I believe they are interchangeable. All you need is the siren, the motion sensor, and the tilt sensor. After install, it will need to be activated using NCS Expert or bringing it to a dealer.

My dad's E39 has the same siren as my ZHP. There are two types. We both have the new style, but his E39 is a bit louder due to the location of the sirens. (The E46 buries it next to the firewall.)

The easiest way to tell which one you have is the old style uses a Ni-Cd battery, and is labelled as such. The new style uses a Ni-Mh battery, and is also labelled as such.
