I finally sold my e24 so the Zhp is off the chopping block. I had put put both cars up For Sale and decided which ever car sold first we would be keeping the other one. So I am flying back down to Baton Rouge this weekend to bring the Zhp back to Memphis once again.
I want to thank Winfred at German automotive for helping me out with some repairs to the car that I didn't want to do without access to a lift . Sorry for the hiatus but I wasn't sure what direction our Bmw ownership was going to take.So my E24 is gone and momma gets her Zhp. :) Now anyone looking for a 95 E38 740i ? lol

Johnny, glad to hear that you're keeping the ZHP. It's a great car. In the long run it would have been the cheaper car to maintain, too.
Be sure to put your E38 up for sale in the non-ZHP classifieds.

I disagree. The cost of a part for a ZHP is about 3x the cost of a part for an older Bimmer. Depends on the car, I guess. This is definitely true for an E30, dunno about an E24, but I would figure the same logic applies.

I'd think it's harder, and more expensive, to find E24 parts. That's my thinking. I'll ask my buddy, though, who has been working on these cars for 20 years.
You could be right, BP. Will see what pal says. Now I am curious.

Depends on what parts you are referring to. I'm talking about general maintenance parts, which are plentiful. Compared to the E46, they're significantly cheaper, even new parts.
(Once again, for E30's this is true. Probably E24s as well. )

My buddy says that it would be close and it could be about the same in the long run.
He says that that big 6 motor (3.5 liter) on the E24 requires a valve adjustment at every inspection II. He said that it's recommended that you do a fuel filter replacement more often than the E46.
He says that if you're doing your own work, and not getting charged for the shop time that may be required on the E24, you could be better off with the E24. However, he says that most people are not going to turn their own wrenches.
As for parts, he says they're generally comparable -- with E24 parts being slightly cheaper.
So, turn your own wrenches? It's probably cheaper to own the E24. You have to pay someone to do the work on the E24? About the same as an E46.
