Staggered vs. Sqaure for a DD/light track purpose

First of all, I'm sorry to bring this up again. Seriously. :facepalm


I'm looking to get Style 67's for my car. My ZHP wheels aren't in the best condition, and I really don't want to get them refinished.

I found a set of Style 67's not far from me for $400. They come with three good tires; the last one has a hole in it and needs replacing. I'm not in it for the tires, though.

The set I'm looking at is staggered, while I wanted a square setup. I'm not keen on trying to find another set of rears (although I am looking), but I wanted to ask those who are knowledgeable what the pros and cons of staggered vs. squared are for my purposes, and if going square was worth it on your part.

Time is of the essence, so please let me know when you can.

I can only comment on the daily aspect. Square for a DD is good for rotating tires and getting the most out of them.

-MIGHT cost more since you will most likely buy the wider tire for all 4. (225/255 vs 255/255) but it somewhat is cancelled by being able to rotate tires.
-Harder to find a extra set of rims to match width.

Stagger:
-geared to understeer in emergency situation
-Don't need to find extra set of rears.

Honestly the style 65 aren't the rims to use for track. I would just keep them a set of staggers for now since it's rather difficult to sell the fronts off. I personally would get a 2nd set of rims :)

I'm leaning towards that... I found a set of rears but they have rusty. :(

So I've been doing some research, and it seems the rears won't fit? 18x9 et 26. Can anyone verify? I'm rolled in the rear, but it would only cost me $20 to get pulled out farther...

I totally just realized I read type 65 not type 67. It involves a good amount of work to get the rears to fit. Most people just use 4 fronts. You can sell the 4 rears to a M3 guy.

Well, after looking at the XI in those pics, apparently the rear Style 67s will fit... But, no telling how much work that guy has done. He is on coil overs, so who knows... I will say this, my rears (and fronts for that matter) are 18x8.5 ET 35... Currently I have 6mm spacing and no rub.

Going from my rims to the rear Style 67s would be like adding a 9mm spacer to what I already have... There's no way you'd clear that without some pretty good fender pull. If you can get it done for $20, I say do it. I think the next time I'm home, I'm gonna pull mine so I can slap the 10mm spacers on the back.

Also, not sure on the fronts at that point. My wheels are really wide already, again, same as my rears. Going out another 15mm would be a little too much in my opinion. I personally think 18x8.5" ET35-ET40 is PERFECT up front... Of course, if you go with an 18x8" up front, you can add 6mm of spacing.

Also, some other thoughts... The E46 M3 18" fronts are the same size and offset as our stock wheels. If you go with 4 of those square, you'll want to space the back out, otherwise it'll look funny. But, that being said, a 10mm spacer would do the trick perfectly for a great look!

I like the look of the 135 style and have been searching for two 18x8's. Somewhere in the tread it's mentioned a spacer for the rears. Is that necessary for handling or is it for looks?

That’s exactly the reason I went with four 8x18" “fronts” on my DD ZHP: extending the life of a set of tires through regular rotating. Using a spacer at the rear axle is purely for looks, but my what a look! (FYI, I ended up going with 245/35ZR18 tires on 8x18" rims, 10 mm spacers on the front, 15 mm spacers on the rear.)

I'd also be interested in swapping around. I'm in the same boat as PirateZHP, tho: new tires with only a couple thousand miles on 'em (if that). The wheels aren't in great shape, and I'm not totally in love with the 135s. I think in a perfect world I'd have a set of 18x8s that I could use for snow tires, 18x8.5 or 9 Apex wheels for summer duty and another set of 17" wheels for track duty.

A staggered setup will naturally lead to understeer, as you have more tire in the rear vs less tire in the front...combined with a stock car setup the car will push.

There are ways around this (some camber...big front bar) but depends on what you want to do.

Square will eliminate most of this (you will see some understeer I can almost guarantee) but it will not be as bad as staggered. Of course at this point you're going to run into fitment issues like you're describing
