I’ve been working a lot of hours and the wife’s been complaining about a few different issues on her 2006 Vert that has 69K on it so, we headed to BMW of Chattanooga yesterday to get it checked out.

Now the decision is to keep it and drop some serious coin and time (that I don’t currently have) or, trade it for a newer CPO or a new lease.

Things adding to my thoughts:

A.We live in the middle of know wear with no family or friends near and she drives into town when I'm sleeping (I work 3rd shift).

B.She makes 600 to 1200 mile road trips alone a few times a year

Issues:

1.When turning the ignition key to the start position nothing happens. Do it 2, 3, or 4 times and the starter engages and it starts.

a.Diagnosis: bad starter, parts $295.00, labor 5 hours (you’re on borrowed time)

2.Belts squealing on start up

a.Diagnosis: new Tensioner & Idler Pulley’s, parts &65.00 labor few hours

Other findings

3. Valve cover gasket leaking

a.Diagnosis: replace, parts $135.00 labor, a few hours

4.Oil Filter Housing leaking, parts $15.00 labor a few hours

Other known issues

5.Hawk Ceramic Pads squeal too much for her and need to be changed to something quieter.

a.Diagnosis: replace pads, parts $44.95, labor 1+ hours

6.Replaced the rear tires last year with Michelin Pilot Super Sport,

a.Diagnosis: replace fronts, tires $296.00, shipping $30.92, mounting $50.00 -$60.00

7.Car has 70,00 miles

a.Diagnosis: replace water pump, part & coolant $150.00 labor 3 hour

A Sunday at Dane's should get about half of that cleared up! I vote keep it.

Guy, the dealer is going to add that up and say $3-4K in repairs needed. Then he'll find a pricing guide (most likely black Bood) and offer you $10K minus the repairs. Don't take if, I'll give you what they offer.

Keep dude. I had much more than that wrong. Did 90% of it myself and spent around $1,800. I still have suspension work to be done. 157k and I won't let her go until over 200k. No reason. Engine, interior, and transmission still great.

I have a little rust though... bums me out. I bought the car in NH and didn't have much choice at the time.

I may get another e46 when this one is done and do it all again. Ut's a toss up between an e92 and another 330ci or M3.

As long as we are not just 'rehashing the bashing', this could and should be a useful thread.

The starters the main issue. It could fail at any time and could be some what difficult including pulling of the exhaust manifold. I need to look deeper into that process and see exactly what's required.

I've got all the tools but not the time for a road trip so, maybe Dane can head to Tennessee and help :)

Removing the manifolds isn't too hard. Been down that road a few weeks ago.

Exhaust manifolds need to come off for what? You can do the starter from underneath without too much hassle.

Starter is a tight fit but removing exhaust manifolds won't help at all as they're on opposite sides of the engine. Removing intake manifold makes it easier to get to the starter, so I hear--I replaced my starter without removing either manifold. There is a good DIY for this in the DIY section. It did take me a lot of time though, and I worked on it from both above and below. Most do the starter just from above or just from below.

The VCG and OFHG are not critical--they're annoying but they don't reduce the reliability of the car or risk leaving you stranded, as long as you check the oil level every few weeks.

Whatever makes the misses happy and feel safe. I certainly think this car can be brought to that state with a bit of maintenance.

Joop replaced his starter in a parking lot. Though he is Superman, I'm not scared of this job.

I'm not scared of the job, it's just the time with my busy scheduled. Contemplating doing the starter over the holiday weekend. Then the pulley's and a water pump. After that I still have the oil leaks, brakes and new tires.

I suggest doing the OFHG and pulleys at the same time, and probably water pump too. You have to remove the serpentine belt and usually remove alternator to do the OFHG. The only catch is if you're going to do the water pump, then you might want to do the rest of the cooling system too since you'll be draining at least halfway before you take out the water pump. Welcome to "While you're in there"!

The VCG is a separate from the OFHG, cooling system, brakes, etc. The one item that makes the most sense to combine with VCG is VANOS seals, or spark plugs, though spark plugs can always be done later without removing the valve cover.

Brake pads are separate and easy as long as you have the following items:
1) Hex socket to remove caliper bolts (maybe 7mm?)
2) Brake cylinder pusher or C-clamp to push caliper piston back in to fit new pads
3) Two flat blade screwdrivers (or one screwdriver and something else to use as lever) to remove caliper clips

It does t sound all that bad. You can do most all of the work yourself. I replaced my water pump about 6 months ago, and did my brakes yesterday. I would check with a shop for tires. I got mine at discount tire and it totaled 280 for my tires out the door. Lifetime rotation and balance and free replacement if they can't be repaired. Valve cover gasket isn't a bad one, and neither is the oil housing gasket. The only thing I wouldn't know how to do is the starter. I hear it's a PITA, and it's better off to have a shop do it. Other than that there are some great DIY's. Good luck!

Have you tried to find an independent shop to do what you do not have tools or time to do yourself? I found an independent shop that lets me buy parts and they do the work for an hourly rate. Between my civilian career and my National Guard career - I cannot justify the time to deal with working on my car so the indie gets some of my money. I would keep the car - only thing unusual is the starter - other stuff you listed is maintenance.

Little update; we're looking at two new 2014 328IX's in the morning. With her working from home and light use, a 36 month 30K mile is very doable money wise. The trade offer we got before the repair quote and they will honor that and I also get a $1000 discount on new 3 series threw work.

My main concern is for her safety when she makes those 1000+ mile road trips alone. So, even with everything fixed and the car in perfect working order I still won't have 24hour free roadside assistance and piece of mind.

I'll posts a final update tomorrow. It aint over till
It's over. :)
