unfortunately this is the way of used wheels - unless you can have them checked, you really have no idea what you're getting. i've bought my share of bent wheels... my next set will be new. tired of the gamble.

Regardless, I had them dropped off at Precision Wheel Service in North Branford. He put them on the balancing machine and said "yeah no problem, I'll try to have them ready by the end of tomorrow". He didn't seem at all challenged by it so hopefully it'll be as good as new. I'm not happy about having to pay $240 to fix them but at this point, IDFC. I just want them on the car before I drive down to Jersey; putting miles on my track tires is painful.

That's good to hear that you have no rubbing. I was afraid of that since my car is low but am happy to report that the only time I get any rubbing is on the deepest and most violent of dips, and even then it's not bad. Since I only hit one of those once in a blue moon, that is perfectly acceptable. :thumbsup

Correct. Silver cube effect trim and Black cube effect trim. Those are the two choices. Until I personally see P/Ns, the supposed "Titan cube effect trim" is not real. However...with paint you can make it any color you desire.

The only two kinds of silver cube trim are used and new. New looks like what mine looks like after being sprayed. Used is much lighter and looks actual silver instead of silvergrey.

I honestly don't remember which version of DupliColor it was. It was straight color; I don't think anything special was mixed in... if it had the lacquer, it would be shiny, correct? If so, then mine is the one without the mix because it is not shiny.

I had some bad experience with Duplicolor nozzle. It wasn't spraying well and dripping paint all over the place. I returned it back to the store to get another and it did the same thing. My 5 cents.

My suggestion overall is to use paint stripper to remove all the old stuff and scrub it clean. I did about 3 thin layers and when I messed up I use the paint remover to do it again. Overall I messed up on one piece however the results are really nice.

Time to update with the completed install. I have to say I am truly impressed with this color combo of Imola Red on Natural Brown. It definitely gives the car a higher class feel, all the while maintaining the aggressive look on the exterior. It's nice to have it feel a little bit lighter inside the car at night so it's not quite as depressingly dark. It most definitely brought out some "flavor" in Wobz. :thumbsup

I will update with much nicer photos down the road once the car is clean and I have some time for my Canon.

I just need to decide what to do with my trim. Now that NB is in there, I don't think the silver cube works well with it. It feels like it clashes with the brown. What do you all think?

Thanks guys! It seems there are mixed opinions on which trim would go best, but overall the general consensus is that silver isn't ideal. I tend to agree with this. The more I look at it, the more awkward the silver looks next to the brown. That's tough because I reeeeeeeeeeeally like silver cube, and wanted it since I got my car. Also, the silver cube was a gift from my dear friend Charlie so it has value to me. I won't sell the silver cube, even if I decide to swap it out because of this.

I still have most of my black cube trim, so I could just swap it at will. The only piece I'm missing is the passenger dash piece because it was repainted to replace my broken silver cube piece. Anyone have a line on one?

I also have a full set of wood trim that came with the interior purchase, but I'm not a big fan of wood. I still want this car to keep its ZHP identity, and cube trim is a big part of that for me. As nice as birch sounds, that's more reserved for a luxury car with less sporting credentials, IMO. Since NB was an option on ZHPs, it still fits the bill. I will still install some pieces later this week and see if I like it. Who knows... I've got a couple of people that want to buy the set already so that's a more likely route.

Back story:
Bought my car with alcantara, because that's what I wanted. Natural Brown really hadn't struck me yet. In fact, the first ZHP I test drove was Imola on Natural Brown, with navigation and pretty much all the cool options. I wasn't all that familiar with E46 optioning yet, so thinking I could easily just get another one just like it, I kept looking. I didn't realize how rare NB on Imola was. I didn't buy that one because the guy couldn't even answer the question "At what interval do you do oil changes?", and the car had higher mileage than I wanted (over 90k), didn't have the stock wheels, and obviously wasn't as taken care of as it should've been. The seller didn't give me the warm and fuzzies about the car.

I bought my car very shortly afterwards. Then I started seeing all the options that E46's had and started to drool over this interior, kicking myself for not buying the first one. I'm kind of glad I didn't buy that one, because my car has been trouble free. The only issues I've had with it were my fault entirely.
I've been trying to get this interior since the year I bought it, 2010. Over the years I've attempted to trade with numerous people, most of them saying no. A couple have entertained the idea, and then they changed their minds (not surprisingly). I've even gone as far as considering buying Bill's rear seats and door cards he was selling and then trying to find the front sport seats separately, but I knew it was too much of a risk. Finally, Derek posted up this interior for sale on here almost 2 months ago and had to jump on it immediately. I didn't even think about it, I just jumped. I made it work, despite some struggles, but it's here now and that's all that matters.

I love the uniqueness and rarity of this color combo. It's one of those insanely rare color combos that people just don't order, probably because of resale value and they want to be "safe" when ordering their car. Most people get silver, black, or grey cars with black or grey interiors. Me? No, I like the stuff that most people don't get, either due to price or it not being as "safe".

In this case, I think most people didn't get Imola on Natural Brown because let's face it; the Performance Package was expensive enough. To add the Premium Package to that is rarity. Plus, cloth on alcantara is just plain COOL! Most people are probably content with that. I love my cloth/alcantara interior, but I stress way too much over wearing the alcantara bolsters (worrying about wearing the alcantara is why I had to quickly sell my alcantara wheel shortly after getting it). I entered and exited my car in the most contorted ways trying not to rub the alcantara bolsters. I still do it with the leather, but it's a lot easier because I can just slide in and out instead of having to worry about "pushing" myself in due to the grippy cloth.

Only time will tell how these will hold up on the track, but I have convinced myself that it's a moot point because I plan on buying myself a harness to use for track days. With the harness, I'm not sliding anywhere!

Selling your alcantara interior should be very easy and you should recoup most of your investment in the NB. You must feel like you're driving a new car... If you already have black interior, then that should work, as long as the seat handles don't bother you. Keep in mind, the front seats will be a different type of leather than the rest of your interior. That may or may not bother you but is something to think about.

The new interior in Wobz looks great man! You know my feelings on the silver cubes with this combo, but I may be just a little bit biased. I say give it some time to mesh, and the uniqueness may just win you over. I find that this setup is never boring to the eye. If you don't like silver and want to stay ZHP authentic, it sounds like it's back to black. If straying a bit were an option, what about wrapping the trim with one layer of real carbon fiber? Bet that would look stunning if properly done.

My old coworker was selling his ZCP which happened to have an SPG fully mounted in. I offered him a price I would be willing to pay and to my surprised face, he actually accepted it. Let's just say it was nowhere near the $1500 for the seat+mounts.

As far as the quickfit pro holding me in, I have to say it does a very good job with the should belts. I do admit the side lap bolsters did not hold me in as well as I would've liked but it does a very good job with the OEM seat. The best part was that the belts were detachable and could be stored in the trunk. One thing I should note is the quick fit pro harness did pinch the stomach a little bit if you tighten the shoulder belts too early.

Overall, I would do it again if I wanted OEM seats and a harness. I am considering replacing the SPG with something more "daily-friendly" and it may come along to getting the quickfit pro again. The quickfit pro is 100bucks more but it works with HANS device and has a better receptacle for the buckle. If submarining is a problem you can install an anti sub belt with VAC sub bracket. :)

At this point, the interior is fully installed, and a problem has presented itself.
There is an extremely annoying creak coming from the rear driver's side fold-down seat. It creaks a lot over every single little bump in the road. Since my car is lowered, it's stiffer, so the creaking is almost non-stop.

I've narrowed it down to that side fold-down rear seat back because it no longer creaks when it's folded down. So far it looks like it's originating around where the latch catch is, so I'm going to be experimenting with solutions tonight.

Apparently this is a common issue and the solution is to put some tape or some kind of foam or wrap around the catch, not allowing it to move around when latched. Hopefully that resolves the issue.

I've narrowed it down to that side fold-down rear seat back because it no longer creaks when it's folded down. So far it looks like it's originating around where the latch catch is, so I'm going to be experimenting with solutions tonight.

Apparently this is a common issue and the solution is to put some tape or some kind of foam or wrap around the catch, not allowing it to move around when latched. Hopefully that resolves the issue.

While I agree with you that cubes are a must on a ZHP, I'd have to say that whether silver or black is better entirely depends on what interior you have. I'd never ever, ever, ever have silver cubes on a grey or beige interior, but wouldn't consider anything else on a black or alcantara interior. Natural Brown seems to be the only interior for E46 sedans that I can't put my finger on in terms of best trim color!

Ideally I'd like to have shadow cube for this interior, which is what I was originally going for when refinishing my silver. It just so happens the silver cube turned out to be actual silver instead of a darker shade like the can suggested!

This rear seat creak is driving me up a wall.
I got home today and took a look at it. I simply cannot find the reason why it is creaking. Options are: 1) plastic that is just in front of the rear deck and what the seats rest on, 2) latch(es)

The problem lies with neither of those items. The plastic is nice and snug and doesn't creak when I tap all over it. Also, the passenger-side rear seat back does not rattle, and it sits perfectly snug against the plastic with no gap when viewed from the top. The driver's side, however, creaks when it is upright locked into position, mainly from the middle headrest area. If I push down on it, it creaks very loudly, and can guarantee that is where the creaking is occuring. It does not creak when I push down on that piece from the bolster side. Also, when it's up and locked into place, there is a noticeable gap between the seat and the plastic it's supposed to rest on, enough of a gap that would otherwise make me think that it's not latching properly. This is not the case, as I am unable to fold the seat down when it's like this and it does not move at all when I try to move the seat back and forth, so it is definitely latched properly.

I know it's not the latch because my previous seat back did not creak at all. This also rules out the plastic.

What am I left with???????

One potential solution mentioned on an M3 forum is to put tape around the latch catch on the seat back. I did this to no avail. If anything, it creaks just as loud and is even harder to pull the seat down to fold it.

It most definitely is not the rear deck. That stays silent when I push down on it at various points.

There is no creak when the driver's side rear seat is folded down.

It's funny you say that. I texted my BMW tech friend a while ago asking him about this and the first thing he said was remove the headrest and go for a drive. I just came back from that drive not too long ago... the creaking was gone! After I reinstalled the headrest and went for the same drive, the sound hasn't returned. I'm hoping it holds up. We'll see tomorrow on my 1+ hour drive to and from work and see if it comes back, as that's when it was creaking constantly.

That plastic rail I mentioned previously is a common cause on the M3 threads I've been sifting through. Might want to check those. Also check the headrests, as I've learned today. :)

So I took apart my rear seat a few nights ago to see if I could pinpoint the issue. I removed the plastic guard along the top edge of the seat back hoping that maybe taking it off and putting back on again would help. The rear seat isn't sitting correctly when latched into place and that bothers me because it's installed correctly, so I can only assume it's twisted in some way...

Regardless, after taking it apart and putting it back in, I pushed under the rear headrest and it still creaked like a mofo. I gave up for the night.
The next morning I drove it, and the creaking was gone... it's the weirdest thing. It seems to come and go. It hasn't creaked in a couple of days now. It will still creak if I push it under the rear headrest, but it doesn't seem to creak while driving. Sometimes I'll hear something minor creaking back there, but that creak sounds more like the rear deck than the seat.

I really hope it's not environmental; that would be extremely difficult to diagnose.

The rattle hasn't returned yet! I folded my seats down yesterday to put wheels in the car that I have to get tires dismounted from; I'm hoping when I go pick up my car from the shop, I can fold the seats back and have no rattle. We'll see later today. I'm more concerned with my CSB being all set!

You may want to call Schroth and message the EBay guy. E36 mounts to both rear factory buckles and the E46 needs to add schroth buckle receptacle on the c pillar side. Make sure the Ebay guy has the part.

Otherwise if you want a pair of the regular quick-fits.

I'd be better off buying an E46 one. The black "pair" looks quite enticing for $250; a single new driver's side is $245, which also isn't bad since that's all I really need. I don't need the capabilities of the Pro since I don't plan on getting a HANS device. Getting the pair would mean I'm being nice to anyone who sits in the passenger seat. :)

I will certainly be watching the eBay listing for the black pair. If the price doesn't go up much I'll buy it. Otherwise, I'll just order a single driver's side new from Schroth. Check the rules for the groups that organize your track events. Many require the same restraints for both driver and passenger.

Also, be very careful buying used safety equipment. Unless you personally know the seller I would be extremely cautious. Stuff happens. If it does you need the equipment to work. It simply isn't worth the risk to save a few bucks. Skip one event, one mod or dinners out for a couple months. There are plenty of other ways to save a few hundred dollars.

Also depending on the number of events you plan to do, don't immediately discount a HANS device. I've spoken with folks that had minor neck injuries from light incidents. I don't know the recommended protocol but I will seriously consider a HANS when I buy my next helmet in a couple years.

Thanks for the concern, but they're fine. I received the belts earlier in the week and am happy to report that they look almost new. The belts aren't frayed anywhere and the buckles work perfectly. There are no chips in any of the plastic pieces. I'm very happy with what I paid for them and they will serve me just fine.

I don't do that many events, only about 3 per year. Even then I don't push myself beyond my capabilities. I've never had an off course event in the 7 years I've been doing track events probably because I'm not willing to push the boundaries quite that far on my only car. I know, shit happens, but for now this will have to do. It most certainly is better than if I just kept stock seat belts. Either way, a HANS device isn't in my future for now, but if I ever do get a dedicated track car, I will most certainly be installing a roll cage with the proper seats, harness, and HANS device. That car will see no limits with regards to safety as it won't be driven anywhere else. :)



On an unrelated note, I did pick up a pair of stalks from one of the members here. Unfortunately the stalks aren't exactly in the shape I was hoping for with regards to the paint on them. The turn signal stalk has the paint almost completely worn off the top part of it, so I might have to buy this piece new later on. They are excellent "mechanically" so at least they'd be good backups in case one of mine go bad.

I was thinking of getting started on my interior refresh project once the car is paid off. There are a number of things that I want to refresh as I love having a new looking interior. These things include:

New center console and sunglasses tray cover
New M3 tri-stitch leather steering wheel
New shift boot and F10/F80 shift knob
New center vent (crack in the upper left corner)
Replace all of the dash orange inserts (for the 3rd time this year, sheesh)
New turn signal stalk
New A, B, and C pillars
Repaint the rear deck and "reinforce" with cotton sheets per the recommendation of Tony (so it doesn't creak anymore)
Redye certain parts of the seats as they have lighter shades in some spots

I will be needing new speakers as mine are pretty shot from the "new" door panels. I don't think I'd want to waste the time and swap the speakers from cloth door panels as those also have lots of miles on them, though they work perfectly. I might as well upgrade all in one shot.

Haven't yet decided on whether I want to reinstall my arm rest and make that bolt go back in or if I should just make the armrest delete official and get the kit for it. I do kind of miss it even though it's been off for a long time due to not being able to reinstall it.
My driver's side seat belt retractor needs some serious help. I have to babysit it while the seat belt retracts otherwise it won't retrack properly. I need to disassemble it and clean it.

So, what I said to Tony yesterday, well that all went out the window after work. So I received the driveshaft this week and yesterday when I went to go make my appointment to get it done, somehow I ended up making an appointment to not only install the driveshaft and a new CSB, but also to replace the shifter bushings, tranny mounts, and to install a BMW Performance shifter kit. I realized that all that stuff needs to get done while everything's taken apart, and as much as I didn't want to spend the money, at least now I can get it done without having to pay for labor again to do all of that. Derek's driveshaft allowed all of this to happen, so while saving money didn't quite work out, I'm getting a lot more bang for my buck than I would have originally. So, ultimately, it all worked out anyway...

BTW, BMW is having a fire sale on their Performance shifter kit. You get the Performance shifter, alcantara shift boot, the short shifter lever, and a clip (lol). The price is excellent; $142 plus shipping. I happened to get the kit through my indy for the same price but with much cheaper shipping. Here's a link on ECS's website, but that part number can be referenced and IF a dealer has it, you can buy it locally if you feel inclined. I will be selling the shift knob as I personally don't like it, so if anyone wants it, hit me up...

So, Wobz is back!

Final list of things done:

* Swapped driveshaft with the one Derek provided, as well as my existing Guibo and CSB
* Replaced shifter bushings and shift shaft seal
* M3 transmission mounts
* Install BMW Performance shifter

It looks like my crazy vibrations are no longer, all thanks to Derek. There is so much win going on here. Thanks again man!

Yeah, she's been hurting for well over a year now. The driveshaft was vibrating and didn't realize it was the driveshaft until a few weeks ago.
Finally got it done. So nice to be able to let it rip again.

I don't know. I wouldn't have been able to find out without spending additional $$ to attempt a rebalancing. If that didn't work, that would have been one expensive diagnosis. As I told Derek, "for the price of this replacement driveshaft, I don't really care what was wrong with the old one". ;)

I thought about that, but I know myself. Realistically I'm not going to put the effort in. Even if I convince myself that I will, it never ends up happening. I'd then have to go through shipping it... shipping things is at the very bottom of my list of things I enjoy doing. lol

Having to store it is an entirely different thing!


Might just ask the shop for it even if I don't do anything with it. What do I have to lose?

No no no...just give it to the mahine shop as a "mechanic special." Small cash amount for the drive shaft. They profit on the final sales to some one else. You don't see it again.

So do you think it might have originally been installed incorrectly? Or would the result of that have been a lot more catastrophic?
Remember this all stemmed from when my CSB exploded on the highway and my driveshaft was knocking around the tunnel before I could pull over and get the car towed. It was repaired by "some guy" that my brother knew. I didn't trust him, especially after seeing his shop...

I think it was probably 180 degrees wrong, or just not lined up exactly when csb was replaced. I've done it on the e30 and had similar problems and figured it out the hard way. Is there a difference in design between the driveshafts that I'm not seeing?

Went and installed my new alcantara shift boot that came with the shifter kit. I'm glad it's the same OEM grey as the handbrake boot. It looks so much nicer!

Of course, installing a shift boot is no small feat when it comes to having a lit shift knob like I do. The wiring makes it necessary to remove the knob (partially), the boot (partially), the shift surround trim including the window switch connectors, and the foam that I tucked the wires under. What should take 1 minute instead took me 15 (including the pictures). It's ok though, because having the lit shift knob is totally worth it. Thanks Charlie!

Here is the old boot. It's somewhat crusty; really it isn't in bad shape, just has some pilling on it that has started to bother me. I thought about replacing it with a leather one, but I wanted to retain *some* of the ZHP's original interior! :)

There we go, new one installed. This is the neutral shift position with the new BMW Performance shift lever installed. I only took pics of neutral, 1st + 2nd gear, and 5th + 6th gear, to show the distance difference. Unfortunately I didn't think to take before pics, but compare the pics to a stock setup (I'm sure you can find it somewhere) and you'll see the difference.

I do have it, but the wires go beneath all that for a cleaner installation appearance. To remove the boot there is no getting around disconnecting the cables, which requires all of that disassembly to get to.


Now I want short shift...

Weekend project lined up: clean the damn seatbelt roller thingy.
It takes me forever to "guide" my seatbelt back into place after taking it off and I've reached breaking point with the damned thing. It's getting cleaned this weekend!

My buddy tells me that's all that needs to be done to it. I thought this whole time it needed replacing. We shall find out...

A few of the techs told me thats all needed to fix the rolling. You may need to undo the B pillar to do it but it should be fine. OOOORRR you can use your new quickfit harness instead of your stock belts. They are DOT legal :D

Yesterday I picked up a HVAC relocation kit from a local dealer in preparation for the Eonon GA5150 unit I have arriving on Friday. :)
If all goes well, I'll have the Eonon in hand on Friday, ready to roll for an install on Saturday with a space (and perhaps some help) from our resident Charrie! :)

Since there aren't a whole lot of these units out there yet, there isn't any info on how the unit works (common issues, functionality, etc.) on the E46, so I'll try to document as much as I can. I read through Gary's GM5150 thread yesterday and have determined that I should have everything I need to complete the install. I don't have OE nav, so it should be a lot easier to get this done. The one part I decided to skip was the cable that Gary recommended for better radio reception (in the GM5150 thread) because I want to see if this issue is fixed with this revision/model, so if I can avoid having to buy another cable then that'll be a win. If it's still a problem, I'll order it and install it after the fact.



And this time I swear, this IS my last mod until I pay off the car! I mean it this time! :shifty
(I sure hope sales on strut bars don't pop up after the holiday...)

Nice! Looking forward to a GA5150 video!! The install should be very similar to the GM5150, you may need to trim down the radio antenna adapter for clearance is the only thing I can see that might be an issue.

Actually this is a great idea since Tony has experience installing the Eonon unit and backup camera. Having his insights during the install would be of great help for sure although I think BP would like to do the install on Saturday so he has time in case things don't work out for some unforeseen reason to revert back to OEM...

Yes, Saturday is a much safer bet. If something doesn't go well, I must leave with the factory setup fully functioning, so we need some time to revert if needed... I'm expecting this to take all day considering time to take lots of pictures and to get the rear view camera working. Is this a fair estimate?

If you guys think that doing it on Sunday is no sweat, then I'm all for it. We just need a working setup by the time I leave to go home, so the challenge is set. :)

Charlie, is the heated garage bay at work available on a Sunday?

I'm looking forward to helping you with your install taking pics.... this will be a "dry run" sorta for when I do my install... I already know what additional cabling I will need to make all the necessary connections to replace my OE Nav in my ZHP. Once I get my CSL bootlid painted Imola Red, then I will be ready to do my install which is planned for sometime in the upcoming March timeframe...a DIY for OE Navigation equipped cars will be made then unless a detailed one has already been made by then....

well, mine is pretty lousy in spots. missing, even, in spots (lots of rock dings). clearcoat missing in spots on the roof rails. spiderwebbing on the lower right part of the bumper...

i might get the entire front end resprayed.

Well.....the car gods weren't smiling on BP tonight as BP realized he forgot one important part for his Eonon retrofit.

A slight delay of about 4 hrs so BP can get required part and resume the next part of his weekend car plans....

The detailing of his car was a lot of work and you can clearly see improvement of how his car looks after I worked on it.

Well....on to the next day....and some pain killers for my aching back....

Yeah, I knew when I layed down it was gonna be a good night's sleep. I was woken up this morning to BPs text telling me he was at my door. I slept real hard...long time since I slept so well :)

Anyway, I have BPs car back in my garage with Tony helping with BPs Eonon retrofit...

Hard part was routing the camera cable thru the rubber grommet that attaches to yhe trunk...what a PITA that was!

Yep! That was silicone goup Tony put in there to help lube the camera cable as we threaded it thru that very tight space...

BP's Eonon stereo is complete. Got everything routed, connected and installed. Everything seems in order and the stereo output sounds amazing! So much more functionality compared to my OE Nav setup.

I'll be upgrading my ZHP soon :thumbsup
