Hey fellas, today is as good of day as any to start this thread for my zhp project. After all this time of ownership, I have now decided that it's time to build this car into a rocketship. The first item has arrived today, now it's time to get into the project. Starting out on this, I will move along a little slower, the wife and I are planning to buy a house towards the end of the year.

Nice man. Get you an air ratchet and plenty of diff extensions and flexi elbows or your life will be bad! Also expect most all of the header bolts to come out when you remove the old ones. Which for me was ideal since I replaced all the bolts anyways. And you can just sink the new ones there's plenty of threads once the new headers are on. Also remove the heat shields on the old ones when removing and new ones when reinstalling, makes the job much easier.

Lol...I can't imagine the amount of oversized tools you must have. Will likely feel like working on R/c cars with normal sized car tools...

Yea it's definitely like that at times, but you'd be surprised if you saw how tight some spaces were in some of cat's machines. As a tech, a diverse set of tools is a must

Curious to see how your install goes. I just received the same set of headers yesterday and have them sitting at my shop. Just waiting to get the motivation to tackle this project. I've read conflicting reviews about fitment and am not really excited about possibly having to start cutting and welding...especially on Monday morning after this weekend. haha

TigerTater purchased the same set. And his are in, took him 7 hours to complete. I am about 3.5 hours into it and have the stock manifolds ready to come out. The only thing holding me up is removing the o2 sensors. They are being a pain in the arse. I should have this whooped tomorrow. Time for some moonshine now!

I'm hoping to be able to get mine done in 4-5 hours. Access to a lift and a ton of Snap-On tools should hopefully make things a bit easier. I wish I would've had these when I did my head gasket as it would've given me a hell of a lot better access with the head off. Out of curiosity do both of your headers have a serial number etched into them? My long one does but my short one does not, I found that to be a bit strange as I had read elsewhere that all headers are etched for quality control.

+1. It's not a matter of access per say but it's a tedious job especially if your going to be changing header bolt studs...it helps to have two ppl one below and one above with an air ratchet to run the bolts in. You have to use two nuts run into each other to act as a jam nut...just time consuming. I'm not sure if mine have serial numbers? Where would they be located? Did you drop the engine mount Matt?

The serial numbers are on the side of the output flange...well they are supposed to be anyway but as I said only one of mine has it. Hopefully it's not missing it due to being a reject. :-/
I've done an e36 before that was rusted together pretty damn good in about 8 hours(2 of which were spent mostly swearing, throwing thing, and hitting crap out of frustration) and my E46 has ZERO rust or corrosion on it so I know I won't have to worry about shearing any rusty bolts or stripping nuts out. We shall see though....I'm going to pray for a somewhat cool day next week some time to jump on this. It's been hotter than hell down here in south Florida lately and I can't even imagine how miserable this project will be with sweaty greasy hands and no grip on anything.

I'm going to be leaving the plugs in the secondary O2 sensors and using a sim since they will just throw a code anyway...if the sensors become too much of a pain I'll just take the easy route and hack 'em off. haha

Probably be easier to manage, but considering this is a one time install, do you think it's worth the trouble?

From a threading standpoint, I like the bolts better than the studs. From a strength standpoint the studs are probably stronger. When it comes to installation the bolts are the way to go. And with how much strength is realistically needed, the bolts are a no brainer.

You've already put all new studs and nuts on already? If that's the case I wouldn't think it's necessary to un-do all of that work just to switch to bolts? (Plus a huge waste of $$) Unless you think your leak is because of a gap caused by the headers not being tightened enough. In that case I would just retorque them now. Mine tightened down another 2-3 threads after driving 50 miles.

Yea man, its def got some bite to it after about 3k rmp. If you had a leak you would know it..I had a leak on my old truck when I first installed the headers on it...its like a whispy sound that syncs with the cylinder its near by....theres a sound that the headers make when your cruising or just getting on the gas its sounds similar to pre-detonation or pinging right under the passenger seat. Thats just what headers sound like flowing through the new smooth tubes.

I DD mine. Its not that loud at normal operating RPM's < 3500. Check my build thread I made a video of my setup (headers, stock exhaust). Its a lot of WOT pulls, but some just driving around. I think it sounds very nice just cruising. I was actually considering maybe adding an x pipe and changing out a resonator to get some more sound.

Did mine today in about 4 hours; it really wasn't bad at all. I took the exhaust off completely(extremely helpful when it came time to line the headers up), the washer fluid reservoir, secondary air pump, and also removed the A/C line that runs along that side. Didn't run into any snags at all. I HIGHLY recommend putting the 02 sensors in the pipes before trying to install as once they're in position it's nearly impossible to get to them. I used new OEM gaskets as the ones provided are....well...shit. Overall, not anywhere near as difficult as people make it sound.

Yea the gaskets the headers came with were a joke....I just don't trust paper wedged between two sheets of aluminum foil to seal properly. hahaha
I've only put about 20-25 miles on mine since finishing up and no CEL yet on my end either; I'm also surprised by that considering BMW's are usually very quick to throw codes. We had a 335 in the shop on Friday that would throw a ton of codes literally as soon as you hit WOT, just needed a CAS reset and ran smooth as silk...but goes to show how finicky Bimmers can be.
I'm hoping for clearer weather tomorrow so I can go for a nice drive and actually bring the car above 4500 RPM's...was raining all day and then I took a cab to my buddies and back to watch the Mayweather fight. I'm itching to open it up and see how it sounds under load at higher RPM's. Hopefully I get my wish for good weather so I can get some hard miles racked up and re-torque everything when I get to the shop monday morning.
How did your headers line up with your exhaust? My lower flanges were rotated about 10 degrees off from the oem catback flanges, nothing major but enough to require a tire bar and a friend to get the bolts to line up.
Santacruzslick
05-03-2014, 10:12 PM
...also, waiting for the CEL to pop up and then it's time for an Active Autowerke tune and a Simon programmer...and to think I was going to leave this car alone; that ended quickly. Damn mod bug.....it's highly contagious; especially when you spend all day modding other peoples cars.

Mine were off by about the same, when I put the headers onto the head I didn't tighten them down completely, gave myself wiggle room to line up the midpipes. Following by torquing everything down.

Up next for the zhp will be strut bar and new roundels (current front is chipped). Following all that will be brakes and before anyone says anything, yes I have contacted Ray. I'm going with his set, cross drilled and slotted rotors with hawk pads

I think it finally went out Sunday :( I'll be sure to keep y'all updated, MRI coming up Monday

I'm medicated currently and been working from home this week. The MRI will point the direction I will need to go next. But this is the 3rd time on my spine. MMA is a big contribution to why I'm in this situation. Hopefully I won't née surgery again, but regardless of what I need, I want it fixed

I feel ya. My back is a lot better than it used to be. I went through facet injections in the upper and also had disc and facet injections in the lower. I tried prolotherapy as well. I think by far the most painful part was the discogram dye injection--WOW that was bad. I think the prolo, prayer and yoga/strengthening of my core have finally helped. Hang in there and keep up the PT.

Since my ZHP is really lowered, yes. My carbon fiber Arqray lip took a serious beating last winter but I love this style lip. I will go one more winter before discarding this lip for a new carbon fiber Arqray lip next season....
Even in frp, this lip will change the look of your ZHP for the better in my opinion but I'm more for a full lip look over the splitter look.
I think if you're close to stock ride height, you should be okay on the most part :thumbsup

Adjustability is awesome. I got the perfect ride height with these coilovers and the ride quality is superb. Now that I have these coilovers installed in my ZHP, I tend to favor my ZHP for daily commuting to and from work on a daily basis.
So much somthat sometimes I have to "relearn" how to drive my ///M.

When your wheel dries, get a soft brush and go over the alcantara lightly. It will bring it back close to when it was brand new. That's what I do with my Coby wheel after cleaning it :)

Thanks. They do a nice job of giving it the deep disk look considering that the offset is so much different than the e46. I had to use 12mm spacers in the front and 10mm in the back to get her old Breytons to fit my car. They should look really good on your car with say, a 35mm offset...

I shouldn't need spacers with them either. Currently using them with my CSL replica's

maybe this will help when the time comes...
I have CSL replicas on my car now... 8" front 9" rear... 35mm offset all around. I get a slight rub in the back with rolled fenders and H&R sport springs and the front could use a few less mm offset if I wanted it more aggressive...

My CSL's are same widths, but I think mine are a smaller offset. Currently sitting on stock suspension (for now, going with BC Coilovers) with 15mm spacers on front and 5mm rear.

I have my 3rd coming up a week from Thursday (10-26). It doesn't make a big difference, the somewhat relief it provides lasts me roughly a couple weeks. My situation is becoming worse at a rapid pace, and I just need the injection to provide enough relief so I can travel to Omaha for my friend's wedding.
