I want to hardwire my Escort 8500 X50. There is a Hardwire with the smart cable mute button cord for $30. I don't want to do any sobering or drilling any holes. My only questions is I don't want to have to reach up toward the rear view mirror to mute the radar detector. I basically want the mute button cord ran down the pillar. All the DIYs I find people either don't have the mute button cord or there either sticking all the cords back up into the reading light compartment thing. Has anyone done this or have any suggestions. Ive seen people use the backup sensor fuse. Since I don't have back up sensors I wouldn't be opposed to doing it this way. I just don't want a fuse blown and causing something catastrophic. Please help! Even if you just find a video with someone using the smart wire with the mute button cord it would be of much help!

Are you asking us for suggestions as to where you can run the cable?

I have mine wired down the a pillar under the steering wheel column and it sits right on top of the wheel housing behind the actual steering wheel (in front of the cluster).

Previous owner did this, not me. Don't do this. It sucks to reach through the wheel to mute. I would wire behind the dash to the center console or something. You'd be drilling or just have it velcro'd somewhere. I'll take a pic of mine later.

Kinda. I'm just confused altogether. I would understand how to do it if I didn't want the mute button. But I need the mute button because It goes off annoyingly at every Walgreens, grocer store, ect. I understand how you clamp a wire to like the blue green wire in the reading light housing but anything electrical seems to go over my head. I'd like Just run something from behind the rear view mirror through the glove box (no drilling) and have the mute button by the cigarette lighter

Damn wish I had a photo handy.

I poked a hole in my ashtray and made a custom little stealth location out of it. No drill required.

Yes and have had it in 5 different cars since 2007. Totally worth it.

I have mine hardwired, but no separate mute button. My mechanic just warned me to be sure to tap a wire that does not prevent the car's electronics from going to sleep, nor one that is powered up all the time (ie-map light power supply). Mine is actually tapped into the homelink power supply, since it goes on & off with the ignition power.

In terms of running the mute button wire, couldn't you just run it across from the unit tucked up into the front end of the headliner near the windshield, down the A-pillar (behind the trim), and have it wrap around up under the dash? I would think this would be the preferred method, and would make for a very clean. I like Seth's mute button location as it sounds really nice! In for pics Seth! :)

Clever. I was thinking about hijacking the speaker button since I don't ever turn off Harmon Kardon.
