I'm looking for a nice helmet that is at least snell2010 approved because I'm going to start auto cross in a month or so. Do you guys use open face or closed? Please give your opinions .
I personally use an open face, I found the full face restricted my vision.

If that's all they say then they allow either Snell M2010 or Snell SA2010. Most clubs today allow helmets as far back as Snell M2005/SA2005, but next year they will ban the 2005-certified helmets and require either Snell 2010 or Snell 2015, probably starting 3 or 4 months after the Snell 2015 certified helmets become available. Snell usually issues new motorsports helmet safety standards every 5 years. M is for motorcycle and often has a larger eyeport. SA is for cars and usually has more fire resistance.
For a bargain helmet that's still certified, check our Zamp or Pyrotect.

It means that I'm interested in everyone's opinion and want to subscribe to the thread. I'm in the market for a helmet myself. There is an actual popcorn smiley on the other forums I frequent.

If you can afford it, get a SA Rated Helmet.
The big difference, is that the SA Helmet can withstand multiple impacts, and is fire resistant. The M rated helmet is a 1 impact helmet (meaning in a rollover...the following impacts will hot have any protection)

See that stormtrooper helmet in the background in derbo's picture? That's what you really want to wear--very Imperial. When you spin or take out a bunch of cones, nobody will know who you are, as long as all the other drivers are also wearing the same.

Bell is a great brand. So is Zamp. As long as the helmet is SA2010 or M2010, I don't think you can go wrong :)

I would say there are only four things that can go wrong with selecting a bargain helmet.
1) DoT certified but not Snell certified, as most clubs/orgs require Snell certification
2) Snell M2005/M2010 certified but your club requires SA2005/2010
3) Great deal on M2005/SA2005 helmet then it expires for most clubs in late 2015
4) Find out it's not comfortable for at least 10 minutes (AutoX) or 25 minutes (track)

Good pointers there. I usually try on helmets locally and see what fits my melon of a head. I bought a SA2010 since I probably wont ride a motorcycle ever.

Couple of things about helmets. Been there done that, hopefully some can learn from my mistakes.
1. Helmets are safety gear and should not be a place where price guides one's decision. They are there to keep the squishy parts where they belong.
2. Get one that fits. I did very little Auto-X but did some time in a few race cars with more time spent wearing my brain bucket. Not only is an ill-fitting hemet uncomfortable, it does have an impact (no pun intended) in the overall safety of the device. Everyones' heads are slightly different shape and your buddy's 7 3/8 (L-XL) helmet may not fit your noggin, despite wearing the same size hat. Points of pressure inside the hemet will cause headaches.
3. Weight matters.
4. SA v M? Personally, I would go with the most current SA rating available. The downside of the SA is the narrower field of view. Frankly, I didn't feel the FOV of my helmet had an adverse effect on stage or lap times; my abilities kept me off the podium, not my hemet.
5. Full face? I like the slightly extra protection the full-faced helmets provided. Granted, I started in open wheel cars before finishing in close cockpit cars and still bought a full-faced helmet. I did remove the shield on occasion, through. Dust...
6. Accessories? HANS mounting points, integrated intercom, etc...
Have fun!

I would def. go with SA over an M rated. They're generally more expensive, but some clubs require SA and it would suck to have to rent or borrow one when you could spend just a little more and get the SA in the first place. The newer the year the better as they phase them out over time. So an SA2010 helmet, while not the cheapest options will last you for many years for lots of different applications.
The primary difference in the M vs SA is the testing they go through. M is for impacting on a flat surface (think rider hitting head on concrete), while SA against a rollbar. SA also has flammability testing. All helmets are one-time use from an impact perspective, regardless of rating.
As someone else mentioned, it's your head--don't make the decision on price.
I went with the HJC Si-12. It's a composite weave and fits my head great. Super, super light which is nice for long sessions.
