavabu.jpg

Edit: it's not level, it generally has cross winds that scare the frak out of you, and it's an uphill climb back into SoCal. Don't do it on the downhill run into Nevada, cops hang out at the border and destroy all...

WSMR. 20+ miles of open road with no one in sight for me. Military test range so normal police have no jurisdiction and don't patrol it. And the MP's... well they're never there. Once you get out of the dunes it's pretty much flat all the way up to the other side of the basin where it becomes a long distance hill climb. As I stated earlier, I haven't blitzed through there in a long time, back when I had the 3S. The ZHP was toyed with on private land owned by some friends and once was enough for me. These days when I need a drive I find a nice quiet back road. And, because NM speed limits are fairly high, once again....desolation.. One can easily get their jollies off and be well within the speed limit.

Radar detectors shouldn't be used to "avoid" police officers when you're driving but rather to provide more situational awareness while driving.

Whenever I get KA band detections on my detector and there are people driving ahead of me...I almost always see them doing stupid things on the highway. These detections help me prepare for those idiot drivers who always slam on their brakes even while driving at the speed limit whenever they see a patrol car on the side of the road...

Wow there is some serious misinformation on radar detectors here.

Mine has easily saved me jail time on several occasions:

Having driven across the country several times now, I can report that it has detected standing police running Ka 5+ miles out several times (speed went from ~95 - 70)

There was another case where me and my speeding buddy (random guy) were driving across Texas both doing ~90. I get a KA signal and slam into the brakes. He speeds past holding his speed. I flash my lights risking my ass trying to warn him of impending doom. He doesn't listen, state trooper running Ka drives past in the other lane, rolls a U-Turn on the highway, flies past me again this time doing triple digits to get this guy in the ass (he did).

Mountain roads, I get a good signal on a downhill straight a couple seconds before the officer rolls around the corner at the bottom giving me time to break.

Not to mention the countless times in the city where it's wise to shave 5 mph off to avoid a speeding ticket.

Considering some of these scenarios could have landed me in jail; and avoiding a single infraction and the radar detector pays itself, I don't see how any driver who occasionally tempts the speed limit can justify not having one.

Rovert
09-03-2014, 07:04 AM
I didn't have one for ten years. Whatever tickets I was served was because I deserved it. But after getting the ///M I knew I'd probably be targeted. Being caught going 25MPH over the speed limit here causes a car to be impounded for a week, driver's license deactivated for a week, speeding fines, towing, storage fee, and license reissue fees which is entrapment with an ///M. LOL. So I hardwire a 9500.

When I borrowed my dad's Valentine One I always felt I drove quicker than normal while not being attentive to police, giving me a false sense of security. Not that speeding is bad, but I've been on both sides. I was served two tickets in the decade of my ZHP ownership. One in the USA and one at home.

I always found places to open her up!! I hope to find them safely with the new car!

I have found, at least during the 2014 season, that I'm more targeted while driving my ZHP than I am when driving my ///M. Even though both cars are lowered and stanced.... the Imola ZHP w/ 35% window tint seems to do the trick. Stephen, I get pulled over all the time whether I'm driving my ///M or ZHP (lately more in the ZHP). Part of the problem where I live (Rhode Island) is that window tints are illegal in this state. Can you believe that?!?!?!? Anyway, this is something I have been living with and to make things harder on me I suppose... is that both my cars are lowered and stanced for "that look" and I happen to love how my cars are set up. Unfortunately, the police seem to think whenever they see either of my BMWs they think a 24yo is driving the car... On the most part when I tell the police officer that one of my best friends happens to be a patrol officer, they relax and then tell me that they love how my car is set up. Yeah, I get that a lot from them... then we go off onto a nice discussion about what I have done ;)

I now have a medical slip allowing me to have window tints (allowed as long as you have a medical slip) so I don't go around speeding too often because of how my cars are set up. Actually... I'm kinda enjoying looking at people as they check out my rides ;)

After hearing about a few ZHPs getting totalled here I have changed my driving style and am more "chill" these days....pretty much driving the speed of traffic and getting off the highways as soon as possible....

140 mph in my Z4M Coupe.

On a closed road course track. With a helmet, and a certified instructor in the passenger seat.

Sorry, I'm about to sound like a real dick here, but anyone who drives stupid on the street, it will catch up to them one way or another. There are plenty of venues out there to get your need for speed in a safe, controlled environment

I'm usually chill in mine, but I still need to play with it. I agree with your assessment of driving after those situations, but you can't let create fear. Things happen. I've seen more capable cars get destroyed from weird accidents. That's why they're called accidents. Ok I'll get off the soapbox

But not all of them are liked by everyone. I'll say it that way instead of being crude.

EDIT: Oh who cares, he annoy's the F out of me! There, I said it! But I still enjoy watching the show from time to time, it is entertaining.

This. One can't live in fear. If it's going to happen, it's probably going to happen anyway. I believe in these things...
So I will continue to enjoy this car for everything it's worth; I will never stop tracking!

Yesterday morning I found myself going 55 in a 65 zone in my ZHP....driving on the right hand side of the highway...... was listening to some jazz and guess I zoned into the music chillin'.... next thing I knew people were passing me and that's when I realized I was going way too slow so I sped back up ;) Fortunately no Prius or Cube passed me by.....

a guy i worked for like 20 years ago had a 3, 5 & 7 series one time while trying to get onto the hwy (Atl. traffic runs fast or at a 5 mph) he hammered it(3 series) on the ramp to try to get into traffic and got pulled over the officer asked him how fast he thought he was going down the ramp and he told the officer Oh i think about 110 cop laughed and said no but you were doing 95 and told him to slow it down (no ticket)
