View Full Version : Bad Cats

So it seems I may be looking at replacing my cats for the second time in six months! The original set apparently failed at 195,000 and my tech installed a used set he had around the shop and it fixed the problems I was having. Fast forward, six months and again I am experiencing the same issues--no power, crackling at 5000 rpms and low, loud growling on acceleration.
Anyone out there have similar experinces? I have heard that these are not supposed to fail and if they do its due to other causes, eg. fuel trim--at least according to Otto at BAVAuto.
Any thoughts?

Strange, I've never heard of that happening. I'd lean (no pun intended) toward the 2nd set maybe being bad too, but others might have a more educated answer.

Do you know if the car is throwing any codes?
Cat degradation should be picked up by the O2 sensors.

Are you in California? If not, get aftermarket headers. Enjoy the power gains and lower cost.

No CE light is on. Going for a scan Monday. Spoke to new indy who seems genuinely interested in helping me diganose this issue.

If your cats are bad, I have a set laying around I could sell to you.
