2 - Pardon my colossal ignorance, but besides being the name of your car what exactly is a "wobbie?" Its killing me not knowing.

Charlie, that is not the intent of my plate. I don't know what that crap is on that site. I've never heard this term used anywhere before.

I saw it somewhere one day and liked it so I chose it. Later I remembered where I got it from; it was on another car in another state, but at that point it was too late to change it so it stuck. End of story.

Derek,
When I rebuilt the calipers, I used stainless steel pistons engineered by Chad, along with seals from racingbrake.com.

Chad made SS pistons? Hopefully this can be the solution to my worries of the cracking piston caps.

This is definitely the solution. These pistons also resist heat much better; we tested this theory with both pistons on a frying pan. The stainless one was MUCH cooler. I get no brake fade on track even on a hot day.

Over the past weekend, lights all around Wobz got frozen.
Pics below.

Light output is the same brightness, only it's more diffused. The inspiration for this was the Volvo S80, with its frosted-looking LED running/brake lights (don't remember which set of lights). It's a soft glow now compared to a sharp indication that LEDs typically provide. I get the glow of a halogen bulb with the sharp reaction of an LED. :thumbsup

Note: brake, turn signal, and reverse lights are all LED, front and back. Only running lights use the halogen bulb, which is why they look the way they do in a couple of the images below.

Well, today I peeled all the PlastiDip off. Its novelty has worn off. What made me take it off was the fact that the car just didn't look quite as clean right after a car wash. There's something about a candy gloss about the car after a wash, and the lights diminished that effect. I loved the lighting, but that wasn't enough to justify keeping it on there.

To make up for the failed mod attempted, I had made a "promise to purchase" for a sweet M3 oval auto-dimming mirror. I found glare from people's headlights bothering me a lot more after my lasik surgery but never got around to getting an autodim mirror, so today I finally got one installed. I was allowed to rock it until payment. :thumbup

Charlie did the wiring (super easy with the existing wiring there) and mounted it for me. It is definitely one of the biggest aesthetic mods for my interior, and it actually serves an awesome function as well, easing the pain of glare on my eyes. I highly recommend this mirror!

That isn't the highbeam bulb that's illuminated. I installed city lights, which get installed into that empty hole in your highbeam bowl. See where the light is coming from? It's not the same thing as what you're referring to.

Ah, I understand now. Mine aren't even high beams. They literally don't come on unless I pull the lever towards me. It's like they are menat to flash them, but never to stay on. Maybe this is normal and I am just a noob... sorry if that is the case. Either way, I really like the look of the running lights in yellow.

Some people have that bulb configured as Daytime Running Lights, where it's pretty much the bulb at half brightness, on with the ignition. It's a simple matter of coding. Yours happens to be coded off.

My setup is a retrofit solution. I didn't do it the OEM way, which is hooking it up to two pins on the LCM and recoding it as a euro LCM. Instead, I hooked it into my angel eye harness so it functions the same way.

I believe in non-xenons, the center one also is a highbeam as well as flash to pass.

BP, there is some drilling involved to get it the city lights to work yes? Did you wire the city lights to the LCM like a euro one?

Is there a way to program them to only come on when you turn it to the first position (when the corners turn on)? I don't know that I want them on full time, but would I think they would look great with the corners and such... like you have in your pictures.

Sorry to hijack the thread...

jgt_zhp

I got a similar result by replacing the "flash to pass" high beam lamps with some Nokya yellow lamps, and programming them as the daytime running lights using PA Soft

If you set them as Daytime Running Lights, they will be always on when the engine is on and the low beams are not present. Just like how my signature picture is.

There is no drilling required to install city lights, Derek. You just buy the bulb, the socket, and the wires for them, and either hook them up to your angel eye harness if you have one or you hook them up to the LCM and code the LCM for euro spec, then it'll work with the light switch. I wanted mine as daytime running, so I used the angel eye harness method (my harness was hooked up to ignition so I kept it).

These lights are much dimmer and more subtle, since they are only 5W bulbs. Compare:

City lights (this is an E36 but it looks the same on E46):

Daytime Running Lights:

http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/1438/suc50505.jpg

Daytime Running Lights (DRL) are just the flash-to-pass/halogen high beam lights at 50% brightness.

The programming part is not straightforward, and you need the software and hardware to be able to do it. The dealer cannot program your LCM for euro spec.
The wiring is easy, but if you're not going to code it then there's no point.

You're better off buying an angel eye harness and wiring these bulbs up to that instead of going all the way up to the LCM.
There are plenty of DIYs out there that tell you how to hook up an angel eye harness. I bought my harness from Khoalty.com.

Other than that, you'll need the Part # for the bulb, the socket, and the "bushing contacts" (the wires). I'm feeling lazy and tired at the moment... I'll dig up part numbers a little later.

I was thinking of wiring it up to the rear parking lights wire in the LCM so I don't have to activate it to LKM. I wanted the city lights to go on with parking lights and delete my corner lamps power :)

Today, I had M3 motor mounts and transmission mounts installed. I had bought these over poly mounts because I have read some reviews stating that the vibrations were very obvious when the car was revving at low RPM after installation.

Having these mounts installed I can say the car has a cooler personality now with the way it drives. :)

I really do think it would be worth hooking it up to your LCM, if you want it to function that way. That's how it would function when coded.

Yes; the city lights require two wires going from their connectors to run up to the LCM. An angel eye harness isn't required for this. AE harnesses don't connect to the LCM at all.

Did you compare the Gruppe M to the AFE?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2

I did.
Volume-wise, they both seem almost the same. I can't tell which is louder because even though we have the same exhaust, they still sound ever so slightly different, even before the intakes. There are differences between our cars that you can tell, both in driveability and sound, so it's really tough to call which is louder.

The type of sound is very easily differentiated, however. The aFe gives it a more course "power" sound, sort of like how the S54 sounds pulling through third gear versus how the M54 sounds. The GruppeM makes it sound smoother. The actual tone seems the same to me, but the "smooth" sound more resembles a supercar that doesn't sound course. It's hard to explain...

Do you find the same?

Thanks Randeaux. You know, these brakes would look su-wheet on your black vert. Just sayin'...

Volume-wise I felt the AFE was slightly quieter due to the enclosed design. The GruppeM seems to emit a much throatier growl that seems more like a ITB engine.

Awesome work BP and Charlie.

May I suggest adding the AFE scoops?

I was never sure how much they did then I took my filter out to clean it and I saw a good size spot of dirt where the scoops dump into the box.

In fact it was the only spot of dirt.

Clearly they flow some serious air.

I have them, Jon has them and Dane has them.

They sit behind the kidneys and send air up into the intake.

I don't think they change the sound but they def improve airflow. Especially on the highway.

Do we really need this much airflow on a stock engine?

I'm curious cause $150 seems like alot if there aren't much gains from additional airflow.

The e46 M3 Scoops is the model that fits our cars. I think these may work better if you are at higher speeds.

To address the pimpled face, I have placed an order for Dr. Colorchip. We'll see how this works out. If it's as easy as the videos lead on, then the front end and various random places should be sorted out in about... an hour-ish. I plan to get this done before I detail the car for the winter.

It works. It takes a long time to get enough material in the chips to make them even, but they look 90% better after the first pass. For road rash just slop it on and then even it out with your thumb then remove excess with the solution.

Do you know what the cure time is? I'd preferably like to seal it right after I've completed the "repairs", but I know paint needs curing time. I've been told that cars that have had a fresh respray need at least 30 days to cure before you can even wax them. Do you know if that's the case with this kit? If not, I'll call them during the week and find out.

No. The process has you smear it through and over the chip, then immediately remove excess with special solution. This only leaves paint in the chip and it's flat not bulbous. Deeper chips take a couple of runs.

It's a pretty ideal process and solution.

Only downside I found out was if you get a respray you have to tell shop you've used it or it does weird things to the new paint.

Use what you're comfortable with, but Dr. Colorchip gets rid of every negative aspect of working with regular touchup paint because it IS a bottle of regular touchup paint alongside a solution that makes each application perfect.

Now, if your style is to wet-sand your chips, blob the paint in, wet sand it again to be even, then go through a full polishing process for each chip, then more powah to you brother!

Rockchip FREE?!?!?! I'm jealous. My car has less than 10k miles and a clearbra and it still has chips. I saw some spots on Raj's AW that had been Dr. Colorchipped, but I had to get like 6 inches away from them to notice, so I concluded that it works extremely well on AW.

The thing is, there isn't a method more effective than dab and smear, IMO. Paint pens and regular touchup paint with nothing else leave fills that aren't as even as they should be, unless you follow the steps that you'd use with the Dr. Colorchip method. At that point, you might as well have gone with the Dr. method!

Received my Dr. Colorchip kit today, so I gave it a whirl. I did a small test section just above the driver's side headlight going about 3 inches upwards, as well as a small section just above the driver's side grille going up about the same 3 inches. I have to say, the chips aren't quite as filled as I'd like, but at least they're a darker shade of red instead of WHITE, so you can't really tell they're there from more than 3 feet away. I will have to go over them again to fill them out more.

At first, I nearly shipped my pants because after wiping the area with the Sealact solution, there were massive globs of paint smear all over where I had smeared the paint, so I thought the Sealact wasn't doing it's job. I was about to flip my lid... so then I didn't have anything to lose and poured more sealact on the cloth, going to town on it with some harder rubbing. It all came off, thankfully. I do feel the instructions should say "rub with medium pressure" otherwise this stuff won't come off (it currently says rub lightly).

I will be doing a writeup of it in the near future. Here's a couple of pics for now:

Here's the passenger side for comparison. The driver's side (the side I tested on) was just as peppered. Every square inch of the front of the hood is covered in chips of varying sizes, so you can imagine the drastic changes.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7350/9990510523_319678a0d4_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/65070296@N06/9990510523/)

Here is what it looked like after my very first pass with the Sealact, the part that made my nearly go to UPS with my pants.

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3801/9990512133_11a75caf12_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/65070296@N06/9990512133/)

Then I went to town with the Sealact and harder rubbing. Here is the result.
This is the section I first tried. It's the area just above the high beam bowl and around the start of the projector for lowbeam.
Note there are chips in the section where light is reflecting off the hood; that is how the chips look really close. They're not 100% filled, so you can see a darker shade of red/black inside those chips, which is better than the greenish primer color of being down to the metal. I will be going over these again to fill them more.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5515/9990374665_a823f3bba0_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/65070296@N06/9990374665/)

This is the whole section I did. Just above the driver's side grille and just above the driver's side headlight, though not all the way to the hood edge on the side. There are still many microscopic chips I have to fill in, which is why you see tiny white specs versus the larger ones of the first comparison shot. I can easily fill those with not much effort.

These two small strips took about about an hour since it's my first time. When I resume this job either tomorrow or Monday, I predict it'll take much less time. From the time you dab and smear this stuff to being able to touch it with bare finger, it's less than 3 minutes. I'll be posting a full review once done with all of my chips.

I don't even care if it's not 100% level as long as there's more than a very thin coat on it. I don't want it to rust so I'd rather have more paint on there than less!

This past weekend, another piece of epic awesomeness has been blessed upon Wobz. This fine gem comes from Charlie with love:

The sound I got from my TSE3 and aFe intake combo at 6500-6700RPM can now be had at almost ANY RPM once WOT is applied, and I honestly can say that I still am stupidly grinning days later after my initial test drive...

And so, with the welcoming of this ridiculously awesome exhaust from a ridiculously awesome friend (and I don't say that because of the intake or other things acquired from him but instead because of the quality of person he is), my aFe intake will soon depart to its new owner for the price of shipping. While I will miss it, the GruppeM is a very worthy replacement, and have to say that I am proud to have a genuine Japanese part in my car considering one of my best friends is also Japanese, so this part holds a special place in Wobz.

I sure am looking forward to cleaning up the engine bay and making this truly shine like it deserves!

Nope. As I said, disabling this option yields a non-functional rear fog button in my car.

In case you haven't noticed, the picture sucks because I was too busy paying attention to the road versus taking a decent shot. So, considering both hands are on the wheel always unless I'm shifting, I think I deserve a break to provide a useful picture for you all on how useful rear fogs can be. :p

And I never take both off the wheel at the same time. That is purely careless!

I'm kind of waiting for the next foggy day to be able to use the fogs again. Lol

[insert performance increase here]
[/performance insertion complete]

Today I disassembled my DISA unit with the intentions of rebuilding it. Upon disassembly, I did all of the tests they asked me to perform on the German Auto Solutions website (check the vacuum pot, look for cracks, check for free movement of the flap, make sure pin isn't loose). My DISA was actually in near perfect shape. I don't know if it was replaced before I got the car, but if original, it has 173k miles on it. If it was replaced, then it has at a minimum of 100k miles on it even then. Despite being in such perfect shape, I had a NASTY 4k RPM dip. It was extremely noticeable, and felt like the car was about to lose power completely at that point. Regardless of the condition of the components, I went ahead and did the rebuild anyway.

It was a little bit difficult doing the rebuild mainly because the components were in such good shape that they were still firmly planted in their respective locations. I replaced everything the kit had a replacement for. The one thing I did not do, however, was wait 12 hours for the Loctite to cure, mainly because I was half an hour away from home and don't have a second car to use, so I had no choice.

After replacement, I noticed that the car ran as though its pants were on fire. The 4k power dip is now completely gone, instead replaced by completely smooth acceleration from low to high RPM. It feels as though it has an ever-so-slightly higher amount of torque as well in any gear and any RPM. When I run the engine hard, it sounds to me as though it packs more of a punch, even if there is no noticeable power gain. All of the benefits are in the "feel" department, possibly with a tiny microscopic amount of power actually restored. This was entirely worth the money. I do feel that it also cured my jerky acceleration between 1-2k RPM as well. I used to get jerky acceleration if I started in first gear and quickly added throttle between 1-2k. Now it just seems to be nice and smooth.

I also replaced the CCV and the four associated pipes/hoses. It's amazing just how much disgusting mustard was inside of these CCV pipes. I'm so glad to have this finally done. It wasn't as much of a pain as people make it out to be, you just have to know what you're doing. I had my friend helping me, who works at a BMW dealer as a tech, so he's done hundreds of these CCV replacements and knows his way around an E46 as well as he knows how to breathe. He told me what I can take out and what doesn't have to move, and what order to do things in for disassembly as well as reassembly. Previously, I had to add a quart of oil every 1500-2000 miles. We'll see how oil consumption changes now, as well as whether my SES light comes back on again (previously kept popping codes that suggested CCV based on the codes, he says). I have cleared the light and have driven at least 30 miles at this point with no SES light on yet. We'll see...

I have a 1.2 bar coolant cap from GAS to install as well but forgot to do it today, so I'll install that tomorrow.

Hate to burst your bubble, but it was no software update. It was just a reset of the knock adaptations. :(
That's all the bulletin calls for, unfortunately.

I'm not doing the update for the dip since it's gone with the rebuild of the DISA valve, I just want to make sure I'm running the latest.

edit:

I did notice one thing. After my DME got "updated" by BMW NA, I noticed my DISA valve does not closed on start. I compared this to one ZHP with the update as well and it reacted the same as mine. A ZHP without the update reacted with the DISA valve closed on start. I am still confused as why there is a difference. The DISA valve operates normally under testing so :confused

I honestly dont feel the dip anymore but I'm not sure if it was the DME "update" that caused it.

Once I get Progman to obtain the correct IP address for the head, I'll be checking the version of my DME. I'm wondering if perhaps there is a later version of the DME software that could potentially have a fix for this issue. I don't know why my DME would be any older than anyone else's since mine was pretty much at the end of the sedan production run, but we'll find out soon enough!

Bought four of these puppies for what is quite possibly, the LOWEST price for a genuine set of BBS CH wheels ever. $2k-ish new? Nope. $1200, the average going rate for these wheels used? Nope. Not even $800. I got these mofos for $600.

Granted, they need some TLC, which is fine, because I will be doing the work myself. I was hoping to get these refinished before I put tires on, but I fly out to CA tomorrow and won't be back until Sunday. I needs tires badly, so I'm getting the new tires mounted to these instead of the Style 71's since I plan on running these as a daily set this summer. I will just have to refinish them after the Reunion...

This is the kind of rash two of the wheels have, though the one in this pic is worse than the other one:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51080706767_849cfe9030_b.jpg

The other two wheels don't really have rash, but instead nicks that are pretty deep, so I will have to fix those as well.

The color I'm going with will try to stay close to the originals; if anything, the color will be a hypersilver type of finish if I do it correctly. Two are also missing caps, while two have black caps. I plan on borrowing a couple of caps from a very good friend until I source genuine BBS red caps.

Awfully small price to pay to be a member of the BBS club... :biggrin

Sometimes you just can't pass up an extremely good deal when you see one. It especially helped that this ad was up on VWVortex a few months ago without replies and the guy never bumped it, so it wasn't really all that publically visible. Win.

Specifically interested in the offsets.

No.

Samsung Galaxy S5...

Iono mayne. When they were sold new as a set, the front were 18x8.5 et 35 and rear were 18x10 et40.

And based on the pictures posted, fronts are 8.5 wide.

Now for wheel studs......

You already have them!

Was the owner from Virginia?

Yes. Drove all the way down to pick them up and what was supposed to be a 6 hour ride back became a 10-ish hour one due to all the Easter traffic. Unbelievable.

That's some serious Stretch on those tires. What's the offset on them?

Two of the wheels came with tires, a 225 and a 255. I wanted to test fit the 255 but couldn't, because three have the hub centering rings and the 255 tire was the one that didn't have the ring (it's missing). I have to order one from Tire Rack, but had to take a massive leap of faith and order a tire size blind not knowing if it'll rub. The wheel test fitted above is the 225 tire.

The size of these wheels is 18x8.5 et35. I currently am running my track setup daily until I buy a set of tires to go on the CH's. Those wheels are 255-40-17 all around, et40, and do not rub (fender lips are rolled). I'm hoping that the 245-35-18 tires I'm ordering will fit without rubbing, considering they're 10mm smaller than what I have now, and even with the et35 offset, I should hopefully have 5mm MORE clearance than before. I'd be quite ok with that! I just hope the math adds up on this one.

With a roll you are in the clear. 245s will be so flush!

Yes, but this is a set of (4) 18x8.5 wheels, which have an offset of 35.

Ahh. Well then I was wrong.

But I was just wondering if these were the same wheels I had my eyes on. Seller was also asking $600 for them but they were the staggered size that tirerack sells.

Another cheap set? Wow.
I wonder what kind of shape they're in... I didn't do too bad with these. They're usable as-is, as in they are all straight with no bends or cracks. Of course, I have to buy the centering ring to be able to use all four. :)

This is definitely not that set, as this was sold as a square setup.

Yeah. Hmm I might contact the guy and see if he still has them. They are very similar to condition of yours.

That is a stupidly good price... you should jump on it.

All things considered, purchase price and the cost of refinishing them myself and the red BBS caps I'll be getting, I'll have a MINT set of BBS CH's with the ultra rare red caps for less than the cost of a used set. :biggrin

Looks like I won't be rolling down to the meet with these wheels. In fact, I might not ever be rocking these wheels.

Two of them wobble side to side, they are so bent. I'm absolutely livid right now.

Sorry to hear that...but you didn't roll them when you bought them to check for bends??

No wonder they were $600...

How much to get them straightened?

Well Justin, considering the fact that I had a fully loaded car with 3 people, there was no way I was going to fit a jack in the car along with the 4 wheels I would ultimately be carrying home with. I, so no, I did not put them on the car.

Maybe I shouldn't even mention the fact that he stated in writing that the wheels had no bends on them.

They were being sold for $600 because all of them need refinishing, which is what the ad stated.

I don't know of these can be straightened. Visually they look fine; they wobble side to side. I'll have to bring it to a place tomorrow to see if they CAN be straightened...

If not, I'll have two totally useless wheels. Can't begin to describe how mad I am right now.

You don't need a jack to ROLL the wheel on sealed concrete. A change in path would show any bends in the wheel. Two of the wheels had no tires correct?

I am not getting into this with you right now. The ground wasn't even pavement, it was a dirt road that was uneven.

Ugh. That's the worst. Hope you can get it dealt with and the seller is honest enough to refund you some of the money or buy them back at his expense.

Really sorry to hear BP. I hope you can get the wheels straightened or your money back, at least. Still, doesn't cover the time and excitement that went into it to be thrown away.

I don't have high hopes. Since I sent the down payment through PayPal (and sent regular, not as a gift), I'm wondering if that's sufficient to open a "not as described" claim. I don't think that's PayPal's problem though...

The excitement is what really has me down. Ok, I lost $600... But now with the $100 in materials spent to refinish the wheel as well as whatever it costs to straighten them out, I'm not far behind a set that wouldn't have needed refinishing. One tries to score an awesome deal and instead gets shafted. I don't get it.

Regardless, I'll see what a wheel place says tomorrow. I took a video of how bad the wobble is.
